As if there weren’t enough Fastbreak College Basketball dynasties out there, I felt the urge tonight to add my very own. Mine will go the route resembling Marmel as I will start at a low prestige college and work my way up. And then I hope to eventually get a job in the Big Ten and succeed there. Coaching in the ACC would also be a great experience and something I would love to be able to do.

I really would like it if some of the readers (I hope there will be a few of you out there) help dictate just how this game goes. I want you to help me to decide whether or not it is time to jump ship if another opportunity comes along. If you think I should make a lineup change, let me know and we can stop and talk about it.

I could not decide what team to start out as so what I did was use the 2002-2003 rosters and began the career in 2002. I created my coach, simulated through the 02-03 year and then waited for a college to offer me a position. A few different opportunities came along, however in the end I took the job to coach at Gardner Webb. I know nothing of this school, except for the fact that it is in North Carolina and so getting recruits should be tough considering the other big basketball schools in the state. Gardner Webb has a team prestige of, get this, 2. They are independently affiliated and so they are not in a conference. This should be quite the challenge.

FBCB League Settings:

We won't have too much to spend on recruiting this year, although we do have a young squad so that should not particularly handicap us too much. All the AD is looking for is to improve the team prestige. I guess when you have a prestige of 2, there is only one way to go. Well, I hope atleast.

Now let's meet 03-04 team!

Honestly after a first look, our team does not necessarily seem that bad. I guess with such a low prestige rating I was really fearing the worst but I was pleasently surprised. We will not be making any postseason tourneys I don't think this year but I think we should be able to win our share of games.

Starting Lineup:
C Bryan Kobayashi – Bryan is a sophomore who could develop into a solid presence in the middle. He’s an alright scorer down low and can rebound the ball. That’s all I ask.
PF Tim Behrendorff – Another large body we’ll plug in the lane. Tim is a senior who should provide some scoring punch along with some solid inside defense.
SF Otis Daniels – Otis may be designated as a PF but he handles the ball well enough and is quick enough to try out at the 3. His size also suits him better at SF.
SG Tim Ludwig – Tim is our best outside shooter and I’m hoping he will be able to hit the open shot when the opportunities come. As a freshman, he could be a 4 year starter here (not that it is much of an accomplishment here)
PG Chris Wiggins – Wiggins is the prototypical SR leader on the squad. He has great floor vision and shouldn’t make many mistakes. Not a very good defensive player.

Being an independent, I had to schedule 23 games and you will probably notice that there is a lot of FOFC-related teams making the list. You will also probably notice a lot of Illinois based teams on the schedule. The reason for that being I am from Illinois and so I look forward to competing with the teams I grew up watching.

Game 1: Gardner Webb (0-0) vs. Campbell (0-0)

The game started off just trading baskets and we took a 36-29 lead. The 2nd half was all us however as we force 17 turnovers and we eventually took the game 78-57. Starting C Bryan Kobayashi lead the way with 17 pts on 6-8 shooting and 7 rebounds. A victory in my career opener, what more could I have asked for!

The score is 38-33 in favor of the opposition at half-time mostly due to our horrendous shooting (under 30% most of the half, finished at .375%.) We pulled through with the victory at the end of the game as 6th man Andre Manning led the charge with 12 pts in only 12 minutes.

Game 3: UC Irvine (0-0) @ Gardner Webb (2-0)

Too bad, our string of victories comes to an end here. While it was somewhat close at halftime, UC Irvine just blew us out in the 2nd half. We could not score a bucket to save our lives (37 FG%.) It seems what our team is missing is that one go-to scorer who can bail us out. SG Ludwig hoisted the most shots on our squad and he only shot 9 times.

Game 4: Gardner Webb (2-1) @ Northern Illinois (1-1)

I am excited for this game because DeKalb is about 30 minutes from my summer home and so I will have about 50-60 tickets to give out to friends and family. Heres hoping we put on a show and upset the Huskies.

