In the mailbox...
Dana Grant, an offensive tackle, has left your team because of a lack of playing time.
Richard Jordan, a punter, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class.
Deron Meyer, a wide receiver, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class.
Shawn Tracey, a safety, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class.
Freddie Ferguson, a defensive end, blames the breakup of his relationship on a lack of free time during the past season.
Chuck Zellner has retired from his position of scout, Southwest region.
Marc Cerny has retired from his position of scout, Mid-Atlantic region.
D.J. Southard has been hired away from his position of scout, Great Lakes region.

2005 Roster - Offense
Quarterbacks
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate
Morton, Joseph 16 QB So* 33 58
Weathers, Thurman 7 QB Fr 5 43
Bush, Dan 11 QB* Jr* 20 20
Everson, Geoff 2 QB* Jr 8 18
Ok...we have a combined 42 passes thrown amongst all these guys, so experience is not going to be a positive going into this year. I redshirted Morton this year, and will probably do the same with Thurman Weathers this year. Quite frankly, even though he has yet to play in a game for us, Morton has looked like our best bet here. This is what he was slotted to do when we recruited him -- he will start in 2005.
Runningbacks
Atkins, Duane 27 RB Sr* 31 51
Bracken, Jamal 46 RB So* 65 65
Cooley, Darrin 34 RB Jr 18 19
Givens, Tyrell 21 RB Sr 33 33
Kemp, Jake 29 RB So* 67 98
McDonald, Trevor 38 RB Jr 20 27
I liked where we are at this position. I redshirted our two studs last year (Bracken and Kemp) and they will get the majority of touches this year. In case of failure, Duane Atkins can provide some depth as he carried 83 times for 346 yards last year in a backup role. According to my scouts, Bracken looks like more of a breakaway type runningback while Kemp looks like the kind of guy who can "bring it" in short yardage situations. I look forward to seeing these guys mature in my dynasty.
Fullbacks/Tightends
Collier, Lester 31 FB Fr 16 70
Craig, Lester 47 FB Jr 29 44
Marr, Derek 32 FB Fr 22 48
Sellers, Brock 22 FB* So 11 11
Bailey, Dominic 86 TE So 23 76
Contreras, Paul 84 TE Fr 31 54
Duncan, Christian 81 TE Sr* 18 44
Tasker, Adrian 83 TE* Jr 24 26
At fullback, Lester Craig will continue to start, and I will redshirt Lester Collier. Collier's future ratings look excellent, but his red and green bars don't bear this out. I'm going to sit him a year and find out what happens. Freshman Derek Marr already looks like a monster in short yardage situations - I'm gonna give him the ball.
On the tightend front, Dominic Bailey, who started 3 games last year, returns as our starter this year. Though his future ratings look impressive, it continues to be untapped potential, as he did not improve as we had hoped in the offseason. I will reshirt Contreras as his most outstanding attribute thus far is his ability to run laps without getting tired.
Wide Receivers
England, Chester 3 WR Jr* 28 42
Fisher, Phil 8 WR Fr 14 68
Hume, George 5 WR Sr* 35 35
Moss, D.J. 82 WR Jr 20 40
Meyer, Deron 89 WR* So 10 19
We've been very weak here, and I unfortunately did not bolster this position as I had hoped. However, the one recruit I brought in, Phil Fisher, will definitely be a big play receiver down the road (just not now). He's definitely not what you'd call a possession type guy, but he will have the occasional big play. Again, we will have to concentrate considerable recruiting at this position.
Offensive Line
Bishop, Larry 50 C Sr* 32 62
Borders, Richard 57 C So* 30 51
Witherspoon, Marshall 51 C Sr 20 52
Greene, Jeremy 71 G Sr 19 19
Kirtsey, Daryl 73 G So* 36 67
Rasmussen, Jeff 66 G Jr 14 38
Keating, Mario 68 G* Fr 6 25
Gargaro, Rusty 77 T So* 31 75
Lucas, Corey 64 T Fr 3 83
Messenger, J.B. 76 T So 37 70
Roberson, Rick 65 T So 22 35
Jordan, Freddie 63 T* Sr* 19 27
Rollin, Malcolm 69 T* Jr* 10 44
Larry Bishop returns to start at center. However, he will be pressed by redshirt Richard Borders. Marshall Witherspoon will continue to see limited action, as he has improved only minimally during my tenure here.
At guard we're not very deep, and return 0 starters from the year before. Senior Jeremy Greene and redshirt Daryl Kirtsey will probably get the starting nods here. I really, really need to bring in some quality guards this year.
J.B. Messenger returns to his starting position at left tackle. He's a true sophomore and performed admirably his freshman year, starting in all 11 games while contributing 14 KRBs and allowing 7 sacks. Not bad for a true freshman. On the other side, I'll probably start redshirt Rusty Gargaro and see how he fits in. If he fails, sophomore Rick Roberson will get the nod.

