View Full Version : Monster Rancher 3, my attempt to become a Master Breeder
Monster Rancher 3
From long ago, Tochikans and monsters have lived together in this land.
The secrets of reviving monsters by removing the seal of the Saucer Stones was passed down through each generation.
As time passed, people from all over the world heard of Tochikans legacy and began moving here.
The Tochikans gave everyone a monster, and, with the monsters’ help, they developed a highly advanced society.
In time, people created the Tochikan Festa, to express their gratitude to the monsters.
As part of this festival, a Monster Battle tournament takes place in which monsters compete with each other.
The Breeder who has trained the strongest monster is honored with fame and glory.
I am one of those who aspire to win the Festa and become the greatest Breeder of them all.
I have arrived at the Tochikan Shrine with all my hopes and fears trapped within my heart.
I am about to open the door to realizing my dreams of becoming a Monster Breeder.
(I am in the Tochikan Shrine, where I am speaking to what appears to be a priest within the Shrine.)
“Okay, who’s next? Okay, write your name here.”
I write down, “Ardent”.
“Ardent, a breeder, huh? I’m sorry, I can’t revive monsters right now. My schedule is full. Try again later.
Frustrated, I leave, wondering what kind of Tochikan priest wouldn’t help me revive a monster. Seems like a relatively easy thing to do to me.
Standing outside the Shrine, which is floating above the ocean, I see a small ladder leading up to the Shrine. I’m greeted by a blue haired girl.
“Hey, hey. I’m Fleria. It looks like you wanted to be a breeder, but couldn’t revive a monster.”
“You’re right.”
Fleria squints her eyes, “So, I have an idea. Why don’t we both go back and ask him again? He’ll do it if you’re with me.”
”Why would he do that?”
“Why? Because I’m a Tochikan. The reviver is also a Tochikan…It’s a good plan, but when we got to see Grandpa Bragma (so the old man has a name, huh?) you have to say that you’re my apprentice. Do you have a problem with that? Actually, they won’t listen to us unless you say you’re with me. Well, let’s go and get a monster!!”
My mind is reeling. Evidently, I have no choice in the matter. I either trust Fleria, or I likely will only become a Monster Rancher by playing Monster Rancher 2.
Back inside the Shrine, where Fleria and I meet up with Grandpa Bragma once again.
“Hmm, you again?” asks Bragma, “ I told you, I can’t revive any monsters right now.”
“Aw, don’t be so hard-headed Grandpa Bragma.”
“Fleria, what are you doing here?”
“Why am I here? Because Ardent is my apprentice.”
“Apprentice? You’re kidding. You’re just saying that, aren’t you?”
“No way, huh, Ardent?”
I look at them both, I don’t know what to say.
Fleria continues, “ So, Grandpa Bragma, just cheat a little and revive one for us. It’s easy for you to do, isn’t it?”
“No, no. I can’t change the reservation order.”
“What? What happened to my power of authority as a Master?”
”I don’t care.”
“Grandpa Bragma, I’m gonna tell everybody about the letters you wrote to that woman a long time ago…”
“W…wait a minute! I guess I have no choice. Ardent…I’ll revive a monster, but I’ll have to tell people it was because Fleria asked me to. The owner of the monster will actually be Fleria.”
“That’s fine,” says a happy Fleria, “hurry up, Grandpa Bragma.”
“…Alright, let me prepare for the revival.”
I get cold feet. Who am I dealing with, anyway? Fleria wants me to be her assistant, her apprentice, and is willing to lie and blackmail to do it. Bragma apparently has things in his past. I tell Bragma we’ll come back later.
Fleria is livid. “Oh, you wanna stop?” Fleria shouts, “No way! We already cut in line, so let’s hurry and revive the monster.”
Bragma grins. “Which method do you want to revive a monster with?”
I tell him I’ll use a Saucer Stone. I decide to use the Memento DVD.
So begins my career...

I gotta say, I love this game! Was absolutely hooked on MR2, used every CD in my house!
How is 3 in relation? Never was able to find it in Edmonton for sale...
It's fun. It's a bit different than the others. Honestly, there's a lot of story line in the beginning, to this point, I still don't have my monster, but it'll come.
