View Full Version : The Great Debate... PS2 or XBox??

Well, what are your thoughts? I own a PS2 and it's great, but I've heard some great things about the XBox and am wondering if I'm missing out.

I'm pretty much into sports games, period.... although I do own GTA Vice City, which is a pleasant diversion.

It seems to me that it's just like Sega v SNES and PS1 v N64, one has excellent sports titles, (Sega, PS1) the other doesn't. Am I wrong? Or am I so right that it completely blows your mind?

I actually find the XBox to be better for sports games. They have all of the same good titles as the PS2 and all of the exclusive sports games on either system arent very good. The best thing that the Xbox has going for it in this department is the hard drive. Not having to deal with the memory cards is a gift and the graphics/gameplay are slightly(but not extremally) better.

I think X-box has better "sim" potential for sports games. Theoretically, the HD could hold far more years of data than the PS2 memory cards, so EA could make their Franchise far more years on the Box than the PS2.

That being said, I want to have Vice City, but I think Halo cancels out my urge.

I have an X-Box (and just got a Game Cube at no cost yesterday :D ) and I think it's great for sports games. Has much better controller, harddrive is a huge plus, and Halo is oustanding. Also Vice City is out for PC now and I've heard it will be out for X-Box soon.

PS2 has the over all better quality of games, X-box has quanity but not many must have titles... but for sports only, If I already owned a PS2 I wouldn't buy an X-box too just to play the same ported titles and vice versa.

Vice City and all/any other GTA titles are sony console systems (like if there was ever a ps3) exclusive untill atleast 2005. They are allowed to make ports for the PC because playstation isn't directly competing with computer games.

Overall, the PS2 is a better system. The XBox is a better piece of hardware. But the PS2 has many more games. Just think in terms of the formula: 50% of games are crap; 25% are barely playable, 15% of games are good, and the remaining ten percent are made up of the very good, outstanding, and all-time classics.

All that being said, though, if all you play is sports games and shooters, then Xbox is probably just as good an invest ment. The real problem with XBox is that it is unpopular in Japan. Since Japan is where all of the good Rpgs, most of the good adventure games, and nearly all of the good strategy games/sims come from, you'll be missing out a lot of the hot imports that these Japanese companies aren't going to port to an XBox version.

If you are into online gaming, XBox is not even an option. EA Sports is making online capability of their games available only on PS2

I don't know about Vice City, but I would put money on, at the very least, GTA III being on the Xbox by the end of the fiscal year. For what that's worth.

I used to have a small tabletop Pac-Man game, with built in joystick and 3 in. computer screen. That shit kicked ass. Can't wait for the Ms. Pac-Man ROM.

Right, because we all know that EA is the only company making sports games.

Yes, I agree that Madden and EA's NCAA football game are currently the best football games on the market, but the same is not true for EA's efforts in the other sports.

MVB Baseball is a better game than Triple Play was, but I still prefer World Series Baseball from Sega.

NBA Live is the 3rd best NBA game behind Sega's 2K series and Inside Drive.

Sega's hockey game beats EA's, and the Microsoft game is promising as well.

Unless you decide you have to use exclusively EA sports games, you actually do have options - XSN Sports for the Microsoft games (Fever, Inside Drive, Rivals, Top Spin and Amped) and Sega's sports games.

dawgfan,

Holy shit, really? I could have sworn that EA was only compnay making sports games. (end sarcasm)

Unless I have missed some big announcement (which is possible), SEGA is making their PS2 games online capable as well.

Xbox is better. The rest of this year should be a pretty big year for Xbox....

Plus the Hard Drive is awesome.

Well, it's got better hardware. Of course it should considering it came out a year and a half later. But it's all about the games. The PS2 has a bunch of games. The Xbox doesn't. Right now, I've got a PS2. I'd pick up a 'Cube before I got an Xbox the way things stand.

I think the PS2 is the better option. I love EA sports football games, and all other sports are of secondary importance. And I think Live will suit my tastes better than 2k4 this year. They've had a year to polish the vastly improved Live game from last year.

Honestly, I get tempted by the X-box, but then I look at the games for X-box that I can't get on my PS2, and it's only Halo. Some day, I will get the box, but for now I'm gonna keep waiting.

Plus the dual shock is the best controller in the history of man. :)

Since I'm exclusively a sports game player, I really enjoy the Xbox. Graphically, the Xbox puts out prettier games. While that, of course, doesn't make a difference if the game is crap, the games are essentially the same on all systems, just the Xbox can look a tad bit better. That's not the gamebreaker for me, though. The HD makes the Xbox go over the others. It really makes the games a lot cheaper. Because, if you want NCAA 2003, you have to pay the extra, what? $15 for the memory card just to save a season. I don't know too many people who just like to play exhibition games over and over and over and over again. But with the Xbox, you just have to pay for the game, and not only can you save one franchise, but you can have multiple running at once, so if you want to start a new one, but save the old one for later, you can without spending more money to save.

This does cut out the portability of seasons, but really, if you think about it, when you play other people on other machines, you are playing exhibition games against eachother, so saving a season only really matters for solo play. That is why the Xbox is the superior sports gaming machine.

