So it looks like I'm going to be on my third Xbox 360 soon.

The irony is not lost on me that my launch model lasted from late October 2005 until December 2011 before succumbing to the dreaded RROD, while the replacement unit, a supposedly more reliable Jasper chipset lasted just over a year before having the soundboard go bzzzzzt.

I'm afraid to ask my friend how many he's gone through. It's another reason why I skip on playing consoles.

My first Xbox 360 in April of 2006 lasted one day. #2 lasted until December 2011 as well. #3 is still going strong however. My first PS2 also lasted one day.

My first PS2 was a launch model that crapped out after a year. My second was still going strong when I moved to Wisconsin. Made a long-term loan of it to my cousin since I have a BC PS3.

Last I heard, her shitheel of a sperm donor had ruined it by leaving it on all day when he went to work instead of, y'know, using the fucking memory card.

But the two 360's and that first PS2 are the only systems that have ever died on me. Everything else I own still works just fine.

PC folks are very judgmental. You could buy 3 or 4 Xboxes and still spend less than you would on a gaming PC.

I went through 4 ps2s. First 2 were the original style and ended up with problems with the drive motor, probably because of dog hair or something. 3rd was stolen when ny house got robbed. 4th is still functional, I think.

I'm still on my first ps3 tho. About to get another one so I can have a bigger Hard drive, and I don't feel like messing around with swapping it out or whatever would need to be done.

As do my toploading NES I picked up over 10 years ago (my home one was working but I can't find it ), my SNES, and my other accumulated consoles, usually bought a few years after they came out: Genesis, Dreamcast, N64, Playstation, PS2, GameCube, and Wii.

Hell, my old grey brick still works. But I don't think anything could destroy those. Nintendo Power always had stories about soldiers taking them to Iraq, having them get blown up, dropped in the latrine, and whatnot, and still playing Tetris.

Yup. My top loading NES still works and so does my SNES. I'm not sure why those still work, but, it seems fairly common for 360s and PS3s to die. I don't think I can even remember knowing someone or reading where someones NES or SNES just died on them. Just blow some air into the cartridge slot and you're good to go.

Except that's killing the console slowly. Use a cotton swab and alcohol if you want to clean the cartridge slot without causing moisture rot.

Yes, that is the best way to do it. But when I'm trying to get my Tecmo Bowl on, there's just no time for that.

Then, eventually, comes the day when you can no longer get your Tecmo Bowl on.

Update: the Xbox 360 worked just fine via HDMI on someone else's TV, and on an HDMI port he said hadn't worked in forever, to boot.

Brought it home, hooked it up again...bzzzt. So I switched to my old component cables from the first Xbox 360, and hooked the Wii U up in the HDMI spot previously occupied by the Xbox 360.

Wii U works flawlessly, both sound and video, just as the PS3 did. Xbox 360 works just fine with component. It's HDMI that's somehow borked. That is, at this point, the only conceivable solution. It can't be the cables, because the cables work fine with both of the other systems.

The upshot is my TV only goes up to 720p anyway, so I'm not actually losing any resolution. It's just a pain in my ass.

But at least 360 #2 will live to fight at least a few more battles.

There's actually one on display at Nintendo World in NYC that was mangled after the Gulf War yet still plays Tetris. Cool stuff.
