IWS#49... This time it's not IWS#48

And away we go! Here is the breakdown of the results by question:

1. Name a charater from the Fat Albert cartoon, besides Fat Albert.

Answer Points
Mush Mouth 12
Dumb Donald 6
Rudy 2
Buckwheat 1
Fat Albert 1
Mudfoot 1
Weird Harold 1

A good number of answers, but Mush Mouth was a clear favorite.

2. Name a Tom Hanks movie.

Answer Points
Forrest Gump 18
Big 3
RadioFlyer 1
Saving Private Ryan 1
The Green Mile 1

A runaway winner. I really expected more variation in this one. "I'm with Stupid is as I'm I'm with Stupid does."

3. Name your favorite Operating System filesystem format.

Answer Points
WinXP 5
NTFS 3
DOS 2
Linux 2
Windows 2
.EXE 1
.jpg 1
.txt 1
ext2 1
FAT16 1
FAT32 1
Microsoft 1
Unix 1
Zuh??? 1

This one was all over the place. And in true IWS spirit, the most common answer was an incorrect one. A filesystem is the structure an Operating System uses to store files on your hard drive. In the Windows world, common ones are NTFS and FAT32. In the Unix and Linux world some examples are EXT2 and ReiserFS.

4. What city outside of the US would you most like to move to?

Answer Points
London 12
Paris 4
Amsterdam 1
Hononlulu 1
Melbourne 1
Milano 1
Munich 1
Rome 1
Tokyo 1
Vancouver 1

Another bit of a surprise with the number of London votes. But there was a good deal of other cities mentioned.

5. How much do you spend on groceries in a month?

Answer Points
$200 8
$100 4
$250 2
$300 2
$500 2
$150 1
$25 1
$350 1
$400 1
$1000 1
null 1

Another one with a wide array of answers. But the grouping seems to be consistent.

6. How many credit cards do you carry?

Answer Points
3 14
2 7
0 2
7 1

Hmm, that's strange. No one entered 1 or 4. 3 was the clear favorite on this one.

Congrats to Anxiety! This was a very close competition. I was relieved when I was that MIJB#19 didn't win. With the Cubs and the Red Sox this close to the World Series, a victory by out Dutch friend may have been the final piece of the apocalyptic puzzle!

London!!?!? That's the last place I'd want to move to :(

I figured lots of people would say Milano because that is where cartman resides. For shame.

MikeVic,

Gotta agree with you on that one. London isn't a very pleasant city. Horrible traffic, incredibly crowded subway, and in general, an unpleasant place. There are some nice points, and it is a great place to visit, but a horrible place to live.

And for shame Shorty, trying to kiss up to the question giver. Milano is much like London, in that it is the armpit of Italy. Lots of pollution, and horrible traffic. That being said, the women here are incredible, and it's only an hour to the Alps and Lakes region.

The lack of votes for Toronto is inexcusable.

HOLY SMELTING POT!!! I actually won? Damn! I think that 've finished in the top 10 like three of four times total! Blast. Now I gotta think of some questions....

I said London because it's probably the biggest English speaking city in Europe. Personally, I would rather live somewhere in Germany, but I figured loads of other people would say London.

Damn, MC must have been trying to suck....

Seems a little unfair to snip at the "top answer" for question #3 since it was an incorrect answer... from my best guess, you got something like 75% "incorrect" responses.

And as nearly as I could tell, I would have won this one if I had just broken my "Weird Harold / Mushmouth" tie the other way. Made a huge difference, of course.

For future versions, I'd point out that the usual scoring system calls for the individual answers to be multiplied to get the total score. I haven't checked to see if it matters, but I still believe that a product (multiplied) is a better indication of the total effort than a sum (addition). Sorry if that wasn't clear from the original wording, or my response in the puzzle thread (I mistakenly took that for granted).

I hope this thing gets back on track... it's fun to have this going, I think.

I would have tied Anxiety under that scoring, although there may be someone below us who would have passed everyone.

I'd complain about that if I could find a way to argue that the scoring system would ever effect my answers.

That's what I was asking about before, the formulas used to compute the scores. I saved the data, so I can easily update the scores if I knew the proper way to compute the scores like previous contests.

Tied for 2nd?
Oh crappy Microsoft!

Actually, the scoring seems wrong, isn't it supposed to be the multiplification(sp?) of all scores and not the sum of all?

Dola.

I might have to forfeit the next IWS, chances are slim I will have internet access in the 5 days after tomorrow (unless I really, really feel the need to school on Thursday or Friday just for the sake of being able to have internet access. On the othher hand, strikes at the railroads might force me to go afterall on Thursday or Friday in stead of Tuesday.)

Not a bad showing, but it would have been nice to see some more correct answers to #3. That may have cost me this one...

I thought of Toronto, but went with Vancouver instead. Blame it on SARS. I was the only one to vote Canadian though.

Shorty - I scored a 4 last IWS. And that's with taking the product to arrive at the score.

You know, I almost went with FAT32...not that it would have mattered. I think if I get to host another IWS I'll ask what everyone's favorite Perl subroutine is.
