Saying hello to a beloved dog

My wife is starting to want a new puppy now that it's been six months since we put Callie down. I'm not a dog person but I got to thinking that we have a thread for one end of it, we should have another thread for the other end of it. Not sure if it'll have the same effect for people but figured I would start a thread where people could post/talk about their new dog family members.

I'd like to see photos of posters' dogs regardless of whether they're new. Here's mine:

Seriously...haters.

These are our two guys, Hank (top) and Melvin. Hank's a big boy, about 15 lbs, and Melvin is our new one as of November. We got him at about 3 lbs and he's up to probably 7 or 8 now. We added him a bit after putting Hank's brother Leo to sleep (which I posted about here).

Since 2016 has been wiping out celebrities left and right, let's end on a positive note....new dog! He's a rescue, from Texas. We're told he's part Australian Cattle Dog and Lab. Weighs about 20 lbs, and almost died from Parvo virus in October. We adopted him today.

His name is Watson.

Our other dogs, also rescues, weigh 65lbs and 85 lbs respectively, so it is a bit odd to see such a small dog in the house. Kinda forgot how big the other two really are.

This is Scully.

She's my new dog. I adopted her from a local animal shelter about three weeks ago. She's a six month old shepherd mix of some kind. Animal control picked her up wandering the streets as a stray, so not much is known about her origin.

It took her a few days to adjust and to remember how to be a dog and a puppy, but she's pretty much got that down now. She can be a bit shy, but she's very sweet. She mastered house training within a week, though we still need to work on her excited eliminations whenever I come home after being gone for a bit. While flattering, I would rather it not happen.

She bonded to me really quick. She must be wherever I am at all times. She even keeps poking her head through the shower curtain when I'm in the shower. So far, she's been great with everyone she's met kids and adults.

She's been a pretty great dog so far.

It is a typical feature of the breed. They start off with very bright blue eyes and usually become golden by adulthood.

Two shots for size comparison.

Nittany is the black dog (lab/plott hound mix). Cheyenne is the brindle dog (also lab/plott hound mix...they are biological sisters), and then of course Watson is the white/tan dog (he has a very faint tan coloring on his back).

It was eight years ago today that I adopted Scully.

We've been through a lot together. When I got her, it was just the two of us, and now I'm married, have two kids, and she's a family dog.

That being said, she is still very much my dog. She still follows me around everywhere (unless someone else is eating food that she knows she gets a piece of) and picks up my routines incredibly quickly to anticipate where she needs to be to close to me. She used to go on 24 hour hunger strikes whenever I had to travel, but has finally stopped that as she's grown more comfortable and bonded with my wife and kids.

Every now and then - if I am staying up late to play video games or getting up super early to exercise - I sleep in a separate bed from my wife. Scully always joins me and is very good about staying on her side and near the foot of the bed. However, the moment she hears the alarm go off and senses I am awake, she quickly flops over so that her head is near mine so that we can spoon and I can give her all sorts of pets and belly rubs and she can give me a few kisses. It's a lovely way to start the day.

She continues to be a great dog and I feel incredibly lucky to have her.

My wife and daughter have been pushing to get another dog as they think Ollie is my dog. He was a pandemic pup and he loves us all and if my daughter ever leaves her room he'll immediately lay next to her on the couch. But I work at home so he generally only goes on any significant walks with me. He really only goes with my wife and daughter if I go with them.

I'm not overly thrilled about getting another dog since I'll be the main caretaker and our house isn't really big enough for 2 dogs. We tested on our the other week and she could literally jump over the couch and could have jumped the porch railing if she wanted to.

So I took our guy to get his nails done Sunday and while I was there some people were there with an 8 week old foster puppy. She was cute and I debated whether to tell my wife and daughter. Well I sent them a pic and it was an immediate, "why did you not buy her there." So now I'm on refresh duty for the humane society waiting for them to put her on their website.

We have 2 dogs and 2 cats. They are bankrupting me well beyond what my actual children cost - and one is still in college. Three of them are on prescription food, one has asthma and throws up every 3-4 days, and our big dog can only eat hypo-allergenic food, had that Covid-like respiratory illness for about 8 months beginning last fall for which we paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars to try to find a cure, then he blew an ACL this spring, had a negative reaction to the stuff they used to rebuild it and had to have the surgery again. Both dogs take a combined 18 or so pills every day. Kennelling them for a vacation costs nearly as much as the vacation.

I love them all but fuck me, I don't know what has happened in the 30-40 years since I was growing up and you had an animal that just ... existed. Rarely if ever went to the vet and had no problems.

Vets have become big business. They are being bought out by big corporate interests and are only interested in how much they can sell you.

We got a dog from an abusive situation 1 year ago today. He's an Australian Shepherd and was 8 months old when we got him. He was terrified of everything. And I really mean everything. He spent his first month or two barely leaving one of the beds, he would not eat or drink with anyone else in the room, he was absolutely terrified of leashes, did not let anyone pet him if you or he was standing, and if someone unfamiliar walked into the room he'd start shaking uncontrollably.

We tried a trainer/behavior specialist when we first got him but the one we had work with him a bit and said he's just not ready for anything like that yet.

One year later we've finally got him to the point where he's going on short walks on a leash. He's still terrified of the leash but he's allowing us to take him on walks with the older Australian Shepherd we have. He lets my wife pet him while standing and is able to eat or drink if I'm in the room with him.

He absolutely loves other dogs so we're hoping to get him to an enclosed dog park this summer.

We have 2 cats and were told that the cats in the home he came from bullied him so he was scared of the cats at first too. Our smaller cat has been really good with him and eventually the larger cat we have has accepted him as well. He loves these cats. He tries to play with the smaller one but doesn't know how. He doesn't understand that him hopping all over the place and tippy tapping in front of her doesn't make her want to play with him.

The amount of time an attention we've put into making him feel at home over the past year is crazy. He went from being a dog that obviously came from an awful situation to one that comes across as just a bit neurotic and afraid of people now.

The first pic should be the boy in question. His name is Rusty.

The 2nd pic is our old man. His name is Johnson and he's about 11.5 years old. Johnson is the nicest dog in the world. The only thing he wants out of life is attention, stuffed animals, and someone to throw his ball for him.

The 3rd pic is our little girl Tali. Both of our cats are around 6 years old. We got Tali as a kitten right after our previous cat passed away. She is miss independent. It's her world, everyone is just living in it.

The last pic is our big boy named Nobu. He's around 16lbs and came from a hoarding situation where he was one of 40 cats turned over to the humane society. He was the last one left and they were worried he wouldn't get adopted because he didn't like people. He was around a year and a half old when we got him and we spent $10k last year on a PU surgery that saved his life. We joke that we paid $10k for gender affirming care for him to help with his transition.

EDIT: I'll add that Johnson has an interesting story as well. He was a stud dog for a breeder. My wife wanted an Australian Shepherd when we got married. We looked around and couldn't find a breeder that we were comfortable with to get a puppy. We ended up talking to one that was selling Johnson because new Washington regulations cut the number of dogs you could have on a farm for breeding. Johnson was 3.5 at the time and had no interest in doing his part of the breeding process. They only got one litter out of him. He just wanted to play and get attention. So we went and saw him the next day and came home with him.
