Funny, I was just about to put up the same thing...

I'm also putting up predictions shortly. I'd be interested to hear others predictions as well...

World Cup Group Play – Round 1 Predictions

Group 1

The Swedes are the obvious favorites in this group, and should have no difficulty advancing to the second round of group play with a perfect nine points. But the question remains, who will claim the #2 spot? I don’t see Mexico hanging with the other big boys in this group, which leaves either Germany or Spain to advance. A tough one to pick, for sure. I’ll go with the Germans, by a nose.

Group 2

I hereby dub Group 2 as “The Group of Death.” Nowhere else in the World Cup will you find four more evenly-matches teams. Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, and Denmark are all good clubs, and finding an obvious winner is difficult. That being said, one has to bear in mind that the Dutch are hosting this year’s Cup, and therefore have to be considered to have a psychological edge. I’ll pick them to come out of the group as #1. As far as #2 goes, I’ll let my personal biases hold sway, and pick our northern brethren, Canada, to advance. Whoever takes the #2 spot, I predict that it will come down to goal differential, or perhaps even goals scored.

Group 3

Personally, I think the #1 spot is an easy one to pick here. Romania did very well in their qualifier against a tough Hungarian team, and should come out of Group 3 as the winner. The #2 spot, on the other hand, is a hard one to pick, as Oceania and Poland appear to be very evenly matched. Once again, I will let my personal biases decide this one for me. Poland advances to the second round of group play (I’m ¼ Polish :D ).

Group 4

The easiest group to predict, in my opinion. The Scots have done very well for themselves to get this far, but neither they nor the Italians can hang with England or the United States. I have the utmost faith in coach slashers, and therefore pick the Americans to take #1 in the group, followed closely by the English for the #2 spot.

There you have it. My predictions for the first round of group play. Now its your turn. Call me a fool, call me an idiot, and let’s here your predictions as well. Just don’t call me Shirley. :)

World Cup

Play-Off 1 - Group 1

Sweden, Mexico, Germany, Spain

Sweden takes 9 points and advances as an easy # 1, with Germany getting the # 2 spot pretty easily.

Norge, Netherlands, Canada, Denmark

I think Norway will finish 1st on goal differential over the hosting Netherlands. Sorry FM, but Canada will bow out here.

Polska, Suomi, Oceania, România

I'm going to go with Oceania here. Their nat coach made a lot of good points in the thread about cheats/cowards/stupid tactics. Maybe that's just a bias I have, but I expect Poland to come in 2nd sending the Finns and Romanians home.

USA, Italia, Scotland, England

The Americans need to come in first here or I think they'll bow out in the next group. I'll go with Italy as # 2 simply because I can't imagine 3 of my final 8 coming through qualifying.

Group 1

Obvious the Swedes will win the group, but I'm gonna predict that they'll lose a game before this group play is over.

2nd place I'm gonna go with Espana to beat Germany in their head to head to take 2nd place.

Group 2

Toughest group to predict. Netherlands take home first place on a golden goal in OT against Canada. Canada will sweep their other two games to move on.

Group 3

To the surprise (?!) of some Poland will take home first place. Romania will come close but will lose to eventual second place team Oceania.

Group 4

USA is my pick for first and England will come in second after surviving a scare against Scotland.

Guys, I can't predict anything since I have absolutely no idea who sits where in international soccer in HT. Wait, that's not true, I know the Swedes are pretty darn good :)

I agree with DK, when I saw that group I went like "OUCH"! Even though I don't know much about them, I know the Nederlands is the second biggest HT country and home of the cup. I also know that Danmark and Norge are two big markets where I go every once in a while, so things will be quite toough for my guys!

Anyway, I'll cheer them on, as I will cheer on Team USA and also Mexico, Deutschland, and Espana (who are all in Sweden's group :) )

Group 2 is insanely tough. Wow, lots of good national teams stacked in one group. I know some of the coaches of those teams in group 2 are cursing their badluck. But, whoever comes out of that division will be a force to reckoned with.