Ugh. NIU scored the first 17 points of the game and it was essentially over before it even started. 17 turnovers didn't help. Another 36% shooting night for us and I am really concerned that our lack of touch is going to make this a tough season.

We make it through our first month and finish with a record of 2-2. Unfortunetly in our two losses, we did look really bad. As you can see from the player stats so far, no one in particular jumps out at you.

Game 5: Appalachian State (0-1) @ Gardner Webb (2-2)

We could really use a win here. We have looked pathetic in the last two losses and Appalachian State is not a very good team.

The two teams go back and forth with 6 point runs in the first half. Eventually when halftime comes Gardner Webb takes a 32-30 lead. Considering we are playing at home, this is too close for comfort. We outscore Appalachian State 30-15 in the second half and take the victory. This time it was our defense (App. St. shot 31%), especially in the second half which contributed most to our victory. Kobayashi grabbed 9 boards and Daniels led all scorers with 10 points.

Next we go on the road to play American University.

Game 6: Gardner Webb (3-2) @ American (0-4)

Taking a look at their record, I am hoping we can come away with a victory. American is a young team, mostly led by freshmen and so that explains the reasons for their early season struggles.

American really struggles in the opening half and we take the lead 30-18 at the break. American is shooting 29% from the floor and we are not doing much better at 36%.

American shoots a lot better in the second half and makes a closer game of it. With 4 minutes left they cut the lead to 3 but our backcourt tandem of Ludwig and Wiggins respond with baskets of their own and we take the game 66-58.

While our record is a very respectable 4-2, we have not exactly played the Dukes or Arizonas of the world. After the first six games it just seems like I have a team of roleplayers, no one jumps out at you and going into each game I have no idea who is going to step up.

Game 7: Cal State Fullerton @ Gardner Webb (4-2)

This game starts off with both teams shooting bricks, it took the 15 minute mark before either team put a point on the board. After that however the baskets started pouring in. We rebounded from the ice cold start to finish with 49% at the half and a 42-30 lead. The second half does not produce anything interesting as we continue our pace and win the game 75-59. PF Tim Behrendorff had a monster 16 pt, 8 rebound game and freshman Tim Ludwig had a great contributing day with 8pts, 5 reb, 4 ast.

Game 8: DePaul (2-2) @ Gardner Webb (5-2)

DePaul comes into town with a 2-2 record but some very solid players on the squad. I'm going to have to look out for PFs Andre Brown and DeLonte Holland along with guards Quemont Greer and Drake Dreiner.

This had "beatdown" written all over it at the beginning. DePaul shot lights out and was up 21 to 3 at one point in the game! We did not give up however and C Bryan Kobayashi scored 10 pts in a resurgence and at halftime we were down only 3, 34-31.

Wow, something special may be going on folks, our frontcourt dominated teh second half and we stole this game from DePaul 83-75! What a remarkable comeback! I was ready to just quick sim this game through but my boys showed they had heart! Depaul guard Quemont Greer was a one man show as he went 11-16 for 28 points. Ours was a more balanced team attack. We had 4 players score over double digits including a 10 point effort by backup C Simon Conn.

What an incredible game! We now have 6 wins, which honestly at the beginning of the year I would not guessed I'd have all year! Our frontcourt has showed to be pretty solid the past few games and our program is no where near the quality of a Depaul.

Next we travel down to Alabama and I get to meet one of my childhood friends who is an assistant coach there. Alabama A&M is struggling this year with a record of 1-6 but I hope our boys do not even try to overlook them. A&M is led by freshman C Richard Campbell and JR SG Richard Ricketts.

Game 9: Gardner Webb (6-2) @ Alabama A&M (1-6)

For some reason I had a feeling this game would be a letdown. While we exchanged baskets for the first 5 minutes, A&M went on a 12-0 run and started to pull away. With about 3 minutes left in the first half we made our own run to cut the lead down to 47-39 at the half.