From the manual:
Long ago, before the official declaration of Monster Battles as a competitive sport…
There lived a group of people referred to as the Tochikans. They had always lived in harmony with monsters. Yet none, but the leader of the Tochikans, had the power to generate monsters from Saucer Stones. As more people began migrating to the land, monsters were given to them to help with labor and ease the everyday hardships of their lives.
Over time, monster battles began taking place at various festivals and town get-togethers. This quickly became a popular activity, and eventually large-scale battles were held. People started to hire full-time “breeders” in order to remain competitive in the fast-paced world of monster battles.
Breeders learned how to raise monsters by exploring the forests, deserts and snowfields of their land. Eventually, they came up with their own unique training regimen.
The Tochikans supported the battles, because it resulted in better care and raising of the monsters. The people of Tochika traveled the world, assisting the breeders who sought their help.
Fleria is a Tochikan and a rookie advisor. She may be a little new at this, but she possesses a wealth of knowledge concerning monsters. As a Tochikan, she will travel with you, assisting in your effort to raise the most powerful and capable monsters.
The Tochikan Shrine is the holy place of Tochika. This place has been used to regenerate monsters for as long as we can remember, ever sing God gave monsters to the Tochikan people. The shrine is now under the rule of Bragma, the leader of the Tochikans.
“Thanks for waiting,” Bragma says, “Behold! The birth of a monster!”
The sky turns dark, and rain pours down instantly. A light I can only describe as brilliant fires down from the sky and into a statue of a monster at the Shrine. Instantly, the rain stops, and the sky clears up.
A monster appears before me. It appears to be a yellow and white cat. It appears to holding a microphone, and can walk on its hind legs.
“What a cute monster!” declares Bragma.
Here’s what the Monster Encyclopedia has to say:
Species: Konta
Konta thinks it can do anything with just a piece of a leaf. It often tries to use the leaf as money and gets in trouble for it.
Parameters:
Life: 108. This is a measurement of my monster’s health. When this value reaches 0 in battle, I will lose the battle.
Power: 122. This is my monster’s strength. As this number increases, my monster will inflict more damage with its attacks. Likewise, the damage my opponent can inflict will decrease.
Intelligence: 135. This is my monster’s intelligence. As this number increases, skills such as ESP will cause more damage to the opposing monster. At the same time, my opponent will inflict less damage with similar attacks.
Speed: 137. This is my monster’s ability to evade attacks. As this number increases, there is a greater probability that my monster’s attacks will connect as well.
Defense: 75. This is my monster’s defensive strength, which determines the amount of damage my monster will sustain when it is attacked.
Characteristics: This Konta is energetic, and resists cold.
Attacks: This Konta knows the Head and Scratch attacks.
Fleria: “We have to give this kid a name!”
I think about it for a minute. I want to name it “The Afoci ”, but decide to name it “Memento”, after the DVD. Maybe I’ll name the next monster “The Afoci”.
Fleria confirms the name, and then we head back outside of the Shrine, where I first met Fleria.
Fleria: “Memento. This is your first monster, right?”
Bragma suddenly appears. “Ardent, you must train to win the Tochikan Festa so that you can enter higher ranked tournaments. The top rank is “S”. If you can get there, you have done very well. Good luck.”
Fleria: “Grandpa Bragma, Ardent is my apprentice. It won’t take long to get there.” She turns to me and says, “Let me tell you something. While Memento is technically mine, I told you that we would train this monster after it was revived. So, we’ll both work to train Memento, okay?
“Sure thing,” I reply.
Fleria: “After all, I AM a Tochikan child. I know about raising monsters, and I have many connections. I can give you advice on training. You’ll find no greater Master for a newbie like you! Let’s get going!
Okay! Now that we have a monster, we have to…”
Bragma interrupts: “Find a place to train the monster.”
Fleria blushes: “Yeah, that’s it. Huh? Grandpa Bragma?”
Bragma continues: “I was listening in. I knew you forced Ardent to be your apprentice.”
Fleria grins: “Well, well. That’s just a small detail. Ardent, let’s train the monster at Morx first. It’s an easy place to live, and I know the area well.”
Bragma rubs his chin: “That’s a good idea. I’ll talk to Morx and get permission to train there.”
Fleria responds: “Thanks, Grandpa Bragma.”
