OAKDALE: Police seek 'Spandex Man' in incident
BY AMY BECKER
Pioneer Press
Police are hoping to arrest someone they call the Spandex Man in connection with his alleged criminal sexual conduct.
Michael Scott Long, 34, is accused of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in a felony complaint warrant issued last week by the Washington County attorney's office. He allegedly entered the Hawaiian Tan store in Oakdale on March 23, wearing gray Spandex pants and a light-colored T-shirt. The complaint said he fondled himself and rubbed his groin against an employee. Employees notified police and later identified Long, address unknown, from a photo lineup, the complaint said.
Long has also been linked to two other incidents in Oakdale — at Body Rhythms Therapeutic Day Spa and Salon and Cedric's Landing apartment complex — that resulted in lesser charges, said Capt. Bill Hutton of Oakdale police. Long has been linked to nine incidents throughout the metro area, including in Apple Valley, Brooklyn Center, Eden Prairie, Golden Valley, Plymouth and St. Louis Park, Hutton said.
The approach is consistent, Hutton added. A man wearing Spandex pants goes to businesses with a lot of women employees — hair salons, tanning salons, massage businesses and even a Mervyn's store. He asks women to rate him and fondles himself.
Marie Forsell, Hawaiian Tan owner, said she has started closing her store earlier on Friday nights.
"If he is doing this in our salon, he has done it in other salons," she said, and urged any other victims to report the incidents to police.
"This guy came in indecently (and scantily) clad. He was wearing Spandex," said Linda Ruberto, Body Rhythms owner. He made lewd comments to her employees on April 2 and they notified police.
"The young woman who dealt with him was very upset," Ruberto said. "It sounds like something small, but a boundary crosser keeps on crossing other boundaries."