That emotional high we came with after the Depaul victory into Alabama has been all but drained out. We lose the game 89-78 and really could never recover fully from the run A&M had in the first half. Scoring was lead by Wiggins and Ludwig although Ludwig had a horrid 3-12 shooting night. This is a loss I'd just as soon like to forget about.

I'm going to move right on to our next game.

Game 10: Gardner Webb (6-3) @ Birmingham Southern

What was I thinking scheduling all these games on the road? Birmingham Southern has two very good backcourt players who I have a feeling may run amok on our defense.

Yep, this game was never really close as BS jumped to a 20 point halftime lead. The final score was Birmingham Southern 71, Gardner Webb 55. BS's backcourt duo of Derrick Williams (19pts) and Jonathan Moen (27 pts) caused our defense fits.

Our already road-tired team will travel all the way to the midwest to face off against Eastern Illinois next.

Game 11: Gardner Webb (6-4) @ Eastern Illinois (3-5)

The player to look out for against Eastern is PF Danilo Seymour (12ppg) and PG Josh Gomes (13 ppg.)

The first half was a pretty good battle as Eastern held a lead as high as 8 and at halftime the score is EI 32, GW 27. Eastern's Josh Gomes has already scored 12 points and we are going to have to adjust our defense to try and stop him in the second half.

While we did shutdown Gomes in the second half, the other stud D. Seymour led Eastern to another victory. Our 36% shooting is the biggest culprit to our 3rd loss in a row.

Our last game of December will be against Jackson St. We really need a win here. After winning 6 of our first 8 games, I think it would be a huge letdown to end the month at a .500 record.

[b]Game 12: Gardner Webb (6-5) @ Jackson State (3-5)

We come out on fire in the first half and open a pretty good lead early. At the break, the score is 47-31 in our favor as everytime Jackson State makes a run, we respond with one of our own. Now I am just hoping we do not have a second half letdown.

Jackson State made a run to cut the lead to 8 but our guys held strong with the 76-61 victory. SG Tim Ludwig was the star as he poured 22 pts on 7 of 9 shooting.

Thanks for the kind words fellas! It's your great dynasties which inspired me to write one of my own. Balldog, I tried to schedule Baylor but they wanted no part of me which is why you don't see them on the schedule.

Our first game of the new year is once again in Illinois as we come to battle the Bradley Braves. Bradley is led by PF Danny Granger (20 ppg, 8 rpg) and SG Phillip Gilbert (19 ppg.) Yikes, things do not look too good.

Game 13: Gardner Webb (7-5) @ Bradley (5-4)

Gilbert and Granger combine for 30 first half points and Bradley leads 53-34 at halftime. The game was actually pretty close for most of the half but as we neared the end we could not buy a basket.

Well, there is nothing more to say besides we got our asses beat. It wasn't pretty and we lose the game 92-58. Gilbert went berserk and scored 36 pts on 14-25 shooting. Once again Ludwig lets himself get burned on the defensive end. Granger scored 23 points of his own and grabbed 13 rebounds. The only player to show up for us was C Bryan Kobayashi who had a respectable 14 points.

I am relieved to say our road trip is finally over and we get to play in front of the home crowd for our next game.

Game 14: LeHigh (6-6) @ Gardner Webb (7-6)

A terribly dissapointing first half and the game is just about out of reach for us. LeHigh shot 63% and we countered with a 29% effort. The score is 45-26 at the half. So much for a good homecoming as we lose the game 76-60. Kobayashi had a nice 11 pt, 8 rebound effort but that just was not enough today.

We fall back to .500 on the year. If you had told me before we began to play we'd be 7-7 through our first 14 games I would have been pleased but because we had such a strong run at the beginning of the year I can't help but feel a little dissapointed.

