I just got FOF 2004, and can't install it. It starts for a second, then nothing! Here are my specs:

P4 - 2.4 gig
1 gig RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Soundblaster Live 5.1 Platinum
Windows XP Home

Any ideas? Thanks a ton!

For starters, you might try installing on a clean boot and making sure all of your firewall/antivirus software is turned off. Here are some instructions for a clean boot. If that doesn't help, redownload the file, because maybe it got corrupted in transfer (though unlikely). If nobody can help you here, go to solecismic.com for the technical support email address.

Clean boot instructions:

I tried the clean boot and got no further. I sure hope I can fix this as I'm dying to play!

Did you ever try the demo? If not, download it and try to install it. This obviously won't solve your problem, but it might help to isolate it so we have a better chance of figuring it out.

No, I haven't. Saw it was available so just bought it right away. I'll try that right now and report back in a few...

What exactly are you clicking on to try and install it? I had a little trouble at first because I thought that the blue/grey icon that looks like waves or ship's sails was the instillation file. I clicked on it several times, it went through some motions, but the game never started. After a little while I realized that icon just set up the FOF2004 file in the Solecismic folder in my programs folder. I had to go into the FOF2004 folder (My Computer > C Drive > Program Files > Solecismic Software > FOF 2004) and click on the setup icon in there.

Hope this helps. There's a good chance that you knew all that already though...

I am clicking on the waves file or whatever. However, there is no FOF2004 folder anywhere.

I'm not sure then. When I clicked on the wave file I got a screen saying that it was initializing or something like that, and then it just went away. That's when I had to go to the FOF2004 folder. If nothing happens when you click on it I'm not sure what to do...

Whenever I have any problems I just re-boot the computer and that sometimes helps....

Well, to make it even more of a mystery. When I cntrl-alt-delete, it doesn't show up in applications, but in processes I see "FrontOfficeFootball2004.exe" listed. Nothing ever happens though.

I'm just bewildered by this...

(I'mm going to assume you're having a problem installing as you aren't 100% clear)

Make sure you have the latest update to XP. The lastest SP fixes a problem FOF is known to have with XP.

Make sure you have all of the latest drivers for everything in your system (I'm sure you do, just sayin)

Add/Remove Programs -> Remove FOF 2004 (if it's there)

Control Panel -> eLicense Control -> is there a Solecismic Software folder in there? If so are there any licenses in the folder?

Redownload FOF 2004 from the ViaTech site and reinstall. What does it do? Does the program hang? Freeze? Seemingly do nothing? Still no Solecismic Software forlder in Program Files?

Obviously do these from a clean boot. Anti-virus shouldn't do anything but shutdown all non essential background programs when trying to install.

email -> [email protected] and/or [email protected]

or give us as much info as you can and we'll keep tryin to help ya here

Mybe a stupid question, but are you the winxp admin user? if you're a restricted user you can't install mostly of the software.
Check that, mybe that is your problem, just a suggestion to try to eliminate possible causes.

I was not able to install the demo. Man, this is frustrating. The wierd thing is, it shows up in processes, but not applications when I check my task manager. How do I check to see if I'm the sys administrator? Maybe that got changed by accident, but don't even know how to check it or change it...

Check at

My windows is in spanish language but i suposse you can find it with this:

Go to START -> Control Panel -> Users Acounts and check there if you have some acounts, and if that is the case, check if your user is Administrator, restricted user etc. If you are a restricted user, you will need to close the windows session, start again as administrator and give admin rights to your user name.

I checked it and I am the administrator.

DANG! There has to be an answer...

This is just a thought and I'm not sure if XP allows this but you could try installing it in safe mode.

This is obvious, but have you run scan disk and virus scanner on your drive to make sure there are no errors or viruses? It's strange because nobody else has reported this problem.

Also, I just want to make sure I understand: Are you seeing any of the setup program activity when you execute the file, or does nothing at all happen and then you can see it in the processes?

Yes, the setup program starts, and then disappears. It appears to be only this as I downloaded several demos from Fileplanet and they all installed without a hitch. I REALLY want to play this game, but it looks bad. I haven't tried the safe mode thing yet, but I did with a totally clean boot and got the same result.

I have all the latest drivers, but can't believe that is the issue. This doesn't exactly tax my Radeon 9800 Pro. Sound isn't an issue at all.

Very curious...

Another suggestion:

Right click on the frontofficefootball2004.exe file and choose "extract to". Tell it to extract to a folder on your desktop. When it is done, go into that folder and run the setup.exe file.

I have a similar problem: every time I open the FOF2004 executable I get a warning message from my virus scanner (Sophos Anti-Virus), telling me that the "W32/Dafly-B" virus was detected in a .tmp file in my Local Settings\Temp folder, and that access to the infected file is denied. FOF then appears to load normally. None of my other applications trigger the virus scanner.

I've since ensured that my virus identification file is up to date and includes this above-named virus, scanned my entire HD (in Safe Mode from a write-protected drive), and found no viruses. But there's something about FOF that keeps triggering my virus software.

Anyway, I know others have suggested that you disable your virus software, but on the off chance that you haven't tried it yet I'd strongly encourage you to do so. It could be that your software is interpreting FOF's behavior as viral, and intercepts FOF before it can load.

Except I have tried to run the setup on a perfectly clean boot. This is the only program that I am having this trouble with. Sure hope I can solve the mystery...

Great idea. Tried it, got the files extracted to a temp directory, but still couldn't do anything. Double-clicked on setup and nothing. Maybe it just won't run on my computer, but I can't believe that...

Oops...I glossed over the post that mentioned that.

Damn. That's really peculiar. And I'm afraid I don't have any ideas that haven't already been covered. Hopefully Jim can help you resolve this.

Your problem isn't isolated. It just seems more severe in this case. I had a similar problem but it worked after I rebooted. I'm still wondering if installing in safe mode will help. While a clean boot is close to safe mode, I've still seen things work in safe mode that wouldn't work under a clean boot.

I can't firgure out how to do a clean boot in Windows XP. I boot from the CD, but it just wants to re-install XP. Otherwise, I just have the option to re-boot.

Other times where I have run across this is because of temp files that have accumulated over time.

At a DOS prompt (click Start, then run, then type in CMD), type the command SET and hit enter. You should see a couple of entries like TEMP= and/or TMP= and a path after that.

Make sure you have no programs open, the open the folder listed. You can safely delete all of those accumulated files. It is normal to get a message that one or two files are in use.

After doing this, you probably will notice an increase in speed and stability.

The reason those files get left behind is because programs use the TEMP folder as a kind of scratchpad to keep info while they are running. The program is supposed to delete these files when it is through, but many times they get left behind. So when another program tries to create a temp file with the same name, bad things happen.