Bragma: “Ardent, Fleria seems to like you a lot. I know she can be annoying, but she can be helpful, too. Please get along with her.”
Fleria: “That’s great, Grandpa Bragma. Ardent, let’s hurry and move!”
Morx is in the top left of the map of Tochika. It’s also the only place, other than the Shrine, that I can go. There are four other training areas, but they are unavailable for now: the mountains, the ocean, the desert, and the jungle. Morx appears to be a forest area.
I decide right now that I’ll train a monster in only one location during its lifespan.
“Morx” Forest
Morx is a forest area in the northwestern portion of the continent. Rookie breeders tend to start here, since it’s well suited for the raising of monsters. The area is blessed with gifts from the forests, such as nuts and mushrooms.
-- Flash to the Morx Forest --
Fleria: “Well, we’re here. This land is a giant forest. This is the spot I chose. We can train taking full advantage of Morx’s characteristics. It’s spacious, and feels good. It’s perfect, isn’t it? Memento will be able to grow well. I’m awesome, aren’t I?
I agree with Fleria, so I don’t upset her.
Fleria: “See? Leave it up to me. This is the only place you can train at this time, but you will be allowed to train in other places if you keep winning tournaments in different regions…until then, this is our home. Let’s become the best Breeders there are.”
A little later…
“Umm, are you new here?” says a weird looking young guy with a huge red hat and a backpack on his back.
Fleria: “Yes, we are. Can I help you?”
The young guy responds: “I’m Mucchi. I sell items here. I just wanted to drop in and say Hi.”
Fleria: “Oh, really? Then you’re going to give us a good deal, today, right?”
Mucchi: “Umm, yeah, right, I wasn’t planning on…”
Fleria: “Oh, I see. Don’t bother coming around here anymore, then. We’ll just have to buy stuff from other people.”
Mucchi begins to cry: “What?? Oh man…okay, okay. I’ll give you this, so please…”
Fleria: “That’s more like it, right, Ardent?”
I stare in wonder and amazement. How does she always get her way? Mucchi has given us Moak Soup.
Mucchi: “Sob, sob…that’s mean…please be nice…” and he runs off.
Fleria: “Woo hoo! It looks like we’ll get bonuses in the future. We’re lucky!”
I don’t know about the bonuses. If she treats everyone like this, I doubt we have many friends.
Later that same day…
“Hey, Fleria!!” shouts a mad looking red head with blue eyes.
Fleria: “Oh, Gadamon!”
Gadamon: “I heard that you’re finally training a monster.”
Fleria: “That’s right. I’m going to train a strong monster with Ardent!”
Gadamon: “Ha, ha, ha. Dummy. A team with a newbie and a little girl like you is no match for the Tochikan Ace, Gadamon! My powers are…”
Fleria whispers to me as Gadamon keeps talking: “Ardent…that’s Gadamon. She’s a Tochikan, just like me. She became a breeder a little bit before me, but she’s not that strong…I think.”
Gadamon: “…then I won at the tournament, and…”
Fleria: “Gadamon, you’re bugging us. Go away…”
Gadamon: “Listen to me, you punks!!!”
Fleria: “We want to hurry and start training!”
Gadamon: “Hmph! Let me show you what battles are all about!”
Fleria: “Huh? What?!”
Thanks, Fleria, looks like you’ve ticked off the wrong person now. We end up battling Gadamon’s monster, Gazack.
Comparison:
Memento Vs. Gazack
Life: 108 to 109, Gazack.
Power: 122 to 150, Gazack.
Intelligence: 135 to 90, Memento.
Speed: 137 to 161, Gazack.
Defense: 75 to 80, Gazack.
Chances are Gazack will win, especially since I can’t control Memento’s actions.
The Result: Gazack wins as time expires. I’m just glad that Memento didn’t get knocked the heck out.
Gadamon: “Ha, ha, ha! This is true skill! I am the Tochikan Ace. Ha, ha, ha…”
Gadamon laughs as she leaves.
Fleria: “…it’s not our fault, Ardent. We haven’t had the chance to do any training yet. Darn that Gadamon! She makes me so mad! I’m gonna tell Grandpa Bragma about it later!”
I think it is her fault. She needs to shut her stinking mouth sometimes.
Bragma stops by for a visit about an hour later.
Bragma: “How’s it going, Fleria? How is it here?”
