View Full Version : NHL 2004: "Do you bleed blue?"

Well, I almost took this game back to the store today. Played game after game and started liking what I saw. Much harder than previous versions and learning the game has been quite fun. Most things I didn't like right off the bat became extinct as I learned the game. Learning an EA game? :)

Anyhow, there are a few things that bother me here and there, but I decided to start a dynasty with the Blues.

Settings
Medium difficulty
5:00 periods
Penalties +2 from default
Fighting -1 from default
Everything else game defaults

"Today Blues ownership announced the time has come to clean house and start fresh. Joel Quenneville will remain as head coach, but GM Larry Pleau was fired and replaced by 32 year old Missouri resident, Todd Volmert. Although young and inexperienced, Todd has been a Blues fan all his life and hopes to take this team to a new level."

On keeping Joel Quenneville:
"He's been very good for this team and I wanted to keep him because he understands this team and has a great desire to win. It's my job to give him the best possible tools to win with." -Todd

On the Larry Pleau firing:
"This team has become stale and boring, the fans want a changeup and we believe Todd can take this team to the next level. It might take a few years, but fans are tired of first round playoff exits" -Blues ownership

It should be an interesting 2003-2004 season.....

You can schedule 3 different types of practices as well as days off in between games.

DO - Day Off (+4 Endurance, -2 Attributes, Morale +1)

Game 1
vs Phoenix

St. Louis starts off with a goal from [C] Cajanek to go up 1-0 early in the first period [Demitra assisted on the play]. A goal from [C] Johnson, made the game 2-0 in favor of the Blues after one period of play [Tkaczuk and Khavanov assited].

Second period gets Phoenix on the board with a power play goal by [LW] Nagy, [Langkow and Johnson assisting] Blues 2-1. Blues winger Tkachuk nets his first goal of the season, which puts the Blues up 3-1 [MacInnis with an assist].

St. Louis adds one goal in the third period to beat the Coyotes 4-1. It was [LW] Demitra's first of the year .

Overall I'm pleased with game one of the season, the crowd was into it, but Osgood stopped 27-28 shots for his first win of the season. Colorado's up next, should be an early season test for us.

vs Colorado (1-0-0-0) 2pts

Blues [LW] Demitra scores his 2nd goal of the season on the power play to put the Blues up early 1-0 [Khavanov gets the assist]. Colorado strikes back as [LW] Forsberg scores on the power play to tie the game at 1 . End of peroid.

The second period was all Colorado as they score three times to take a 4-1 lead on the Blues. Scoring for the Avalanche were Nikolishin [Foote], Foote [Forsberg], and then Foote again with his 2nd of the game [Forsberg].

Blues foward Boguniecki [Pronger] strikes early to make it a 4-2 game. Colorado remains strong and adds another goal late in the third to win 5-2, Sakic scores his first of the season to put the Blues away.

You can definitly tell the difference in Phoenix and Colorado. The Forsberg line hammered me all game long and I couldn't get much of a rhythm. Even without Roy, they are still one of the elite teams in the league.

Game 3 (1-1-0-0) 2pts
vs Nashville (0-2-0-0) 0pts

Penalties go back -1

Blues [G] Brent Johnson gets his first start of the season.

First Period:
Demitra starts it off for St. Louis scoring his 3rd goal of the season (short handed) and putting the Blues on top early 1-0 . Nashville strikes back as Eaton nets his 2nd goal of the season on the power play [Hartnell (3), Vokoun (1)] 1-1.

Second Period:
All Nashville as Hall nets his 3rd of the season to put Nashville in the lead 2-1 [Hartnell (4), York (1)]. Legwand gives Nashville a 2 goal lead with his 2nd goal of the season [Walker (2), Johansson (1)] 3-1.

Third Period:
Nashville comes out and really puts St. Louis in a hole, as Kloucek scores his 1st goal of the season and the Predators go up by 3, 4-1 [Arkhipov (3), Hartnell (5)]. Cajanek scores his 2nd of the season and the Blues cut the lead to 2, 4-2 Boguniecki (2), Pronger (2)]. Nashville holds strong, but Weight manages one through Vokoun's legs to trim the lead to 1 goal [Jackman (1), B. Johnson (1)] 4-3.

That's how the game would end and St. Louis heads home (1-2-0-0).

So far, our special teams are pathetic and I'm thinking about making some callups from the minors for our home opener. 0 for 6 on the power play is not good. We need a big win at home vs Washington.

I wouldn't worry too much about your powerplay with 5 minute periods. It's bound to be abysmal.

Go Johnson go! Kick Ossie out and let the Brent era begin.

