Calling plays

Does anyone play out their games and call their own plays in FOF? I've always been a guy who likes playing out games in text sims, but I gave up calling my own plays in FOF (in previous versions and the new version) because I kept getting my ass kicked!

Now I'm no Bill Walsh or Peyton Manning, but I feel like I know my football. I'm also not someone who calls 50-yard bombs on every play and blitzes the house in every passing situation. But it seems like no matter what I do while calling plays, my team just gets drilled.

Is the game not ideally set up for players to gain an advantage through strategic play calling? Or am I just not the football genius I think I am? (FWIW: I call my own plays in other football sims and generally have success.)

After I say the hell with it and switch to simming games, my team suddenly starts winning and piling up yards.

I play the hell out of FOF and really enjoy the game, so this isn't a complaint. I'm just wondering if other players who enjoy calling plays also experience similar frustrations.

I have similar problems. I think rex is simply better at not getting into predictable patterns than I am. The AI will call a lot of plays that I don't ever call because they aren't high percentage. I think those plays set up the wheelhouse plays a lot better though.

When I run something like Smashmouth and just observe the playcalling I will see early on running plays tend to be low return, but then my team will hit some big pass plays and everything opens up. Haven't been able to duplicate this running plays on my own.

I also have a similar problem learning the game, but find some succes using the player in the right situation, for example WRs with big courage catching crosses, or power backs running short down situations... But in D# I only usually take the reins in 3rd down, 1st and 2nd are for Rex
