First person mode article from IGN. (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/427/427461p1.html)

Could be interesting, could be just a gimmick.

I don't know how well you can capture the "first person" POV with only visual. Great QBs can "sense the rush" in a way that would be hard to capture with a "threat meter."

Still, innovation is better than stagnation. I hope they either do well or learn a lot by failing.

Hmmmm... looks kind of neat in that video! Can't wait to hear some 'hands on' from a person who has played a game in this mode.

I wonder if it's harder to find your receivers with short QBs like Flutie... or midget QBs.

Gonna take a lot more to make Madden not be my first purchase.

I would hope you could turn your head with the right anolog stick or something like that?

Interesting. I bet that it would be really hard to get used too...

incidentally, the threat meter does really help when standing outside a strip club.

I played a first person football game long, long ago on the C-64. Anyone remember Gamestar's football game? Wasn't too bad, but at times was very frustrating. There was an arrow guide at the bottom of the screen that told you which way to point the joystick, but if you didn't do things exactly on cue, you were liable to miss the pass or get crunched before you could get into the hole. Also had no defense control. Most disappointing aspect was all those teams and no league play.

K taht was ummm fucked up to say the least. Click to download the movie, and I get this movie of a girl dancing in front of her computer screen? I think I'm uhhh gonna try that again.

Illinifan: I never tried the movie. Just read the article. Sounds like MizzouRah had it work for him.

Man, I was just gonna mention that, I didn't think anybody else would remember :D I sucked at that game, I don't think I ever scored more than one touchdown...ever. Course, I was probably about 7 at the time, too.

And about Sega's game:

"If gameplay is starting to move too fast for you, Sega also incorporates "Bullet Time" slow motion effects that you can utilize to sneak through the defense while things aren't moving quite so quick."

That just ruined it for me there. Incidentally I thought the C64 game, at the time, was a steaming piece of poo, and have never been high on the idea of first-person in sports games, so it would need to be done VERY well for me to even take notice.

I remember when Madden 64 had this feature... it was almost impossible....

I may have figured out your problem, Illini. I think if you aren't an IGN Insider, it won't let you see the movie.

Unnecessary Roughness anyone?

Even though that feature caused the game to crash, staring at the Windows desktop was more fun than playing with the 'Helmet Mode' on.

I remember that...for a post you would have to hit like up 8 times, and left once (controlling the WR)...same kinda stuff for the RB's...

For me it would be less. . . they had it nearly right last year. I don't want to see them screw this one up by adding a feature that isn't right.

If it's right, it could be fun. I pray they don't screw up the rest of the game. IMO, it had Madden beat hands down last year.

I'm not an IGN insider and it worked for me. You do see a chick dancing first (promo), but then the short movie plays.

Another funny tidbit about the Gamestar game was that even after you scored a touchdown, defenders would still come on to the screen and leap at you. Hell, it was what, 1985 or something like that? I guess programming hadn't advanced to the fine art of simply stopping the players leaping at you when the play was over.

(Actually, come to think of it, the only way defenders could tackle was to leap at you. You weren't likely to be hauled down by a lineman since they were usually blocked, but you seemed to need to elude like seven or eight different guys jumping from all points to get a touchdown sometimes.)