Fleria: “Couldn’t be better! I did well choosing this place, right, Ardent? But, anyway, do you know what Gadamon did?”
Bragma: “Oh, she came by, huh? She came to me and asked where you were.”
Fleria: “Grrr, that girl…she started a battle with us! And she talks too much.”
Bragma: “Now, now. You girls are the only young Breeders…well, you’re just a trainee, but…”
Fleria: “Mmmmmnnngg! Grandpa Bragma!”
Bragma continues: “Anyways, you girls are the only young Breeders around, so be nice to each other.”
Fleria: “No way! She’s the one who started it!”
Bragma takes me aside for a second, as Fleria cools off: “Whew, Ardent…as you can see, Gadamon and Fleria are rivals from long ago. They might cause trouble for you, but be patient, okay?”
Fleria, calmed down now, joins us. Bragma says: “Oh well. I brought you a gift today.”
Fleria is so happy: “Wow, it’s a mask! It’s a fun accessory that let’s you change styles, no?”
Bragma: “Well, give it a try. You can always take it off again.”
The mask looks gay. It reminds me of The Afoci's mascot in Hattrick...oh the days of Hattrick. I hate the off season.
Bragma says his good-byes…and departs.
Here’s a look at the options I have.
Raise. This allows me to train my monster in a number of different ways. Here’s what I have right now.
Trampoline, which increases life.
Picking, which increases power.
Block, which increases intelligence.
3-step jump, which increases speed.
Nut catch, which increases defense.
I plan on working Memento’s intelligence and speed. I’m not concerned or have much hope with trying to increase the lower skills.
Rest. Occasionally, my monster is going to need a whole week of rest.
Battle. Here I can access the list of battles and ranks. “E” rank, which I am in, is the lowest, and goes through D, C, B, A, and finally “S”. There are also “free battles”, open to any monster.
The earliest battle for us will be 7 weeks away (the third week of May). That is the Fresh Leaf Cup.
Weeks are run like this: There are four weeks in every month, 12 months in the year.
Items. I have the ability to use, check, sell, and buy items. I’m going to stay away from using the items. In previous Monster Rancher games, items were mostly detrimental to the life span of a monster.
I’ll be doing a 6 month check up on my monster.
Memento’s parameters (life and etc) have not changed.
Memento’s character: Energetic.
Memento’s bonding: Low.
Our policy with Memento: Normal.
Memento’s attacks:
Head: Level 1, Guts 18 (successful hit may make the opponent dizzy), beat attack, 24 damage, 6 guts down, 4 critical, 34 hit.
Scratch: Level 1, Guts 15, cut attack, 17 damage, 2 guts down, 11 critical, and 42 hit.
What does this mean?
Level 1, the level of attack.
Guts, the amount of guts it take the monster to try and attack. Guts replenishes during the battle.
Damage, the amount of damage the attack will deal normally.
Guts down, the amount of guts a successful attack will remove from my opponent.
Crtical, the chance that my monster may induce a critical hit.
Hit, the chance that my monster will successfully hit my opponent.
Other things:
Memento resists cold. Memento is perfectly fine, even in cold weather.
Figure: Normal.
Likes: Monster Nip
Dislikes: Moak Soup Figures, since that was our gift from Mucchi.
Record 0-0 (we don’t count the beating we took from Gadamon)
Prize $: none
Fame: Tyro (novice or beginner, I didn’t know that, had to look it up)
In addition to my check up on the monster, I’ll be checking on myself as well.
Ardent
Ranking: Just started
$: 5000g
W-L: 0-0
Fame:
Mountains—none
Ocean—none
Desert—none
Jungle—none
Forest—Tyro
Finally, time to start.
April, 1000 (the year is 1000, which baffles me)
1st week: Current health: Healthy. Training blocking. Result: Failure. I tell Memento, “No big deal”.
From here on out, after the week, the first thing mentioned will be the current health status, then what I am doing with the monster (training, battling, or resting), then the result.
2nd week: Healthy. 3-step Jump. Failure. This time I say, “Try harder”.
3rd week: A little tired. Rest. Any time my monster is a little tired; I’ll let it rest.
4th week: Full of energy. Block. Result: Success. +5 to INT. I won't be updating the actual ratings of the monster until the 6 month evaluation.
