I've been trying to pull a solid keeper from my solid youth squad all season and haven't had any luck. I've gotten 1 passable and everything else has been total crap. I finally have decided to give up and buy one. Here's what I got:

Juan Luis Ramallo (17382712)
21 years, passable form, healthy
A pleasant guy who is balanced and dishonest.
Has disastrous experience and weak leadership abilities.

Nationality: Espaņa
Assessed value: 361 000 US$
Wage: 3 192 US$/week including 20% Bonus
Owner: Fairfax Fizz
Warnings: 0

Stamina: wretched Goaltending: solid
Playmaking: disastrous Passing: disastrous
Winger: wretched Defending: disastrous
Scoring: disastrous Set Pieces: disastrous

After looking through several countries I found this guy for $170,000 and picked him up. Was this a decent buy or did I overpay?

i'd say you payed slightly below average so yeah.... it was a good buy.

I would say it is a good buy, this keeper has a pretty high value, so he is not a just popped to solid keeper...$200k seems to be the going rate for mid level solids (like this one) so you saved $30k...

The only thing I don't like, is that he's a foreign keeper. Keeper's have higher than normal salaries to begin with. Take away the 20% salary bonus, and he makes $2,650 per week. That's $530 per week, give or take a $, that evaporates. Not a big deal really, just a little thing. Over the span of a season, that's an extra $8,480. Again, not a big deal. You just have to figure it against the long term cost of having a foreign keeper v. a countryman of yours.

If you take Doug's #'s, you're still ahead, compared to average, going into your 5th season :)

After doing some more searching, I'm pretty happy with the pickup. I figure I can sell my current keeper for $75K, so that will help pay for this purchase.

I'm guessing he'll put up 3 stars with an outside chance that he could put up 3 1/2 if his form improves to solid. Does that seem reasonable?

I think the buy is okay, not much to say on it. Here's how I usually think about a buy: if he fills a need in your team (as this guy does) and the price was around market price, then it's a good buy.

About stars, I'd highly doubt you'll get 3 1/2 stars out of him though, at least not before he jumps maybe two levels of experience. My keeper is a solid one (was pulled like that, yeah hate me) and his value started at 410k, drop a little for a few weeks in a row, down to 376k and inadequate form, but is now back up to 416k and passable form, and all of his games have been 3 stars. Maybe he's very close to pulling a 3 1/2 stars performanc and I don't know what I'm talking about then, this is also a strong possibility :)

You could be dead on FrogMan. I was basically guessing based on my "passable" keepers I've had. They generally pull 2 1/2 stars at inadequate or passable form and occasionally pull 3 stars at solid or excellent form. In any case, I expect this is a decent upgrade for me and should solidify my 2nd place finish this season in my (very weak) series.

I am not so sure about that, I pulled a solid keeper a few weeks back, his value when I pulled him was $370k, only 9k more than this guy and he has put up 3.5 stars for the past 5 games all with solid form... If that guy gets to solid form he should be able to put up 3.5 stars. I am not sure on this but I would think stars are like most things in hattrick where we have a certain # but in reality my guy could be putting up 3.6 stars, and frogmans putting up 3.4...I am not sure if that is how it works or not but I would think so.

also- my keeper is valued at $405k in solid form.

Doug, as I said, I may be completely wrong about this, or my keeper may be at 3.45654654654654654 stars right now in passable form :)

When rereading my statement, I realized that the "highly doubt" was probably a bit severe term for me to use. I was simply stating what I had experienced with my keeper, with disastrous experience and passable form at 416k of value.

the assessed value may be a little misleading as well. If FM's keeper had inadequate stamina for instance and Doug's had wretched that would account for Doug's keeper actually having more "keeper" talent than FM's even though the assessed value slightly favors FM's guy.

That's actually one of the reasons I'm pleased with this guy. He has nothing but keeping, so I know where his value is coming from. :D

He won't get 3 1/2 stars in solid form. My keepers value in passable form is 371k and in solid form he doesn't get 3 1/2 stars.

And from what i've heard, even if a keeper has excellent stamina it doesn't effect his value.

my keeper actually has wretched stamina, up from disastrous when he was pulled. So, I'd say when pulled at 410k, he was pretty much all keeper, even though I'd tend to believe what Havok said about stamina since I went back and looked at all my keepers (former and current ones) and tried to find some correlation in value increase with stamina increase and could find none...

Why would Doug's guy valued at 370K be able to pull 3 1/2 stars at solid then?

Maybe he was in very very high solid form. There are different levels of each form. So maybe thats it, or maybe my guy was in very low solid form.

high solid vs. low solid

ahh.. ok, so my guy could possibly get 3 1/2 stars in very high solid or excellent then? But I should expect 3 stars most of the time.

Thanks for the info guys.
