I'm considering looking for a defender who has both solid defending and solid playmaking. I'm hoping it will help bolster my midfield a little more but is that flawed? Does anyone play an offensive middle defender? Does it add to midfield? attack? Nothing at all?

Why in gods name would you need Midfield help :)
You train midfielders and already have a good midfield.
Its not a bad idea for a team that runs a 4-4-2 or a 5-4-1 because they might need a midfield boost.
Playing your central defender offensive in a 3-5-2 is gonna weaken your central defense. And when you get you Divison IV next season your gonna be up against Excellent and Formidable strikers, your gonna need all the central defense you can get :)

Look at my friendly games... then look at my dynasty for his stats.

Hm... you have Danhoff there and combines with a *** extra, a **~ or *** and a ** at offensive for a passable. He probably gives you a full level there, it seems. Then again, you paid a lot for him- that's the kind of cash I can't find anywhere. I knew I had read someone was playing an offensive defender somewhere and it must have been your thread, lytic. I don't have an original bone in my body but I'm good at seeing what works for others ;)

In the run and shoot, there are no such thing as defenders. We have "not so close to the fronters". Both of my "central defenders" are good at scoring, one passable, the other solid. Both are solid defenders as well.
I sometimes play them offensive, depending on how desperate I am. Read, I'm playing them offensive for the match against the Superstars.
I'm also shooting a 253 at them. :)

I prefer to call them 'score less than other-ers'. :)

Ardent, I'm sure you were throwing the scoring level in there just for effect. You know, I'm sure, that offensive defenders only rely on defending, playmaking & some stamina. I just thought I'd clarify for somebody who didn't know. Scoring has absolutely nothing to do with any defenders, no matter how you play them.

I paid a premium price for him, you can find someone like him for less. When I just need a guy, I don't mind paying a little bit extra for him... He was also 19 which makes him worth more. If you get an older guy I'm sure you could get one for half the amount.
with a 5-4-1, you *NEED* an offensive defender.
