As most of you know, I am in the USAF. Part of being in the military is going on deployments (see 2 weeks ago). Another part is moving on to other assignments. Well, I got surprised on my first day back from the deployment with news of an assignment change to a base that has been on my "dream sheet," otherwise known as a base of preference, for 6 years. You can choose 8 bases/areas/states CONUS and 8 bases/areas/countries Overseas. This particular base has been my #2 on the overseas list... so I am pretty happy to announce that I will be moving, in February to: (drum roll please.....) Iceland!
It's a Navy Air Base, so it's run by the Navy, but shared with the Air Force. It's probably one of the best assignments in the Air Force, because it counts as a remote assignment (you usually have to do 1 or 2 if you stay in for 20 years), however, you CAN bring your family with you. The deal is, if you bring your family, it's a 2 year assignment, oppposed to a 1 year assignment if you are unaccompanied. It is also on a small island, so far away from military politics that you can focus on the job and not have to worry so much about the BS that comes with many high profile jobs, like the ones I've had in the past (I.E. US Strategic Command - the old Strategic Air Command - the one with control of the Nukes and space stuff).
So with that said... as I find out more about the job and such, I'll let you know. The Base is called Keflavik.

#2 on the list...congratulations on your new home, and enjoy the light of night in Iceland. (or is that,... oh, never mind.)

19-D, Cavalry Scout

I got to go to noplace in particular, detonate it, followed by rocking it with the .50, then spending the next 2 days cleaning it up.

Congrats..

I'm serving in the Army and recently found out I'll be headed to Lackland Airforce Base in San Antonio. Which is a welcome change after 3 years in Germany. Working in a nice air conditioned building as opposed to playing in the dirt and mud.

I was in Wiesbaden, great area, I loved it. The army part of being there sucked though.

My wife is an Army brat and spent a lot of time in wilflicken and villseck. I probably hacked those names up real bad... but I think she spent a total of 12 years in Germany. She'd love to go back. I'm thinking: world cup 2006? Not a bad follow-on assignment. :D

Lytic,

Congrats on getting your assignment. I hope that doesn't mean that the SPC FC will be relocating to Iceland as well. Take Buda Dragoner with you. He deserves a vacation . . .

neg... I'll remain in the USA, but I might have to move my team to it's rightful place of Massachusetts!

I don't suppose the GMs will mess with your team if you start logging in from an Iceland IP for a US team.

Very cool assignment, tho. What's Iceland like at all? I have absolutely no idea.

Copied from a page in the navy.mil domain:

"Located on Iceland's southwest coast and surrounded by a vast lava field, NATO Base, Keflavik is home to 5000 Americans who are stationed on the wind blown Reykjanes Peninsula. Exposed to the violent Atlantic Ocean, the peninsula suffers some of the country's worst weather. Average temperatures are mild, however, and range from 31 to 51 degrees Fahrenheit. Annual precipitation can be as high as 160 inches! Snowfall has been recorded every month of the year. Icelander's take the weather seriously."

Congrats, I think! I had a buddy stationed up there a few years ago.

I'm transferring myself next month from this ship to Great Lakes to teach for three years. Hopefully, at that point I'll be ready to teach and coach football in the civilian world!

:)

I'd be in a world of hurt if they did. I've logged in from four countries and two states.

Ah... my brother's in the USAF (security) and has been stationed there for 1 1/2 years. He hates it there. He's bored out of his mind. Of course, he doesn't have a family & used to be stationed in Rammstein (which I'm sure had LOTS to do). My mother's thrilled that he's so far away from the action, though :)

I can probably dig up his email for you, PM me.

Why do we have military bases in Iceland? Honestly... if the commies wanna attack Iceland, they can have it.

Now, Cabo san Lucas, that's a place we should have a military presence at... ;)

I'm sure it's more a matter of attacking from Iceland.

If that's a serious question... I think Red Storm Rising should give you a pretty good idea what happens if we don't control Iceland.

We also have a base on Greenland and Antartica... which were #8 and #1 respectively on my assignment preference list... I'd love to go to Antartica!

You're nuts, I was just off the coast of Antartica a few years ago!
