Free Agents staying on your team

In free agency, why do we have players kept on our teams when they aren't actually on our teams anymore?

I assume it's due to how cohesion works, but can't there be a button somewhere to just renounce any cohesion "rights" or whatever it is causing them to stay on the team?

Just seems silly to sim ahead to see who my team leaders will be after the players I don't want on, & didn't re-sign to, my team are finally taken off my team

In sp I sometimes release guys I know I wont resign before the start of the next season then you dont have to worry about them being there.