Its been 180 since E3. Gamecube is 150. PS2 is 180.

Don't forget, if you want to play EA Sports Online, its like another 10 bucks a month. So lets say you buy the 5 major sports games (NCAA, Madden, Live, MVP, and NHL) at $50 each, and online is $10 a month. After one year, you've spent an extra $24 per game or a total of $370 for 5 games. And I doubt people will own each game, so chances are they'll pay an extra $60 a game (if they only own 2, i.e. Madden & NCAA)

I really could care less about online play, so my X-Box is here to stay.

I do own a PS2 and I dont own an X-BOX, however I will say that PS2 falls behind in some levels like technical reliability (PS2 Fans "DISC READ ERROR") however, PS2 does have the games like Final Fantasy and Grand Theft Auto. I will say though, I have tried X-BOX, and the framerates put the PS2's to shame because I've tried NASCAR Thunder on both systems, and X-BOX seems to play it a lot faster without the rather mediocre FPS of the Playstation 2.

My point was that your statement that if someone was interested in online sports gaming you have only option was false, unless that person only played EA Sports games.

Oh how I love these posts. In fact, ask this question over at operation sports!

There is no one gaming console grand champion, it's all about what you like.

I would take both, if I had the cash, but since I had some ps1 games, love the ps2 controller, wanted a dvd player, and play mostly EA sports games, the ps2 was for me. The Xbox would look better on a HDTV, but I don't have one of those puppies yet. I hear all the time about memory cards, but they don't bother me one bit, I've had two cards for quite some time and still have plenty of room on both of them.

Both systems have advantages-disadvantages, look at the game libraries and decide for yourself. Actually, you already have a ps2, so if you have the cash, get an Xbox. They have the addition of the Microsoft sports games as well as Sega and EA.

What about the XBox controller... I'm not sure if I like the idea of that massive thing.... I like my PS2 controller. Do they make smaller controllers for the XBox?

sooner333
06-09-2003, 09:43 AM
Yeah, they have the "S" Controller for the Xbox. Its smaller, and I think you may be able to get a system with it nowadays. I have one of each, and I generally use the S controller, although I don't mind the big bulky thing, because I went from a N64, to a Dreamcast, to a Xbox, all of which had "bulky" controllers compared to its counterparts.

Please produce a credible link that says EA online will be pay for play on the PS2. Or stop passing off blatantly false statements as fact. Your choice.

Yeah, I remember reading somewhere that EA said that rumor was false and that it would remain the same for online games.

Bear in mind that the only console I own is an NES, and I haven't seriously looked at PS2, X-Box or GameCube before because I knew my wife would kill me if I bought one.

However, this statement caught my attention, as I do have a Sony WEGA with the 1080i circuitry. I'm assuming X-box must support HDTV resolution (1920x1080) if you said that. Do the others not support it? Do they all have component video outputs? More importantly, are there actually any games that utilize that high of a resolution?

Good questions, I know both consoles can use component cables, which I have for my ps2... BUT the xbox also has one step better:

The Xbox High Definition AV Pack connects the console to most TVs with interlaced component video inputs including high definition ready TVs that support 480i and either 480p, 720p or 1080i component video signals. Look for HDTV support on Xbox game packages. Movie playback is in 480i only.

This pack also supports digital or surround sound audio receivers. Sound system with Dolby Digital decoding and a fiber optic cable required to enable Dolby Digital sound. Sound system with Dolby Pro Logic decoding required to enable Dolby Surround sound. (Additional cables and sound systems sold separately.) High definition ready television required to enable high definition features.

My step dad has a ps2 as well and a widescreen 65" HDTV. I would really like to know how the xbox looks hooked up to his TV and a game played that supports HD signals. I'm pretty sure most games now support that feature, but a Xbox guru could tell you more.

I agree, Xbox shouldn't be A choice.. it should be your only choice.
Online capability.. the comparison between Xbox and PS2 is is joke.

For anyone who has played both SOCOM and Ghost Recon.. you'll easily agree that Ghost Recon blows SOCOM away in online play.
You need to load up a dozen cheats just to keep from being insta-death in SOCOM, lag is obscene, and playing it in first person mode is a near impossibility.

Madden is easily the most popular Football game out there, but many are starting to disagree that it is the best.
I prefer NFL 2k3 to Madden 2003, even without the online play.

Even though I can't figure out why any serious gamer would choose the PS2 version of Everquest over the PC version, It does have an edge over the current selection of MMPORPGs for Xbox.

Big difference here? Microsoft promised 100 online titles by this time next year. And given their ability to deliver.. that easily means we'll see at least 60..
PS2? SOCOM 2? and what else?

Bigger, stronger, faster.. love thy Xbox.

For Kodos:

No online charge for PS2
Posted by AndyP on Tuesday, June 3 2003

Madden Producer Jeremy Strauser confirmed today that there will be no charge for playing Madden 2004 online via the PS2.

"Just wanted to let you know we aren't charging a subscription fee for PS2 online play this year."

Good news, and confirmation we have been waiting for.