2005 Roster - Defense
Defensive Line
Ferguson, Freddie 78 DE Sr 15 58
Griffith, Trent 98 DE So 14 68
Monroe, Grady 72 DE So* 39 59
Wooden, Reuben 79 DE Fr 12 72

Wooldridge, Stanley 99 DT Jr 28 37
Jeffries, Joseph 97 DT* Jr* 22 27
Kennison, Jesse 92 DT* Jr 15 45
Wow...lots of depth here. You can see we've been focusing on this area when hitting the recruiting trail.
At defensive end, we have no returning starters. Redshirt Grady Monroe will slot in here and we'll mix and match between Trent Griffith, Rodney Lincoln and Freddie Ferguson. We plan to redshirt Reuben Wooden.
At tackle, starter Monty Burton returns for his 3rd year. He's started in all 23 games for Maryland and although not a superstar, we certainly appreciate his consistency :). At the other spot, Rufus Kevorkian and Stanley Wooldridge look to split time. We will redshirt Eugene McCormick.
Linebackers
Clouse, Perry 44 ILB So* 28 52
Phillips, Bryant 41 ILB So* 21 54
Schwartz, Kerry 90 ILB Sr* 13 43
McGee, Dale 52 ILB* Sr* 22 22
Quinn, Rickey 95 ILB* Jr 26 30
Singleton, Doug 40 ILB* Jr 9 32
Berberich, Adrian 54 OLB Sr 24 24
Matthews, Cris 59 OLB So 66 77
Sinclair, Rondell 56 OLB Sr 20 35
McDaniel, Robert 49 OLB* Sr 16 16
Dale McGee returns as our ILB, but he'll be pressed by redshirts Perry Clouse and Bryant Phillips. On the outside, our one true stud, Cris Matthews, will return after posting 120 tackles, 29 assists and 19 TFLs as a true freshman. On the other side, we have a number of non-descript seniors, and I will definitely have to recruit at this position.
Secondary
Graham, Jerald 25 CB Fr 17 36
Mansfield, Casey 30 CB Fr 22 72
Bratzke, Steve 43 CB* Jr* 18 18
Finch, Howie 39 CB* Jr 20 34
Hulsey, Pumpkinhead 42 CB* Jr 29 29
Abdullah, Oliver 23 S Jr 17 33
Boyer, Wesley 35 S Fr 28 71
Conway, Curtis 33 S Sr* 25 25
Lashley, Ricky 45 S Sr 40 40
Lowe, Clyde 36 S Fr 40 81
Tracey, Shawn 37 S* So 8 26
Cornerbacks are definitely not a strength on the team. We return Pumpkinhead Hulsey (11 starts, 1 Int) as a couple of backups. Casey Mansfield is a prize recruit, and will redshirt.
At safety, we return both starters in Curtis Conway and Ricky Lashley. Clyde Lowe and Wesley Boyer will redshirt and be our future at this position.

Our first week we have off, so I concentrate on recruiting. Looking at our roster and our needs, I will be concentrating on the following areas:
WR! (2-3), C, G, DT, LB!(2-3), CB, P and then just general filler. Again, I will start in my homestate and then gradually move around, allowing only one contact per week and scholarship offers only after initial contact.
I always check to see if we're idolized, and we are by one player in the entire state (a safety with very little value) :( Navy has 4?! I'm really going to have to get them on the schedule when I'm better, so I can take it to them. The state of Maryland has 4 Top 100 prospects (a C, G, WR and RB). Unfortunately for us, they're all concentrating on academics, but we'll give it a shot anyway.
We visit 4 linebackers, 3 wide receivers, and a slew of others who will all probably turn us down.

