Windows 8 Help

I just bought a new computer which is a windows 8. I unlicensed the game so I could install it on my new computer. After I installed and tried to start up I got an error saying I was missing a .dll file. Is the game not compatible with Windows 8 or am I missing some easy fix?

I did the same recently. Think you just have to right clickon the shortcut and select 'run as adminstrator' or equivalent thereof (on the iPad atm so can't check 100%)

When I try to install the game, I don't even get the option to add a shortcut so I cant right click to run as administrator. again maybe I am missing something simple

Go to desktop mode, which is basically like Windows 7. Then you can either create a shortcut by right clicking, and inavigating to the FOF exe, or you can use File Explorer to drag the exe onto the desktop to create a shortcut

Then you should be able to run as administrator

If that doesn't work, i'm going to have to take a step back, as I've exhausted my useful knowledge

Ok I was able to get the shortcut but when I clicked it and tried to run as an administrator I got a message saying the program could not open because msvcr71.dll was missing from my computer. I am not computer savvy so not sure what that file is.

I am not familiar with win8 as I am using win7 still, but the file it is referring to is a file that should come into your folder when you install the game. the path where the game is install for me is C:\Program Files\Solecismic Software.

I would look in the install path (probably the same) and look for that file. I have that file in the folder I spoke of above. Like I said it should be in there when you install the game.

if it is not in there I would remove the program and do the install of the game over again. Or ask over at solecismic about that file/problem your having.

I was able to figure it out. For some reason that file was not present when I installed the game, but fortunately I backed up all the program files as well as my football universe on a flash drive so I copied that file into the new install folder and I am able to open the game now.

The next trick I may need help on is importing my league onto the new computer so any advice there would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for all your help as I am not the smartest man in the world and I need all the help I can get

It's been awhile since I changed computers but now that I've read your post I think I recall moving that file over or something to that affect, not sure cause it's been many years ago.

As far as importing your league. I believe you are referring to the folder where the universe goes. For me the path is C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Solecismic Software\Front Office Football 2007

That is the default path when the game is installed. Couple things a bit tricky here are
1) after the C:\Users folder the next folder could be your name instead of "User" if you set it up that way.
2) the next folder after that "AppData" may be a hidden folder, it is for me.
2a) so you just open C:\Users\User (or whatever you may have named it) folder.
2b) click "tools" then "folder options"
2c) click the "view" tab
2d) look at that list and you'll see a folder named "Hidden files and folders" double click that folder
2e) then you'll see 2 choices, select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"
2f) then click "Apply" then "okay"

Now when you open that folder you'll see the AppData folder shown and you can navigate from there to the universe folder and put your league files in there if it's a single player league. If it's a multiplayer league then you put your files into the leagues folder.

hope this helps

Thanks Phinsfan. That did the trick. I do single player but have almost 200 years of play in. Would have sucked to have to start over.

On a related note, did we determine if the new FOF will run on Windows 8?

I believe your referring to the FOF to come out this fall and yes it will. this was said in the chat with Jim Gindin
"[19:49] SOLECISMIC: Q: What are the system requirements for FOF7?
[19:50] SOLECISMIC: Windows XP or later. A screen with a resolution of 1024x768 or above."

yes that would have sucked to start over. glad that worked out for you. helps me also as i will go to win 8 at some time so at least I know now that parts of it are similar.

I was wondering if you have any interest in multi player. if so you can send me a pm here and we could discuss it.
