Happy Birthday: The Compact Disc
It was 30 years ago today that the first CD went on sale. Much to QuikSand's chagrin it was Billy Joel's '52nd Street'. It overcame that initial road bump to go on to sell over 200 billion discs, and counting.

I believe the first CD I ever bought was either Diamond Rio or Tracy Lawrence. Last one I bought and the only one I still own is Paul Westerberg, Suicaine Gratification.

My first ever CD purchase was "Brothers in arms" from Dire Straits sometime in 1985 when it came out.

My first was Run-DMC's "Raising Hell." My brother and I couldn't BELIEVE how clear Run's beat-box sounded on "Son Of Byford." We used to listen to that short track over and over and over in the weeks after purchasing that CD.
(And then 25ish years later, DMC would learn that he was *not* born son of Byford...)

Remember how the early CDs all came in those really long boxes? Once Best Buy, etc started really getting huge into the CD selling business that they started yelling about reducing the packages for their shelves.

Didn't cassettes have those at one point too? Not boxes but I remember that white plastic and having trouble getting my MC Hammer tape out of it.

I remember back when CDs first came out it was only specialty stores that carried them, and they were $20 or $25 each. That was a lot of lawnmower money to save up to get them. I think the first CD I ever bought was U2's 'War'.

My first CD purchased was Kiss "Psycho Circus", 7th grade. Might also be the worst CD I've ever purchased.

This is actually the correct answer to most "first CD" type trivia questions -- Brothers in Arms goes down as the first major-impact, must-have, all-digital, smash hit album to really embrace and define the technology. |

Mine was Kris Kross. First ever cassette was MC Hammer. I can't stand hip hop.