May, 1000.
I’m reminded I have to feed my monster. Once a month, at the beginning of the month, I have to choose to a food to give the monster. There are two factors in choosing the food. One is how the monster favors it, the other is the nutritional value of the food. I will document this with a value of 1 through 4. 1 is the lowest, 4 is the highest. I will also write this according to how they favor it, then the nutritional value. For example, this month, I chose the Hagsan Peach. The ratings are (2, 4), with 2 being the monster’s choice and 4 being the nutritional value.
The Hagsan Pech is a fruit that grows in high plains. Very juicy and tasty.
I will most likely choose nutrition over what the monster favors every time. If I can do both, I will. Food costs money, but honestly, it's negligible. I'm not going to skimp. I'm not going to bother writing how much it costs me.
On that note, I should probably tally my cash as I spend it, but I refuse. If I wanted an accountant, I would hire The Afoci". As it now stands, he's currently my pool boy.
Back to May, 1000.
1st week: healthy. 3-step jump. Success, +5 to Speed.
2nd week: healthy. Block. Fails. I tell Memento that this is “terrible…”. I threaten it with peanut butter, but to it doesn't appear to help.
3rd week: a little tired, but it’s time for the Fresh Leaf Cup. I have to see how Memento stacks up! Forget the rest!
4th Week: Pretty tired. I tell it to rest.
Fresh Leaf Cup
Region: Morx Forest.
Format: League. (Round robin, in other words.)
Entries: 4.
Prize: 1000g
The other monsters:
Shisul (0W-0L I plan to keep running records of each monster, career record and personal bouts with my monsters as well) 160L, 42P, 151I, 81S, 72D. We match up favorably against Shisul.
Wakaba (0-0) 154L, 127P, 134I, 103S, 115D. Wakaba is favored to win this one.
Spinacchio (0-0) 96L, 122P, 106I, 153S, 101D. It’s about even between these two.
Results:
1st opponent: Spinacchio. It’s a KO victory for Memento!
Shisul defeats Wakaba.
Shisul defeats Spinacchio.
2nd opponent: Wakaba. Memento wins as time expires!
Wakaba defeats Spinacchio.
3rd opponent: Shisul. Both Memento and Shisul are undefeated. The winner takes the Fresh Leaf Cup. Winner: Memento as time expires!
Results:
Memento: 3-0
Shisul: 2-1
Wakaba: 1-2
Spinacchio: 0-3
Besides the 1000g, Memento improves random skills by a few points. I tell Memento, “Beautiful!” But it doesn’t seem to care. Snob.
June, 1000.
The light of earth rises,
When it’s time for seasons to change
The light that gives unconditionally.
The light that brings the awakening.
Fleria: “This is an old Tochikan saying. Basically, what it’s saying is…when the seasons change, the earth’s power grows, and many things occur. I’m going to tell you what it’s all about. When the season changes, Breeders go “venture” to places with their monsters. That’s because monsters can learn different skills in different places.”
Mucchi arrives on the scene: “Hi, there! It is once again time to go “venture”! Would you like some “Ran Ran” (the manual says this is an orchid, but I fear it's really The Afoci's special drug) Ardent?”
Fleria: “Ah, Mucchi! Great timing! Ardent, you need Ran Ran when you go venture. Do you know why?
Mucchi: “That’s because Ran Rans grow on “power of the Earth” and thus, can detect the “light of the Earth”. Therefore, if you have a Ran Ran, it will tell you about nearby suspicious areas that may be concealing things.”
Fleria: “Yeah, that’s basically it. Of course, it’s better if you experience the effect for yourself (isn’t that always the case with Ran Ran?). So, why don’t you try buying a Ran Ran?
Mucchi: Yes, yes. I have all kinds of Ran Rans for you. The expensive ones will last longer, you see?”
I buy a Ran Ran Extract. It costs 2000, and is the most expensive. I’m hoping that this will pay for itself with the things I find.
Searching the Morx Forest with my Ran Ran, I find:
1. An evil leech. Unfortunately, this stresses our Memento.
100g!
2. Succulent fruit, Life +2.
3. Memento was inspired by the light from behind a tree and came up with a new training method, “Light Learn”.
4. Succulent fruit, Life +5.
5. Succulent fruit, Power +2.
6. Noisy hall! This allows my monster to increase the level of the attack it currently has. I decide to train the “Head” attack for Memento. It increases +36.
