Laptop to TV Sound Issue

Calling on the wisdom of FOFC after failing to get an answer elsewhere...

I am trying to get sound from my laptop to my Samsung tv via hdmi. It used to work, but I tried to connect it today and got nothing. I looked in the control panel under 'Sound' and 'manage audio devices' and my tv doesn't appear as a choice (I remember it appearing before). I only have my pc speakers with the sound card as a default option appearing there now. Is there something I'm missing that would allow me to have the tv reappear as an option for sound output? I'm stumped.

ive had that issue before, and somehow the order things are plugged in helps.