(Note, the preceding comes from a guy that used Johnson in a 2003 league and ended up riding that horse to the Cup finals in back to back seasons, he was awesome for me.)

Are you playing or just watching in coach mode? Also, can you auto-schedule your practices, or do you have to set up every day off in-between 82 games?

Even though 20:00 periods play like 5:00, power plays and last minute of each period play in REAL time. One thing I really like about this years version.

Game 4 (1-2-0-0) 2pts
vs Washington (2-1-2-0) 6pts

Paid Attendance: 16168/19022

Roster moves:
Checking Line 4
[RW] M. Rycroft (sent down)
[RW] E. Nickulas (called up)

First Period
A tight checking game thus far, no scoring as both defenses shine. 0-0

Second Period
Again, defenses hold and both goalies are up to the task of keeping the puck out of the net. 0-0

Third Period
An unbelievable period as [D] Salvador gets kicked out of the game for punishing [RW] Grier in a fight late in the game. Demitra scores his 4th goal of the season on a breakaway with 7 seconds left in the game. [D] Gonchar turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Demitra used his speed to deke [G] Kolzig on the right side of the net to win the game 1-0.

What a great home opener! Osgood was unreal and my defense played like I know they can.

St. Louis improves to (2-2-0-0)

vs Edmonton (2-2-1-0) 5pts

First Period:
MacInnis gets the Blues on the board with his 1st goal of the season, assisted by Johnson (1). That would be all the scoring in the first 1-0 STL.

Second Period:
Deja-vu, MacInnis nets his 2nd goal of the game, unassisted, on the power play 2-0 STL.
Blues goalie, Chris Osgood makes a terrible pass out of the net and York scores a crucial goal short handed, his 2nd of the season 2-1 STL.

Third Period:
Edmonton comes out on fire, scoring the next two goals to tie the game at 2. Reasoner netted his 3rd [Smith (3)] and Smith scored his 2nd point of the night with a wrister past Osgood to put Edmonton in the lead [Comrie (2)] 3-2 EDM.

Martins would add his 1st goal of the season to tie the game once again [Mayers (1), Backman (1)], but York gets his 2nd goal of the game [Smyth (4)] and earns his team 2 more points.

I was in control of the game right up until I made a bad pass with Osgood. That shorthanded goal got the crowd back into the game and ignited the Oilers tonight. Not much else to say. Two good periods wasted on a mistake.

St. Louis goes below .500 (2-3-0-0)

vs Vancouver (1-2-3-0) 5pts

First Period:
The game got off to a slow start, but Sopel scored a goal late in the game to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead.

Second Period:
Tight defensive hockey game until Chubarov scores for Vancouver and they take a 2-0 lead into the third period.

Third Period:
MacInnis booms a slap shot home for his 3rd goal of the season, Vancouver goes into defensive mode and May nets an empty net goal to seal the deal 3-1.

I came out and took Vancouver right out of their game, but they kept a defensive pace and waited for me to make a mistake. The penalty killing unit needs some re-thinking.

Third Period:
Both teams were stingy with the puck, but Calgary prevails on a wrister by McAmmon. The Blues now have five losses.

Can you say, "Butt Whoopin"?

First Period:
Chelios gets Detroit on the board with a tip in past Osgood 1-0. Demitra ties the game at 2 with his 5th game of the season 1-1. Boguniecki puts St. Louis on top with a slapper from the left circle 2-1. The lead wouldn't hold as Lidstrom ties the game at 2. Weight scores on a screened shot to end the period up 3-2.

Second Period:
Detroit comes out of the dressing room and proceeds to go on a tear, showing St. Louis why they are an elite team in the NHL. Yzerman, Holmstrom, Schneider, and Hull all score unanswered goals to put the game away early 6-3. A total of 3 powerplay goals in two periods kill the Blues.

Third Period:
The Redwinds decide to rub it in as McCarty and Draper add goals to send St. Louis running out of Detroit 8-3.

A laugher, the first period left me feeling so confident and then it all fell apart in the second period. Detriot skated circles around my 3rd and 4th lines. I've won 2 games out of 9 in October and I'm glad this month is over.

Yeah, I really like Douggie. I think he'll have another good year this year for the Blues.

Well, it can' get any worse for our team than it was in October. Hopefully I managed the calendar better for November. We need to get off to a good start vs Chicago at home.

Roster Change:
Released [C] D. Tkaczuk
Signed [LW] K. Koltsov

Koltsov has an OVR of (66) and a POT of (95), he will get the start right away on the Checking line #3 with Cajanek and Mayers. He has great speed and agility, but he's only 22.
