View Full Version : Should I set my wingers to offensive?

Right now I'm pulling an exc/form./form. on defense with my wingers on normal. Do the wingers contribute to defense if they are set to normal?

If not, should set them to offensive. My offense is pulling inad. on both wings, and they are both decent passers and scorers. would I benefit from playing them offensive?

And if so, should I compensate by playing my wingbacks defensive?

Mac, I have found that playing my wingers on offensive and wingbacks on defensive is when I get the best results. This is even more true because I didn't pay to get wingbacks with good winger skills

This is a rating with wingbacks on defensive/wingers on offensive:

Pintendre Pittbulls
Player rating and Team formation
Midfield: poor
Right Side Defence: solid
Central Defence: solid
Left Side Defence: passable
Right Side Attack: excellent
Central Attack: passable
Left Side Attack: solid

Defense ratings are not that good because I started my inadequate backup keeper in that game, but you see what I mean. Got a formidable-solid-passable (form trouble) this past weekend with my solid keeper in the game.

Playing a winger offensive means more winger, less defense, but it's all good, since defende is a secondary skill and winger is the primary skill. Winger on offensive is the order that cost you the less. Compare it to playing your wingbacks offensive. In that case, it is more winger, less defense, where for a wingback, defense is the primary and winger is the secondary...

Same could be said with playing wingbacks defensive, you get more defender skill, les winger skill. Again, more of the primary, less of the secondary...

dola, forgot to say, scoring means nothing to a winger. It's winger first, playmaking, then passing and defending.

My wingers are (1) solid winger/passable passer, and (2) passable winger/inadequate passing.

How big of a role do you think stamina plays, since they are in the midfield.

(Also trying to modify my excel spreadsheet I use to pick my team).

Wingers and midfielders both contribute some to defense, I run a 4-5-1 and I usually have both wingers and one middie set to offensive and it doesn't seem to hurt my defense too much, but neither of my wingers and only one middie have any defensive ability, that plays a large role in how much they help your defense.

If your defense is good and you need the offense I would definately try setting my wingers at offensive if they have decent passing and scoring skills.

Dola

I also put my wingbacks defensive to make up for the loss of defense from putting my wingers and one middie offensive.

Stamina plays a role in how much effect the player's playmaking skill will come into play. Stamina and playmaking are sort of tied togther.

Other than the rare special events (i.e. the player was too tired and gave upa ascoring chance), stamina won't effect a wingers too much.

As I said, scoring has no effect on a wingers performance. When you play him offensively, it the winger skill that gets a boost and the defender skill is less used...

All 4 of my wingers are initial guys, and for the most part they don't have much in the way of secondary skills, and none of them have any defense at all, so I play both wings offensive. Seems to help.

cool. I'll do that for a while and see what happens. I usually have a middie at defensive as well, playing a diamond 3-5-2.

I just got to find a way to improve that weak central attack. Hopefully the pass. PM/pass passing/solid scoring 31 year old will do that. Probably overpaid at 82K, but I needed someone who can move the ball and sometimes score. Have to wait 3 weeks til he gets healthy though, and longer b/c of his wretched form :(.

Good passing from your inner mids will help improve your central attack. Playing a middie offensive should also help (middie offensive = more passing, less defending, reverse if played defensive). I usually play a middie offensive and the other defensive. One of them has inadequate passing, poor defending, the other has inadequate defending, weak passing. You gotta play with the strength of your lineup... :)

dola, all off them "more passing, less defending", etc, stuff can be found in the rules, but I find it easier to read on this site...

yeah, I've basically beein playing this lineup

D-mid - Carrasco inad. PM/pass passing/pass. def./exc. stamina/pass. exp. and form

mid - Uribe - solid PM/ wretched pass :(/solid stamina

off-mid - Barnett (18 year old trainee) - pass PM/pass./stamina/form

Selling Uribe this week, and hoping my new guy can step in and improve ratings. I should never have sold my solid PM/pass/scorer, but I needed money from his experience.

I generally play my one winger at Offensive when I play the 3-4-3 and both when I play the 3-5-2.

I get pretty decent ratings from it.

I too have noticed great results from setting wingbacks defensive and wingers offensive. The only time I don't set my wingers offensive is if I set them towards the middle.

On the ABC Tactics it says that playing Wingers "offensively" is the only special command that has no downfall.

I would add wingbacks played defensively too that statement too. It's all because you take advantage of their primary skill and you lose some of their secondary skill. A winger is there first to provide attack on the side, second to defend and a wingback is there first to provide some defensive stength to one side and second to help the attack on that side...

And if you look at the ABC of Tactics site, the guy says he almost never play his wingers on normal, almost always either offensively, or toward the middle. Same thing for me...

I think you do lose a little possession by setting your wingbacks defensively. I had two weak midfields when my team was much worse. Now the best I can do is poor eventhough my middies have improved.

From what I remember in the rules, your wingback's playmaking skil is not taken into account anywhere. Might be a matter of team spirit. I have noticed that since the reset, I have a harder time getting good midfield ratings. My team spirit is lower than at the end of last week, an I am PICing too...

The ONLY time I would consider playing a wingback offensive is if you have a frighteningly good (think DK's) defense, an insane goalkeeper AND, most importantly, my wingback has good playmaking skill and the stamina to make it stick.

When the majority of us started, wingback's playmaking wasn't taken into account. I noticed only because _panther pointed it out in another thread that they've added the wingback's playmaking coming into effect when played offensively (same deal as playing a central defender offensive).D-mid - Carrasco inad. PM/pass passing/pass. def./exc. stamina/pass. exp. and form

mid - Uribe - solid PM/ wretched pass :(/solid stamina

off-mid - Barnett (18 year old trainee) - pass PM/pass./stamina/formI'm not sure I'm reading what you mean right but it seems like you're saying that you're playing Carrassco as an inner midfielder with a 'defensive' instruction even though he's your best passing midfielder. What you end up with is an inner midfielder with an inadequate passing instead and now your central attack (and the wing attack side that he's on) is weaker. He's a better candidate to be playing as a straight inner midfielder. Uribe, on the other hand, is the guy who *should* be playing 'defensive', if you wish to go that route. His passing isn't going to get worse nor was it going to contribute to the offense very much anyhow. Also makes a decent candidate for the "extra inner midfielder" role. By the way, if I read your shorthand correctly, Barnett will need an extra level or two of stamina before he'll play at full potential. just got to find a way to improve that weak central attack. Hopefully the pass. PM/pass passing/solid scoring 31 year old will do that. Probably overpaid at 82K, but I needed someone who can move the ball and sometimes score. Have to wait 3 weeks til he gets healthy though, and longer b/c of his wretched form .Scoring effects nobody else except your forwards. You can have a team full of excellent scorers and the only ones that will actually benefit your offense are the ones on the forwards. To improve your central attack, your only options are either a better scoring forward or get better passing from both your forwards and inner midfielders (which is why I've always contend that passing is NOT as evil and hideous of a choice of training as everybody seems to say it is - perhaps not a long term training scheme but for a brief period, I think it can be greatly beneficial overall).
