Defender of the Spanish Main

So I've decided to run through SM Pirates again, this time against my normal tendencies and will just be an ally to the Spanish, no one else. We'll keep the gold flowing to Spain baby!

I came out of the starting city, Blackbeard was raiding a Spanish treasure vessel and i stopped him and took his Frigate. That shalt not raid!

Great game.

I wish Sid would invest a little and give us a refreshed version.

I was talking to my son about PC gaming in the 1990s and told him how Microprose Pirates!Gold was my all-time favorite retired game. Like a lot of things in my life, I don't think I would ever again capture the joy I had playing that game. Too bad SM Pirates was a completely un-re-playable game in my mind (and imo) and had some unfortunate game elements (just like he did with his RRT remake). Also too bad Sid has gone off the deep end, away from the classic game designs that made him famous. I think the popularity of Cities Skylines could give credence to bringing back old-school strategy games.

SM Pirates was one of the first computer games my son played. I remember him looking over my shoulder as I was playing. Eventually he started playing it himself and he would come to me to do the dancing and/or finish the one-to-one duels if he was losing.

Eventually, he finished the game multiple times and moved on to FPS, Dragons Age, Skyrim etc.

We still have the original disk somewhere but was thinking about buying the Steam version.

I played the original Pirates (I think on the C-64) and enjoyed the remake also. It had a ton of re-playability sailing and being a pirate but wish there was more variation and randomness in the quests.

Me too, surprisingly, even giving up Civilization et al. The only games I have played the last 3 years have been Skyrim and Assassin's Creed (and Cities Skylines recently). Still can't figure out why except perhaps to blame Steve Jobs.

So many gold SM games from back in the day.

Bit of a thread jack.. anyone ever play Dark Sun: Shattered Lands? Definitely one of my all-time favorites.
