View Full Version : The Real Most Wonderful Time of the Year-- The Trade Deadline

Although, as a Reds fan, it shouldn't be, because we go through this same process every year, and it sucks. But July 29-31 is great.

Jeffrey Hammonds signed. Appier released. Schoeneweis traded. Guillen. Mondesi. Glanville. Williamson. Sanchez. Miceli. Graeme Lloyd. And still the biggest day to go.

Big or small, I love them all (the trades, that is).

But I could also rant on forever (see: The Reds thread) about how Harang will amount to nothing just like every other mediocre pitcher we get every year, but I'll spare you all.

Good to see the Reds have had the kind of unbelievable season that franchises only pray to have when opening a new Ballpark..

Unbelievable.. and I like the RedLegs.

The Astros need a starter (especially since Roy is on the DL for the third time this year).

I hear they're interested in Livan Hernandez, and I would be all for trading for him...

The only player I REALLY hope the Reds don't deal is Boonie. Please, not Boonie.

You will regret it. He was awful in a pitcher's park.

Hey, we don't need Livan, WE GOT DAN MICELI!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well, the Cubs or Cards won't be able to add enough to catch us.

I'd like to get Lidle for the 'Stros, honestly. I'm more of a numbers fan than I am of scouts, and Lidle is, historically, a very strong 2nd half guy. You know what you're getting with him, which is what we need. A reliable guy to fill in as a 3rd starter behind Miller and Robertson.

As one of my former co-workers said when Livan was a Giant and would blow leads or give up too many runs:

"Fucking Livan"

I never could get that out of my head all season and I could only repeat it during the World Series when Livan blew it ... "Fucking Livan."

The trade deadline is by far not even close the best time of the year.

That title belongs to football season.

Well, he has demanded a trade and the team is trying to accomodate him, so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I heard Boone to the Yankees for Brandon Claussen and 3 million.

Shorty, why would you want to keep a player who demanded a trade? Any player who doesn't want to play in Cincinnati can go elsewhere. Our fans love the players, hate the owners. I really don't blame Boone for wanting to leave after his *coughsuck-asscough* father was fired.

BTW if the only move the Cards make today is to trade for Pat Hentgen I may be forced to light myself on fire.

For whatever it's worth, Lidle claimed that his second-half dominance was because he always spent the first half listening to his coaches, then spent the second half doing his own thing.

Of course, he said that at the beginning of this season so that the coaches would leave him alone. They did, he's gone out done his own thing all year and been horrible.

So don't get too excited about the second half reputation.

If Lidle doesn't like to listen to coaches, then maybe they should have returned the favor when he whined about pitching in a 4-man rotation.

Think A-Rod will be traded?

Ksyrup
07-31-2003, 10:17 AM
No. It appears to me that he just made those comments off the cuff and, at least from the reaction of those in the Rangers' front office, no one even knew he felt that way. Of course, they could be faking it. But I honestly don't believe they are shopping him. I think he just said what he said out of frustration. It gives ESPN a great thread to run with, though. And maybe it will lead to something in the off-season, who knows? I just can't see any team being willing to tie themselves to that contract, without a major restructuring. And that would take some time.

GrantDawg
07-31-2003, 10:20 AM
What ESPN says is that he would be willing to restructure, and that he is very interested in leaving. I don't know if that is true and I wouldn't be surprised if this is all hype.

Ksyrup
07-31-2003, 10:26 AM
Again, the Rangers could be misleading everyone, but it seems like this is something that just came up within the past couple of days and isn't something they've been working on or seriously thinking about. Of course, today isn't THE deadline. I wonder how many teams would make a waiver claim for ARod?

All of this begs the question: If he's willing to restructure to leave, wouldn't restructuring without a trade help the Rangers? The Rangers aren't so far away from contending, if ARod gives them some flexibility to get some pitching. I think maybe he feels like the A's and Mariners will make seriously contending for the Rangers a remote possibility for several years, restructuring or not.

Ksyrup
07-31-2003, 10:29 AM
Dola.

I also think the player's union would have something to say about the game's top money earner voluntarily agreeing to take less than he's "worth." If he fires Boras, maybe I'll believe it.

Watch the Yankees somehow get A. Rod before all is said and done and then ship out Jeter..

Keep in mind this is the MLB we're talking about folks, where the only thing you can count on in the end is the Rich Getting Richer.

The Mets are more believable. They would love to have him, and he would be perfect for them to build a team around.

I'd make Jeter a 2nd baseman and move Soriano to the OF to replace Mondesi. Jeter's overpaid, and only the Yankees can afford to overpay him. He's not a good SS, so he'd probably be just as adequate at 2nd.

What do they have to give up for him? I guess they'd have no use for Reyes and he'd be part of the deal, but what they have is precisely what the Rangers have been trying to get rid of - big contracts for declining-skills players.

What would the Rangers need to give up that contract? Not much, I would guess. A couple of AA players and maybe a backup.

Mondesi 's already gone, shipped to Arizona for Delluci and some other guys.

Basically a 'we don't want you in our clubhouse no more' kinda trade...

But presumably, ARod would restructure for the new team, so the Rangers have to get something of value for him. And even if he didn't restructure, you can't just get rid of the best player in the game and take nothing for him just to get out from beneath his contract. This isn't Carl Everett we're talking about.

I think they are going to stick with a Karim Garcia/Ruben Sierra/David Delluci super platoon.

I believe Torre wants to give Garcia a chance out there to be the main player.

Third base seems like more of a concern for the Yankees, thus the Boone for Claussen plus cash trade I mentioned above.

Ksyrup
07-31-2003, 10:55 AM
Like Torre has anything to say about it.

Seriously, I have this feeling Steinbrenner is ordering a big-name trade just to take the wind out of the sails of any deals Boston makes. It's not entirely out of the question to see them trade for Vlad or even Juan Gone - just because they can.

I also hear Reggie Sanders is on his way to KC. Pittsburgh making as many moves as the Reds.

That is a dumb reason to hate a player. You should be happy that he has a pretty legit shot to win a ring now.

I also wish they had kept Russ Ortiz. He was my favorite Giants pitcher.

I think Sabean's hand was a bit forced today with the return of Rueter's injury trouble.

clintl

I didn't like all the walks Ortiz gave up, but other than that, he was always a good pitcher. He and Schmidt were a good duo at the top of the rotation. I'd rather have Ortiz than Ponson, and they wouldn't have had to lose Ainsworth if they hadn't made the Ortiz for Moss deal.

Bad-example
07-31-2003, 03:57 PM
Yeah, Ortiz has always given up too many walks. But he is a horse, a solid number 2 guy.

Ponson looks like a good addition. I wonder if Sabean felt out his agent to see what kind of contract he is seeking.

I like the Giants chances again this year if they can avoid the injury bug.

clintl
07-31-2003, 04:18 PM
I like their chances, too. No doubt that Ponson will be an upgrade over Moss, and Jerome Williams looks really good so far. Every NL contender has a weakness, so anything could happen in the postseason. And the D-backs and Dodgers have shown no signs lately of being able to put together the kind of streak needed to get back into the race.