7. Another Noisy hall! I train the “Head” attack again. It increases +34.
Unfortunately, my Ran Ran runs out. I think with all the things I accomplished, my 2000g was well spent.
Now, back to the month of June, 1000.
Our next available battle is the Tochikan Fest at the end of this month. I don’t feel Memento is ready to advance. I will try and advance Memento once he becomes a year old.
Food: Macky Fish (4, 4). I can’t go wrong.
“Fish available in the Goat region. A little fishy, but tastes good.”
1st week: very healthy. 3-step jump. Success. +6 SPD.
2nd week: a little tired. Rest.
3rd week: full of energy. Block. Success. +5 INT.
4th week: healthy. 3-step jump. Success. +5 SPD.
July, 1000. Next available battle: August, week 3.
Food: Vine grass (1, 4). Memento is going to have to suck it up.
“A medical plant that tastes bad, but good for the body.”
Now, you guys are nearly caught up...coming soon, FOFC's Billy Madison stops by to play.

A Master-whatter? ;)
Just kidding...I really enjoyed 1 and 2. Looking forward to this dynasty.

MR was THE reason I bought a PS.
July, 1000. Next available battle: August, week 3.
Food: Vine grass (1, 4). Memento is going to have to suck it up. “A medical plant that tastes bad, but good for the body.”
1st week: looks healthy. Block. +7.
2nd week: little tired and stressed out. First time I’ve seen this. Being stressed out hurts your monster’s life span, at least that’s what I heard with the first two MRs. I let Memento rest.
3rd week: very healthy. 3-step jump. Fail. I tell Memento to “keep at it!”
4th week: healthy. Block. +7.
August, 1000. Battle in week 3.
Food: Stem Mushroom (2, 4). “Mushroom that contains some stimulants.”
1st week: looks healthy. 3-step jump. Fail. I refuse to speak to Memento.
2nd week: little tired and stressed out. Rest.
3rd week: very healthy. Block. +7.
4th week: healthy. 3-step jump. +7.
What happened?? There was supposed to be a BATTLE in week 3!! I checked the schedule when week 3 came around, and it turned out I was wrong. I was supposed to have a battle in week 2, not week 3.
What should I do? I have obviously messed up. I’ve ruined Memento forever. He could have had two or three more victories. I could be 1000g richer! Shoot.
Enter Billy Madison.
BM: “You know, the best thing you can do is start over. You know, hit that reset button, start the dynasty report over. You owe it to yourself, to your monsters, to do the very best, and you’ve obviously screwed it up since you missed that battle.”
My pool boy, The Afoci, argues with BM: What are you, stupid? So Ardent messed up. Hey, we all make errors. He’s just got to work through it. He’s got to persevere. So what if Memento misses a battle? All Ardent has to do from now on is double check to make sure he’s not missing a battle. Besides, who resets a game when things don’t go the way they want it to?
Billy Madison shrugs his shoulders: “Isn’t this about winning?? Why do you play a game? Because you want to win. Memento missed a battle, therefore he can’t be as successful as he would normally be. Therefore, Ardent should restart. Ha, I’m still undefeated.
Exit Billy Madison.
The Afoci and I laugh at the thought of resetting the Monster Rancher 3 dynasty because I missed a battle. We also laugh at the thought of a undefeated Billy Madison. Clearly, this is the person you hear at work who went 162-0 in his baseball season, 16-0 for 10 years straight in Madden, and won 5 national championships in NCAA football before calling it quits. He’s undefeated, because of that blasted reset button. That and the rookie level setting. Too bad there’s no rookie level setting in Hattrick. Perhaps BM would be undefeated there as well.
Ever named an action or something about a person you know? For example, when I played “Magic: The Gathering”, I knew a kid named Craig, who just couldn’t shuffle his cards. Instead, he would start dealing cards into about 9 to 10 piles, then pick them back up. Effectively, shuffling his cards. Since he was the only person I knew who did this routinely, I started calling it “Craiging” the cards. Well, the name has stuck, and I’ve even heard that term when I was last home in February, around people I had never met before.
