Do you have a go bag?

Curious. I'm thinking about making one in case I need to bug out to my anti-zombie compound. Or should a tornado hit. Or Obama gets reelected [according to some of my neighbors]. I think the recent hurricane highlighted again how quickly basic services can break-down.

After having a few too many drinks last night I woke up to find that my go back would consist of a half dozen different Solar USB chargers, a weather radio, and some emergency blankets.

I do think a well prepared family has some sort of 3 day bag that can get you through the worst of things until help arrives. Or can keep you alive if you need to hit the road.

I've considered it but always get too lazy or cheap when it comes down to it. Just find better ways to spend $300+. Or figure I'd be able to make do with what's inside my house. As Norv said though, whoever has a gun would get all my stuff anyway.

I do have a kit in my car though in case I get caught in a blizzard or something. This was mainly for when I was living up in Minnesota and drove on some bad roads that didn't get a lot of traffic. Has flares, matches, tin cup, blanket, and a couple MREs I believe.

The one thing I wish I had was something for long blackouts. If a blizzard hits and the power is down for a couple days, I'd like something to keep me warm and provide light. I know they make those 500 hour burning candles that I should get. Maybe even store a gallon or two of water in the closet. But I'd probably just get lazy and drive out to a family members house who has power.

Drive x hundred miles with family and animals in tow - stop at Walmart where-ever we are and stock up on anything required, find place to stay - job done and cheaper than 'emergency' supplies which you'll likely never use (and if you ever need them will probably be found to be out of date at that point).

Yes thats a fairly simplistic outlook - but I'm a fairly simple person

Nice list..living in South Florida and having to go through some hurricanes which knocked out power for 2 weeks , I do have a hurricane kit. Every year before hurricane season I stock it up.
The lesson I learned is to try to beat the masses because once a warning is issued everyone freaks and stores empty fast.

Yeah, I have one for short-term emergencies and one for a much more significant emergency.

The short-term bug out bag is a standard 72-hour kit with things like water, MREs, pet food, blankets, some changes of clothing, matches, flashlights, batteries, radio, a basic first aid kit, a basic toolkit, a kelly kettle for cooking/sterilization if necessary, small supplies of prescription meds, and copies of important papers. We've needed to make use of this kit only once, following Hurricane Ike in 2008.

The FUBAR version is one we'll probably never have reason to use, but the components are readily available if needed. It's essentially just the 72-hour bag with some additions for a long-term stay in the Texas Hill Country (hunting supplies, ammunition, and whatever medical supplies I can carry out of my clinic). This isn't so much a kit or a bag as it is a contingency plan since we basically already own these things for other reasons.

Overall, the cost isn't too bad as most of the stuff is either something we replace yearly as a part of hurricane season preparation or something that my wife or I have access to in our business.

I should note that amazon list is not me.

My wife and I have actually accumulated most of the essentials due old hobbies of climbing and backcountry skiing. Just need to organize them and add in a crank radio, knife, long lasting rations, and a few other odds and ends.

I'd love to add a rifle to the mix, but my wife is not a fan of keeping firearms in the home.

I still keep a bag in the car with waterproofed matches, candles, lights, batteries, water, high-energy food, clothes, duct tape, trash bags, pen, paper, and a space blanket, in addition to some basic first aid supplies. It sticks in my car.

I also keep my pills with me 24/7. You never know when you will end up in a situation where you can't get home. But that's more a hard lesson-learned than anything else.

Seriously, tho- my wife got all panicked when she moved to Houston about hurricanes. In a little apartment, she spent some space basically making a hurricane prep kit.

Now, I think some of that is no big deal. She made sure that stuff that was already around the apartment was in a logical place like batteries near flashlights, etc. She bought some spare cans of food (with can opener) and water but donates it at the end of the hurricane season so it's more a sacrifice to the weather gods.

But I think not having a hurricane in 2 years has backed her off of some of the more crazy stuff. No: we did not have a 10' inflatable raft but I think it was touch and go for a while there.