Game 15: The Citadel (3-9) @ Gardner Webb (7-7)

Things just keep getting bleaker and bleaker. We were never in the first half as The Citadel jumped to a 45-31 lead. It seems coming home for two games has done us no good, especially since we are not exactly facing top tier competition. Final Score: 71-60. Once again Kobayashi shows up with a solid 13 pt, 9 reb effort and once again it isn't enough.

We go back on the road, which I guess is a good thing now, and face off against Quinnipiac who fields a solid team this year. We are going to have to do our best to limit their SF Rashaun Banjo who averages 16ppg along with 5 rpg.

Game 16: Gardner Webb (7-8) @ Quinnipiac (7-5)

At first it looks like we had gone down this road before as Quinnipiac jumped to an early 11 point lead. But Tim Behrendorff led a charge and we came back and eventually took a 55-49 lead. We shot an incerdible 67% in the first half!

The 2nd half is both teams exchanging basket after basket. We hold a 6 point lead throughout the half and then all of a sudden Quinnipiac makes a 10-0 run at the end of the game and take a 4 point lead. We try coming back ourselves and fall short 86-84. Another loss, but this one really hurt, I thought we had it. Their SF Banjo had 21 points and 5 rebounds.

The last loss hurt even more now that I see we have to travel to Boston College for our next game. Boston College is led by a monster soph PF named Craig Smith. Smith is averaging 20 points and 7 rpg. Senior SG Andrew Bryant also chips in 17ppg and I just realized this game has "blowout" written all over it.

Game 16: Gardner Webb (7-8) @ Boston College (8-5)

If the game were merely 15 minutes, we would have squeezed it out as we played well and kept a 4 point lead. However our guys seemed to tire out and BC went on a run and took a halftime lead of 47-39. We don't score in the 2nd half until the 12:00 and lose the game 82-65.

We come back home this week for a game which I really hope we win. Loyola-Maryland has struggled all year and don't have any standout players on the squad.

Game 18: Loyola-Maryland (3-13) @ Gardner Webb (7-10)

The first half is a little too close for comfort as we keep a 4-6 point lead throughout but Loyola-Maryland keeps chipping away. At the half the lead grows to 9 at 31-22.

In what proved to be a hard fought game, I am glad to say we finally pulled through with a 59-53 victory. It certainly wasn't a pretty win (36% shooting) and not a single player was in double figures but we will take what we can get.

I forget to mention that January brought us our first recruit, SG Floyd Crowther. He's got a solid jumpshot and might become a solid defender down the road. With our depth in the backcourt (although Wiggins will be graduating) I may decide to redshirt Floyd a year.

Ok, game time, Idaho comes to North Carolina for a game.

Game 19: Idaho (5-12) @ Gardner Webb (8-10)

We ran out to a quick 8 point lead in the first half, however let Idaho back in it and at half time the score is tied at 35.

Idaho jumps out to the early lead this time as they take a 7 point lead however we make a run and steal the game 78-70. Ludwig was clearly the player of the game as he was the main horse who carried the team after it fell behind Idaho early in the second half.

That win was certainly a big one because next #14 ranked Virginia will be visiting and we're going to need a lot of things to go our way to come out with a victory. Virginia is a well rounded club with 4 players averaging over double figures.

Game 20: #16 Virginia (16-5) @ Gardner Webb (9-10)

We started out pretty well, half way through the first half we actually had the lead but shortly thereafter it was all Virginia. They kill us 116-88.

The boys are excited to be taking a trip down to Hawaii for their next game. I'm just hoping they are prepared enough for when its time to play.

Game 21: Gardner Webb (9-11) @ Hawaii (15-9)

So much for coming ready to play. Hawaii blows us out in the first half 45-25. The second half is not much better and the game comes to a merciful end with the score 99-49. What a pitiful display.

Things could not possibly get any worse right? That's what I was hoping for until I saw who we played next, #24 Miami. Ah crap. Miami is led by Player of the Year candidate PF Darius Rice who is averaging 25 ppg (he averaged 35 ppg last year!) and 6 rpg.

