I know, it's so passe (how do you insert those little accent marks?) to do one, but there's so many things to comment on from this weekend, and the college football forum is deadsville most of the time.
*First of all, being a Buckeye fan, it was nice to see them not have to go down to the wire with one. Then again, Miami (OH) beat NW 44-7 in Evanston. I'm steeling myself for the inevitable let-down when we finally lose one. But I'm betting it won't be against...
*Iowa. Michigan State's got themselves a team there. Jeff Smoker's not so bad when he's not on the sauce. Makes their loss to La. Tech look pretty fluky. And there's not a team I don't like to see lose more than...
*Notre Dame. But with Tyrone Willingham taking over, I was all set to start lessening my hate for the Domers. But it hasn't happened. Still enjoy it every time they get trounced by the Purdue's of the world. Oh, how it would do my heart good to see them lose to...
*Navy. Who dropped to 2-2 with a loss to 3-1 Rutgers. That's right, Rutgers is 3-1! Dare Rutgers dream of a bowl game? They've still got Temple, UConn, W. Va. (who look awful), and Syracuse (who haven't been good since last century) on the slate. Wishful thinking sure, but I'm sure the Scarlet Knight faithful are whispering it.
*What's wrong with Ga. Tech? They nearly beat Florida St., then they get trounced by Clemson 37-3, and barely beat Vandy in OT this week. Granted, Vandy is improved, but losing to Clemson 37-3 was not good.
*John Mackovic should never have been hired at Arizona. They used to be a power in the West, and now are a joke. They were on TBS in consecutive weeks, and those were 2 of the biggest blowouts televised in recent weeks.
*Speaking of TBS, who is doing the scheduling for their games this year? So far, they've had LSU and Oregon absolutely demolishing Arizona, and this week they actually showed Texas vs. Tulane. The "showcase" for JP Losman was interrupted by a stampede of Longhorns to the end zone. Losman may have skills, but it was hard to see any in this game. One of my fave quotes of the week eminated from this game: "We can't lose no more." -- Roy Williams, Texas.... So, you can lose some more, Roy? Time for some more better English classes.
*Is Kansas any good, or Missouri just that bad? I'm inclined to think the latter, but maybe KU fans can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel with this rivalry win.
*Will JoePa ever get another game-turning call his way? Maybe not until he retires...
*I-AA scores of interest to me only: Dayton 47, St. Peter's 6. Dayton was formerly a D-III power but was a casualty of the rule that came into effect in the late 90's that if you had a Div. I college hoops team, that your football team (if you had one) also had to be Div. I. They pushed (unsuccessfully) for a new Div. I-AAA for those teams only, like Butler, Valpo, San Diego U., etc. But failed. So now they toil away in Div. I-AA with nothing to really play for except pride, and a Pioneer League championship (whoopee!) which they seem to win virtually every year. It's hell being a non-scholarship team in Div. I-AA. They did try and play Yale a few years back, but lost something like 35-7.
Also, Furman beat Gardner-Webb 45-0. Go Paladins!
*I'm usually not a big SEC fan, but I hope Arkansas can put an end to the SEC East dominance in the title game. I like Houston Nutt. I like Matt Jones. I like that they beat Texas and Alabama. Go Hogs! That 'Bama game had a chain of events at the end that will likely never ever be duplicated again. Unbelievable. If you didn't see it, do yourself a favor and read a recap.
I guess I could go on forever, but I'll stop now. :)
