I've always liked Calbert Cheaney since his days at IU. Indiana should have been the national champions his senior year, if not for the horrible officiating fiasco versus Duke in the Final Four.
In the NBA, he has never been a star, but I still really enjoy watching him play. He seems like a good guy.
I also like Tim Dwight in the NFL. I like his enthusiasm and the way he throws his body around with little regard for avoiding injuries.

I've always liked Calbert as well. Hmm.....
My favorite roleplayer in the NBA is Rafer Alston, the streetball legend (Skip To My Lou). He can play.
My favorite roleplayer in the MLB (may play alot, but never great numbers or well known) is Chris Stynes or Lenny Harris, both former Reds.
In the NFL it is harder because so many people end up out of the game after 3-4 years, but I always liked Donald Driver before he got 'big' last year in Green Bay.

I posted an article on Tim Dwight last year. He's a class act on and off the field. Some of mine:
Steve Kerr.
Juwon Howard. (hard, hard worker. a very genuine and nice human being)
Tyrone Braxton. (retired. Started at safety on the two Denver Super Bowl teams. This is a man who was the second to last pick in the entire draft when the draft was 12 rounds. He became a solid NFL player for 12+ seasons)
Rex Hudler

I was going to say Lenny Harris. I also think that Reds fans got spoiled with Stynes a bit, because he had something like 7 or 8 consecutive hits after we got him in the trade from the Royals a few years back.
I always liked Steve Kerr of the Bulls/Spurs too, I remember him from his Arizona days... dammit, I'm getting old. But then TroyF swiped that idea too.

Living in Toronto...i have yet to see this.If you mean he can play 6 minutes or so and not hurt you...you are correct:)
Now put him on the street...and that is a whole different ball of wax.No one can touch him streetball wise.

Ray Lucas when he was backup QB/situational QB for the Jets. It was just a lot of fun seeing him on the field with Vinny lined up as WR. hilarious shit usually.

Calbert Cheaney is my favorite IU player of all time. His NBA career hasn't been much, but he's managed to hang around for 10 seasons, not bad for anyone really.
I'll be watching Randle-El's career too. I never liked Pittsburgh, but I have to watch just to see how they use him. He's got more potential the the original slash ever did (and he was a better passer in college too)
Albert Bentley and Bill Brooks are my favorite second tier guys. Bentley was a 1000 yd back in the USFL, but played second fiddle to Randy McMillan and then Eric Dickerson on the Colts. Still, a workhorse who actually caught 71 catches on year. Although Brooks was our no. 1 receiver, he didn't get a lot of attention nationally, and I think he's still in the top 50 in catches in NFL history.
"Crash" aka Jim Jensen with the Dolphins was another one I always liked. Could player QB, TE, RB, or WR.
Today, I like: Randle-El, David Patton (NE), Joe Jerivicus(sp), tons of backup QBs, and Richie Anderson just to name a few.

Steve Kerr: As a Bulls fan, his speech at Grant Park was simply histerical.
Kerry Kittles: Unfortunetly for him, I think all he lacks is a killer instinct to become a Reggie Miller type player in the NBA but that usually tends to be what seperates the stars from the roleplayers.
I'll add more as I remember them.

Steve Kerr. He always was the quintessential 7th or 8th man who could absolutely kill you off the bench.

Rick Fox. He and Kenny Smith were my favorite college players ever and I always rooted for their NBA teams.

For the way he plays, Brad Ausmus of the Astros.

Michael Young, WR with Denver back in the late 80's/early 90's. They had the 3 Amigos, and then all this guy would do is come off the bench and seemingly make a 1st down catch on every 3rd or 4th down. I loved that guy!
Rex Hudler - hard working player, seems like a great guy. I even enjoy his broadcasting as well.

Bill Mueller, 3B for the Red Sox now (I loved him as a Giant, and was really disappointed when we traded him away)
Mark Madsen...gotta love the mad dog :)
Tai Streets, WR for the 49ers

Some of my favorites:
C Don "Sluggo" Slaught -- great hitting, platoon catcher with Mike Lavalliere with the Pirates for several seaons.
RW Rick Tochett -- rugged winger for several good NHL teams. I really liked him when he played w/ the Pens on Lemiuex's line in the early 90s.
TE Mark Bruener -- great blocking tight end for the Steelers. Almost always helps up fallen teammates before heading back to the huddle.

How could I omit Randle El. I love watching that guy play. Can you imagine what he would have done in college if he had enjoyed the same supporting cast that idiot Eric Crouch had? It boggles the mind!

I enjoyed watching David Thornton last year with the colts. He was a backup linebacker who played a lot of passing downs. After reading his bio when they drafted him last year I was really up on the guy and followed him throughout the season. In HS he was national honor society, class president, etc. In college he was defensive MVP on a North Carolina team that featured Julius Peppers.
However with the departure of Mike Peterson this year it looks like he will be starting, so no more second tier for him.

Dola.
Another good role player was my friend Scott in college. One time his character "Fraykus" killed a displacer beast with his bare hands after the rest of our party had been turned to stone!

NHL: Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby. Maltby especially. That game during the cup run vs St. Louis in which he had no stick, St. Louis had the PP and he blocked three slap shots, and was out for all 2 minutes fighting in the zone. It was incredible.
NFL: Santana Moss. His role is gonna' expand this year though, but up until now, amazing player to watch whenever he had the ball. So explosive. My all time favorite; Mel Gray. Man could move!
NBA: I'll go with the majority and agree with Steve Kerr. He was a 3rd or so option on the Bulls bench but when he was in, he didn't play like that were the case.
MLB: Scott Hatteberg. There's no one more boring in the MLB, but he does his job amazingly. He wears pitchers down, he find ways to get on base. He's someone you want to have in the lineup who will make sure that pitchers are always on their toes when he is up.

I was a big Phil Garner fan back in the day. He was like a light-hitting version of Pete Rose, only a lot better with the glove.

I always liked Steve Tasker and Mark Bavaro, throw in Charles Way seeing as how he never really got the chance to make it big.

I agree. Both of the time this has happened the past two years have been very exciting.

A lot of good names out there..so rather than repeating I'll add another new one...
Fred McAfee. Special teams ace, I think still with the Saints. They don't get the glory, but special teams aces are definitely very important in football.

Tom Waddle.
Never forget the game when he got knocked out on a crossing pattern & they gave him smelling salts on the sideline. Next series he was out there again running a cross & he got knocked out again.
He held on to the ball both times.