Game 22: Gardner Webb (9-12) @ #17 Miami

This isn't even close. Miami wins the game by 30, 83-53 but only because they played their scrubs most of the second half. I think we have reached the low point of the season.

Gardner Webb (9-13) @ Central Florida (11-13)

The first half went back and forth as both teams exchanged 2 and even 3 pointers. Central Florida does take the 29-26 halftime lead though.

Central jumps to a 11 point lead in the 2nd half and things are not looking good. We make a run and tie it with about 10 minutes to go however we fall short at the end 73-66.

We will finish out the month of February with games against Florida A&M and on the road at North Carolina A&T.

Florida A&M (14-11) @ Gardner Webb (9-14)

Florida jumped to an early lead however we really played shutdown defense for the last 7 minutes of the 1st half and take a 33-29 halftime lead.

Ah, the sweet taste of victory, it's been some time now. We broke away from A&M a little bit for most of the half. They did make a run to cut down the lead a bit however we held together and won the ball game.

And for the final game of February, we travel to play Florida A&T.

Gardner Webb (10-14) @ Florida A&T (12-14)

We shoot 57% and force 9 turnovers in teh first half and yet only lead by 3 points, 43-40.

We do spread things out more in the second half however and cruise to an easy 81-72 victory. We had 4 guys in double figures, including a great performance from 6th man Andre Manning (16 pts in 12 min.) Simon Conn, our backup C also pitches in 10 points and 7 rebounds as our bench has a great day.

And I am very excited to report that two 3* recruits have commited to Gardner Webb to play for us next year! I'm ecstatic since I thought with such a low prestige there would not be a soul out that that would be willing to play for us but looks like our solid season has won a few people over. I may even become a bit tempted to stay at GW over the next couple years just to see if I could really turn things around for this program.

We have 3 games left in my first ever season and if we can sweep then we can finish at .500! I am just hoping we can stay competitive, since I am already optimistic about next year. ;)

Gardner Webb (11-14) @ Charleston Southern (16-10)

Horrific shooting by both teams in the first half as neither squad shoots above 35%. Charleston has a 26-22 lead.

Charleston Southern recovers from it's bad opening half and unfortunetly we do not. We lose the game 76-61. SG Tim Ludwig was our offense as he poured in 17 points and 6 rebounds. We end up shooting 34% for the game.

Next we travel to New York to play a struggling Albany squad....

Gardner Webb (11-15) @ Albany (5-22)

Ay. This was probably the worst half of the season of many. Albany, a team with all of 5 wins had us doubled for most of the time and hold a 49-30 lead. Albany SG Steven Dowden (freshmen) goes off for 29 points and his backcourt partner Malcolm Brown has 19 of his own. Worst loss of the year I think.

And now, for the last game of the 2003-2004 season...

Gardner Webb (11-16) @ Cal Poly (9-18)

We're just not playing well at all. Cal Poly holds a 5 pt lead throughout the first half and hold a 32-27 lead.

Quite frankly I think we are lucky our season is over. Cal Poly ends our regular season 65-53 record.

Here's a look at our squad's final numbers of the season. Hopefully next year someone like Ludwig can take on a bigger role and shoulder this team to a few more victories.

We begin the 2004 season and it looks like I will be at the helm of GW for another year as no one else offers me a job. I am not as dissapointed as I first thought I would have been.

We raised our team prestige 3 points all the way up to 5! The AD is "delighted with my performance."

The higher-uppers also decided to upgrade our training facilities this season, there seems to be a buzz about our team this year.

FBCB News rates our class #132 in the nation, Kentucky had the #1 ranked class.

**Note HeavyReign**

Not sure if you're reading this but everytime I take a look at my training screen and then click to exit, I get a

Run-time error "9":
Subscript Out of Range

Luckily my game is saved right up until this point so I have not lost anything important.

I will start the new year tomorrow.
