Some of you may remember the scare my pregnant wife and I got a few weeks ago when her doctor couldn't hear the baby's heartbeat. We freaked out and had an ultrasound the next day that revealed that everything was fine, even though the fetus seemed a little smaller than what was expected.

Quick update: a week ago, my wife went for some prenatal tests, since she will be 35 when the baby is expected. These tests are sort of a screening test to try and detect the level of risk for the most common birth defect: trisomy 21, trisomy 18, those sort of things. It's done before the amniocentesis and consist of a blood sample analysis and an ultrasound.

Well, results just got back and everything is perfect! This is great news and means to us that we won't go ahead with the amniocentesis, which quite frankly was scaring me a little.

The fetus's "age" has also been dated to the exact number of weeks she had first calculated. This means, that contrary to what was first thought, the fetus is developping normally. Great news indeed!

That is good news indeed!

Just curious, is the gestation cycle for frogs similar to that of us humans? Or will you have tadpoles swimming around in like 2 months or something? ;)

God bless the little tadpole!

If it's a boy, you should name him Tad.

I don’t know why, but I read this as “paternal tests.” That probably wouldn’t have been a good thing :) Congratulations, though! I hope the rest of the pregnancy goes well!

You lucked out. I presume they did the triple screen. My wife did it and they said it was just a routine way to rule things out, not to worry. It comes back positive for all kinds of crap. So she spends several nights awake until we can get an appointment with a counselor, who spends half the appointment discussing the virtues of abortion (that went over really well).

Finally my wife says I want the amnio, I want it now. So she does and everything is just fine. My wife does some after the fact research and finds out this triple screen as a crock. Only 5% chance it will accrurately detect Down's Syndrome and the only thing it reliably can find is Spina Bifada, which is genetic and you'd know if you were at risk. In the end, they got us all worked up about what they swore was a "routine" test that turned out to be a total crock. Plus that great counselor who wanted to tell us it's OK to abort your baby if everything's not alright.

In the end the boy was born perfectly fine.

Good to hear, Froggy. I was reading as I burp my 3 week old. He holds on to gas like it is something special.

thanks for all the good words guys. FOFC really is a great community.

Some replies all in one place...

mrsimperless: based on our first FrogKid, I'd say they are pretty much human but they tend to jump a little more than usual :)

Buzzbee: not sure about Tad, I'm guessing the FrogWife would probably find it a tad unusual ;)

lurker: I agree, "prenatal tests" is much, much better than "paternal tests" :D

Leonidas: wow, that's a tough story. We were quite confident about what the test were gonna reveal. I had never about them being any kind of crock... Sad you had to go through all of this, happy that the kiddo is alright though! :)

GrantDawg: good to hear the baby is doing fine. :) Had one of my friend coworker who got a baby boy about the same time as you and he also got a jaundice (as I think yours had) but they've been in and out of the hospital since then. Poor little thing has some problems regenerating his red blood cells and had to go through a transfusion once or twice already... :( Anyway, all of his problems made me think about you a few times in the last two weeks. Good luck!

Wow! That is so sad. We were blessed not to have any more problems (other than the aggrevating gas problem). The doctor, when giving the orginal diagnosis, told us back in the day it was common to recieve transfusions for jaundice, but they hardly ever do it now. Must be really bad if they are going through it. Was it early, or do you know?

From what I gathered, it almost took a full week before he got realeased from the hospital because of the jaundice and the fact he was weak. Then, he seemed to get better after a transfusion at thre weeks old and just today we heard he was back at the hospital.

Now that I think of it, he's a bit older than your son, as he was born on June 6, so he's about 6 weeks old. Still, it's very sad to see a little thing, defenseless, get sick like that. The dad is all freaked out (who wouldn't be?). He's usually a funny kind of guy but these days, you can see he's anxious and not in as a playful mode as usual...
