Computer problem, please help

My computer has been coming up with a message that says it is shutting down. It then gives me a minute to save my work and counts down. It says that Remote Procedure Call(RPC) service was terminated unexpectedly. Does anyone know what that means, what the problem is, or what I can do about it? It did it a couple of times in the last 2 or 3 weeks, but it has done it 5 times tonight. I am typing this as quickly as I can because I am afraid it will do it soon again.

Airhog and ahbrady, just out of curiosity, I searched "Remote Procedure Call security flaw" in yahoo and it returned this article...

I was looking for the link myself. It is wierd that only my brother was targetted. We are all three on the same IP adress, but only his was shutting down. I installed the patch on all 3 machines just to be safe though.

Great, I just formatted my HD this morning to get rid of this problem. Oh well, I had everything backed up and nothing much to do today.

The program won't finish running before my computer shuts down. Thanks for the file, I'm sure that will fix it. But, like I said, the computer shuts down before it finishes the install. Any other suggestions. I've tried it 4 times so far. Again thanks for everything so far. Does anyone know how I got this error?

ahbrady, when you get that message (about shutting down) do this:

Click Start
Click Run...
type in "shutdown -a" in the text box there (without quotes)
Click Ok

That'll stop the shutdown. And then you can install the fix.

ahbrady: disconnect yourself from the network. Then your computer wont shut down.

I always find it amazing when one guy asks a question (computer related or else) and you have some 7 other guys jumping in to help him and we end up finding a fix. That's one of the thing I like abuot this little community we got here... Way to go guys!

This has been an issue that hit A LOT of people today. Microsoft is literally flodded with calls for this right now. Dunno why it hit so many people on this specific date.

You guys might want to make sure and check your system32 folder for a file called MSBlast also. Seems like part of this is that file being downloaded, and using it to get other folks.

I hadn't got the file yet, but I did have a registry entry with it entered, so I was close. Might search through your registry and delete anything like that as well, just to be safe.

edited: Changed WinBlast to MSBlast, that typo caused me some confusion searching for the file. :)

Thanks for all of your help. I agree with Frogman about the help all of you have given me. I was hoping that I would get a response in the next couple of days that might give me a number to call or something. Instead I got a dozen or so responses and within an hour it was fixed. I'm amazed and grateful. Thanks again!

This whole deal is copying the MSBlast file onto your PC, not sure what for exactly but it's a worm...can't be good. This'll get rid of everything.

Anyhow, mine was infected with it, so it's worth checking into to be safe.

Ok, what's the deal? Do you guys download a ton of stuff off of Kazaa/IRC/Whatever? Have no firewall? No virusscan? What OS are you running? (i.e. Is it something that I can easily avoid or are they getting through stuff)

I saw this on the news and they were a little coy about how it was spreading.

No, no, no, and no. :)

The problem with it arises from folks who don't keep their Windows Security Updates current. This is something they just patched up last month, so if you haven't kept up, you're at risk.

It's just a loophole in the code, and it effects XP, NT, 2000.

Firewall SHOULD help you out, Virusscan isn't going to help with this problem I don't believe, but it will stop the MSBlast file from being put on your PC.

Nothing to do with downloading anything or along that lines. You might want to run that update just to be safe, it can't hurt anything to do so.

It will be SP 2 for XP and SP 4 (I think) for 2000.

Just install the patch to be sure, it won't hurt anything.
