MAKE THAT MIAMI/WEST VIRGINIA

Probably one of the more interesting Thursday night ESPN college football matchups this year, now made all the more interesting by the fact that WV is up 7-0 in the 2nd quarter, and Frank Gore has left due to injury. If Gore does not come back, they will have to rely for the most part on Berlin down the stretch, which could make it interesting. Could this be the traditional once-yearly Thursday night 'big upset'?

Might want to change your title thread, it's Miami-West virginia, not Pitt.

Er, that was stupid of me. I think I was thinking of last year's Miami/Pitt game. Or I'm just stupid. Probably the latter.

No prob. Just wanted to make sure you knew it was WV, not Pitt. Pitt-Miami did play on Thrusday nite last year in Miami, and have similar color and uniforms. Anyways, the Mountaineers are playin tough, Go Mountaineers.

Why did Rodriguez use his last time out?? 14 seconds left...a time out may have been useful if WVU could get into FG range after the kickoff...

That was an amazing game...and completely Kellen Winslow's fault that WVA didn't win. That was an amazing, clutch catch on fourth down. I have to say, I was very disappointed that Miami won (I love the underdog...what can I say? :)), but really happy that the game was so good.

I also disagree with the strategy of using all the timeouts at once to ice the kicker...I'm not disillusioned into thinking that WVA had a shot, but using up the timeouts didn't help.

While VT is probably the best team in the conference, Pitt isn't going to beat Miami so settle down.

I'm suprised noone has commented on the stupidity of WVU in this game.

They were playing an 8 man zone and rushing three, Miami was clueless and had 4th and 13. WVU then blitzes 3 guys on 4th down and they get beat on the play to Winslow. Utter stupidity.

I'm happy Miami won, so (a) they don't come into Tally all pissed off following a loss, and (b) FSU's strength of schedule didn't take another hit. Florida's already got 2 losses, NC State's got 3, right? And they were two of the better teams on the schedule. Miami needed to stay undefeated...at least until they leave town.

As I was reading through this thread, that was the thought that hit me. To me, it was the play of the game. Not that Winslow made a great play, but that he was allowed to be in one on one coverage to begin with.

All WVU has to do is play the same 3 man rush they had for the first three plays of the drive. At the very least you need to force Brock to make a big throw. They didn't. They turned it into a one on one situation where all Brock had to do was throw it over the LB.

You KNOW Winslow is coming down with that ball.

Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.

Ksyrup:

State has three wins (Western Carolina, Texas Tech, UNC-Chapel Hill) and two losses (Wake, Ohio State).

It's amazing how that loss to Wake has totally skewed perspective on our season. Win that and we're 4-1 and probably in the Top 15 with OSU as an expected, heart-breaking loss. If State's offense can keep outscoring everybody (frankly, the defense isn't going to stop anyone through the air from the looks of it...) they have a decent chance to be 7-2 heading into the nasty stretch hosting UVa, travelling to Tally, and closing with the Terps in Raleigh.

Back a little on topic to this thread, State has a near suicidal sked next year when Miami and VaTech sign on. We host Ohio State, FSU, and Miami in Raleigh and travel to Virginia Tech. Taking this week's poll as a temporary measure, that is #2, #3, #4, and #5 in the country on our plate. A couple of people on the State board have cracked that we should pick up Oklahoma and get a straight flush out of the deal.

Only 2 so far for the Terps: Northern Illinois and FSU. Their wins aren't that great though.

I thought Winslow was the best player on the field during the Fiesta Bowl last season and he looked like the best player on the field again last night.

He talks after every play, but he's got game.

I always thought a good stragety on icing the kicker would be to tell the refs ahead of time that you are NOT going to call a time out. Then have all of the coaches yelling to the defense to call a time out. And have some of the defenders stand up like they are going to call a time-out, but not do it. That would probably get into the kicker's head more than a time out that he knows is coming and may even get the kicking team to false start.

Playing that kind of psych game seems a little unmanly to me, but, at the same time, any edge you can give your team, you should take.

My question is this - Does Ohio State move above Miami in the polls?

Here's my reasoning - OSU started the season ranked above Miami, but because of a couple of squeakers got dropped below the Canes.

Now, Miami has nearly lost to an average Florida team and a pretty poor WVU. Do they deserve the same treatment that the Bucks received earlier in the year?

Possibly. I could see it happening, although I don't think it really matters at this point one way or the other.

Probably not because an average Florida team will be nationally recognized as better than any of Ohio State's opponents thus far whether its actually true or not.

Playing on a Thursday will help because the voters tend to forget about that game every week come Monday.

Really? I think NC State and Washington are both much better than Florida, and probably everyone OSU has played thus far has been better than WVU with the possible exception of Northwestern.

Like ice said, it doesn't really matter at this point, I'm just throwing the topic out there.

While the second part may be true, I think Florida and NC State are pretty even (though the quality is on opposite sides of the ball). Of course, your also ruling out the rival factor there (Rivals quite often play the game of their season against vastly superior teams, whereas you can in no way call NC State/OSU as a rival).

I can't think of a time I ever saw this work. It seems like every single time I can recall a team trying to ice a kicker he made it. I've even heard interviews with some kickers who said they were grateful for the extra time to gather themselves and concentrate. I think I'd rather have a situation where the kicker has to rush onto the field and beat the 25-second clock than giving him extra time to get himself together.
