open source?
Just curious here...throwing it out there with low expectations, but is there a possibility that the source code for FOF could be made public???
Jim doesn't look like he's planning on another version of the game, and I doubt it hurts sales as most people probably will not even know how to compile the game. I think it could really re-energize the game and lead to fixes for all (or most of) these issues that Jim has lacked the time to get around to... |

Never gonna happen.
However, you bring up some solid points and I see no reason for Jim to not investigate an upgrade of the current product and include FOF MP tools to help us equalize gameplay and sell it as v6.5 for $9.95. Of course, I've mentioned this probably 3 times in the last 3 or 4 years so I doubt that will happen either. |

I go to work doing a job I'm not too keen on just like many of you FOF’ers probably do. I'd love to sit at home and develop a game of Football. Apart from being involved professionally in the game can you think of anything better than to be able to write a game and get paid for it while being at home? From what I understand Claystone even offered to pay the development costs for the game. (not sure if that’s a real offer or not though). There is a clear marketplace for it as well and enough football minds here to come up with 500 new ideas for the game and I expect hundreds of people who would be willing to help in whatever way is required. Yet it seems nothing new for FOF is in the pipeline. So what else is required Jim?
Jim If you’re done with FOF (and I really hope you are not)then maybe Claystone or all us FOF’ers can pay for FOF to become opensource if that is what’s required? |

The more I think about it, I wouldn't want FOF to be open source honestly. I'd prefer the randomness of drafted players to be hidden, amongst other things.

Not too sure what you expect, but it shouldn't be a huge surprise that some sort of statistical distributions are behind the draft players/game play/etc. Knowledge of them doesn't do too much as there are a variety of tools now that can essentially guesstimate what the distributions are, in conjunction with other statistical techniques.
Either way, knowing the source code doesn't do too much for you when you play the game as it's still very stochastic, if even you want to bother looking into it - you have the option to just download the opensource version and play it as you would any other version of FOF... By looking at historic draft files, you can see raw ratings of players, and they pretty much follow that mold, unless VOL strikes. I don't like the idea of this, and I wouldn't like the idea of other game aspects being the same way. The tools released to make the game easier do not by any means make drafting, ect, an exact science. Knowing exactly how a player will turn out via an open source game is an exact science. If I knew everything about the game, it would take the fun out of it for me.

I see what you are saying, but the way the game unfolds is not definitely NOT so deterministic...it is VERY stochastic...
You also assume that an open-sourcer wouldn't circumvent such "predictability" (if it exists) by incorporating more stochastic aspects into the game. I think your worry is unwarranted... |

About 3 other developers (greyhound, wolverine, ??) were trying to develop a text based sim...I followed those forums for years with nothing coming to fruition. Shame really, big market if you get the right word of mouth out.

Tim at Wolverine states they have not shelved their project but it is not a big push for them right now. Arlie at Greydog stated sometime back he is back in work on theirs and although there was no definitive date set if I remember there was something that leaned towards the end of this year. To bad you couldn't get an agreement between all the parties to collaborate on a enhanced project. No doubt a market is there.