Another example: We joke on the ship about people’s bellies being a “Madura”. Madura is the last name of my best friend on the ship, but he’s a rather large man. We even have “mini-Maduras” and “mega-Maduras”. We’ll say stuff like, “I’m working on my Madura qual” while we rub our belly.
I think I’ll start calling the reset function on a game the Billy Madison, or BM.
September, 1000. – It’s Ran Ran time again, The Afoci’s favorite part of season changes. I don’t talk much about the finances, but it warrants it now. I have just 3,620g. Still, I buy the 2,000g Ran Ran extract. I’m hoping for great results, otherwise, I may have toBM it. LOL, like I’d ever really do that.
Results:
1. Succulent fruit (SF) Life +4.
2. Aurora Bit. Evidently pretty darn cool. Apparently, Bits are used to learn new skills.
3. Found a huge “Lord” monster, who helps monsters learn new skills, by using the mentioned Bits. Unfortunately, Memento can’t learn a new skill with the Aurora Bit. Dang it. Maybe I should BM it.
4. Ran Ran Leaf! This extends my “Ran Ran” time. Clearly, The Afoci is happy with this!
5. SF. Intelligence +1.
6. SF. Life +5.
7. Saucer stone piece. I’ll have to sell this to stay afloat, but it’s usually used to help create a monster.
8. Noisy Hall! +30 to the Head attack!
9. SF. Speed +1.
10. Sweet Chestnut. Memento feels refreshed. Awesome.
11. Noisy Hall! +36 to the head attack!
Food: Macky Fish (4, 4). Just to answer someone’s question: The reason I don’t continually feed my monster the same food over is because MR changes the value of the food. For example, last month, Macky Fish was (4, 2). Clearly not the best nutritional food out there. MR has definitely changed the way we feed our monsters from the previous versions!
1st week: Healthy. Shoot! I need to BM it! I forgot about Light Learn! Light Learn. This, when successful, adds a lot to INT, some to SPD, and drops some POW. Memento successfully completes Light Learn on his first try, for +8 INT, +4 SPD, -2 POW.
2nd week: a little tired. Rest.
3rd week: full of energy. Light Learn. Failed. “No big deal”.
4th week: looks healthy. Light Learn. Failed. Stinking monster! “Try harder!”
October, 1000. We have a match in week 3!

Ran Ran time!! Sorry, The Afoci, but we have just 1,310g, so I have to buy the Ran Ran Fruit for 1,000g. If you won’t more Ran Ran, perhaps you should try feeding Memento some of that magic kool-aid or some of that peanut butter.
Events during Ran Ran time:
1. Succulent Fruit (SF), Life +4.
2. SF, Power +2.
3. 10g!
4. Found an Aromascargo. This thing looks like a snail. Memento now has “Dry Skin”. Apparently, this is bad.

1st battle: Memento vs. Talto. Winner: Memento takes Talto easily!
2nd battle: Tekilas vs. Gazack. Winner: Gazack pummels Tekilas.
Final Battle: Memento vs. Gazack. This is the first time since we ran into that evil Gadamon and Gazack since we first met. Gazack has shown improvements in life, power, and most notably, speed.
None of this matters, as Memento wins!!! Eat your heart out!
Gadamon is freaked: “I can’t believe I lost! Heh!”
Billy Madison consoles his girlfriend: “You’re lucky I can’t reset this, We’re still undefeated, because we’re better then you.”
When we get back, I tell Memento, that he performed “as expected”.

Awesome dynasty so far, Ardent!
I never did pick up 3, but now I am considering it. I just found out that Monster Rancher 4 is coming out in October. In your opinion, should I grab 3, or wait until 4 is out?
Hmm, I don't know. I'd personally buy and keep each version of MR. I love the game.
Still, I haven't heard about MR4, but I know I'll buy it.
I don't have anything new written yet, but tomorrow my time, whenever that is for the rest of you, I should be able to post some new stuff.
My take so far is that I hate training anything but power. I'm a "let's club em" type trainer. More power, Tim Allen style.
The frustrating thing thus far? Memento's head attack and scrape attack I have figured out are the physical attacks (yellow on the screen). The intelligence attacks, Memento's forte, are no where to be found (they're green). It looks like the only way I'm going to train him for intelligence attacks is by meeting those Lord monsters, and it's not happening in Morx forest.
