FO07 noob question: How to simulate pre-season match?

Just went through hours of signing free-agents and setting depth-charts, but can't figure out how to sim pre-season wk 1. When I try, I get the message that I can only have 46 active players during the season.

A) It's pre-season, not the season.
B) I can't find any way to de-activate players.

Just right click your player on your roster screen to deactivate them, or hit the inactive button on their player card. You have to have at most 46 active at all times, regardless of pre or reg season.
