First time ever I've actually resigned from a company. But, got an offer from a different place, and decided it was time to move on.

Rather liberating.

Did you write a resignation letter with subtle jabs? That's tradition in some industries.

I envy you. I always felt irrationally guilty when leaving jobs, except one time. Like pit-of-my-stomach guilty, even though I was giving proper notice and going on to better things. One time though, they were a bunch of assholes and I luckily got offered a better job like 1 day after shit went down. That was awesome.

Yeah, like I said - I've never actually resigned before. It's always been economic / merger layoffs (I drive companies into the ground!). Hard to really go through with it, and there's always a lot of nerves going into the unknown, but I really feel like it's the right move.

Resigned for another job or just getting the heck out of Dodge?

Got another job. I don't think I could ever quit a place without something ready & waiting.

Didn't figure, but seemed odd to me in this day and age, especially in IT.

I was with one large company for 5 years but changed jobs twice within it, moving halfway across the country each time). The first time was by choice and my manager helped me find something to advance my career. The second was because we lost the contract on the site I was on so I had to find something else. Most recently, I knew I had to come down here as my wife was already working down here but I spent a lot of time in Indy (over a year living apart) before not only finding the right fit in Houston but also making sure the folks in Indy wouldn't be left hanging.

Do you get the weird vibe from everyone that you're "betraying them"? I've noticed that both times I've left, to a greater or lesser degree. It really surprised me the second time since I figured people would understand the situation of a wife being in another place. But the first time, leaving for a better opportunity after being passed over for a couple in KC- I kindof expected it but was a little surprised nonetheless.

In this place, not really. Hell, everyone in the IT department is both very happy and jealous as hell....as they are all looking too.

The operations manager is the only one who I'm sure is shitting a brick, but he put on a good face, and I think he gets why I'm leaving. Long story short, the biggest reason is the fact that this place by its very nature is a 24/7 operation. We're on call every other week, so I'm having to plan everything I do with the thought of 'okay, how far from a computer am I in case something breaks?'. Quite simply, I don't wanna live like that.

There's of course several other reasons, but that's by far the biggest issue.

Been there, done that. Tho, fortunately, I was on a team of three with typically only work for 1 or 2 over the weekend so you could get away if you scheduled in advance. It was a lot of on call, tho, and I'm happy to not be on it.

Best thing about leaving a company is hearing all the people you worked with start to open up about how much they hate it there, too -- really makes you feel like you made the right choice.

Congrats. At the moment, I'm envious. I almost quit my job today, even without having another job lined up and while (obviously) needing health insurance.

I think I'll choose to live vicariously through you.

Heh. *Start* opening up? Not at this place. Morale's been pretty much in the tank for months throughout the company.

Signs I made the right choice, Volume 12:

So the other programmer in the office (yes, there's 2. Now 1), was called in, asked if he was looking for a job. Of course he is. They tried to get him to agree to a 6 month commitment...for no additional money. Oh, and of course, he'd be handling all my responsibilities and on call 24/7.

Remember this guy?

He just accepted an offer at the same place I'm going to. We're getting the band back together.

I hear the seven Catholic "sales only" employees in the office are getting together and forming a new company.

I do however, start before him. Which means I get about 2 weeks or so to "prepare" his new office.
