need help with learning game

I am new to the game but have already played it a lot. My question is this. I have put together what I think is a very good defense with a good defensive coach. My problem is that when I play a game and the scouts say I should dominate a team my defense gets torched through the air. My run defense is solid but I can't stop anyone's passing attack even the teams with bad qb's. What am I doing wrong? HELP!

Welcome to the game, and to the boards here.

That's a pretty open-ended question. There's a lot of information here worth sifting through that might prove useful. But I don't think there's anything as simple as "you need to do this exact thing to be successful against the pass." Which is probably for the best - the game wouldn't be very immersive if it were that easy to just crack it.

A few thoughts:

-There's a lot to learn in the Defensive Philosophy document about things that might not be intuitive - ideal weights, skill sets for various techniques, etc.

-Lots of DBs have varying skills in different types of coverage. Peruse the detail about the types of defensive schemes, and try to align them as much as you can with the personnel you have on hand.

-The game is notorious for being harsh on gameplans/approaches that vary dramatically away from reasonable balance... so if your gameplan calls the exact same defense 80% of the time, your opponent will start to get an edge against that setup (again, probably as it should be)

-If you have been really active with your roster, you may be suffering from a cohesion deficit (lots of new starters or young players without much position experience), and there's no response to that other than to sit back and chill - it's a pretty meaningful effect, especially in the extreme (like having mostly new starters)

I'm pretty new also. Make sure you are looking at the endurance for your players and checking the Defensive Personnel chart. If you have low endurance on your key players such as corners the game will generally have them in on normal situations and take them out when you need them. Play around with balancing the depth with your key players on the field when you need them.

Example would be a good corner who is on 1st and 2nd but then gets sat on 3rd and 6 when the offense lines up 1/0/4. It was things like this that eluded me in the beginning.