Last meeting: 2003, West Virginia 38, Maryland 10
West Virginia wins the toss and elects to receive. They drive down the field on us, but miss a 41 yard FG. Starting on our own 24, Morton throws the first pass of his collegiate career and completes it to the FB for a 10 yard gain. He then follows with an option play for 8 yards, and two plays later passes for 16 more. 1st and 10 at the West Virginia 39. Morton hands off to Kemp for a 4 yard gain. Morton is hurt. This appears to be a serious injury. Dan Bush takes over, drives down to the West Virginia 16 and we make a 33 yard FG to take the early 3-0 lead. That was the highpoint of the day for us, as we lose, 39-3. Geez.

16 Morton 2 2 26 13.0 16 0 0
Defensively, redshirt freshman Grady Monroe put on a show for us, tallying 3 sacks.
And now for the verdict on Joseph Morton....well, in one of the most bizarre injuries you will ever see, Joseph Morton will be out 11 weeks with an appendectomy. Apparently it flared-up mid-handoff .

Wow, we were down, 14-0 and turned it around! Our redshirt freshman, Jake Kemp, won game MVP based on a 28 carry, 181 yard, 1 TD performance. He was completely shut down against West Virginia, so hopefully this will be more in line with what we can expect from the talented recruit. Dan Bush held his own this week, passing for a respectable 198 yards, with 2 TDs and 2 Int. Lester Monroe chipped in with half a sack, and Cris Matthews once again led the team with 10 tackles.

#30 Clemson (1-1) (-9) at Maryland (1-1)
Clemson leads the series, 2-0
Last Meeting, 2004, Clemson won, 49-10
Clemson runs the hell out of the ball and throws rarely. They've had 2 weeks off since their upset loss to #2 Tennessee (21-3). As usual, the rush defense is incredible, averaging giving up only 1.87 yards per carry. However, they've actually had a tough time against the pass, which may only be an aberration. Offensively, we can't really throw the ball since Morton's injury, so we really don't match up here well at all.
Ok, we lose, 37-10...but actually had the game tied mid-way through the 2nd quarter. Jake Kemp again performed admirably, gaining 108 yards on 20 carries, along with a 35 yard touchdown. Clouse (12 tackles, 2 assists, 1 int) and Matthews (10 tackles, 6 assists) led the charge on the defensive side of the ball.

Well...our defense is improving. As is our M.O., we had 4 turnovers to their 1. This could have been a lot worse, but wasn't and I have to give credit to the defense for that. We HAVE to get Joseph Morton back in the lineup, though that is 7 weeks away :(.
Our redshirt freshman sensation Grady Monroe had 9 tackles and 2 sacks. He's now tied for 2nd in the ACC for sacks. Bryant McClinton holds the Maryland record with 7.5. Grady, barring injury, will easily surpass that.

Well...they shut us out for 59 minutes and 2 seconds, but redshirt junior Duane Atkins would not be denied and broke a run for a 74 yard TD. That closed the margin to 47. Damn, I was proud

We really need to improve this offense. They held us to 3 first downs and 94 total yards . Dan Bush just sucks - he went 4-16, 25 yards and 3 interceptions. We had ONE drive that lasted more than 3 plays. This was horrible.

LOL - you know, I never gave it much thought - until you mentioned it. We've gone 4-28 since I started, which is just AWFUL. But, I really think we're starting to get some good players into the fold. I'm hoping they give me 5 years - I think we'll be .500 by then. Hope I last that long!

Way to stay positive. It seems like taking over a poor team in a very good conference might be the toughest task in TCY. I enjoy reading any TCY dynasty and this one is no different.

I'd be worried about your job security too. :)
I'm surprised you aren't going after a good QB in recruiting especially after having to use a poor backup this season. I don't remember what your offensive coordinator's congeniality is though, I'd guess I'd go after a guy with a good rating there before trying for the QB.
Good read though, its kinda nice seeing a top team like Maryland struggle and watching the herculean efforts you'll have to go to to build them up again.

Good point, Thomkal. One of the reasons I'm not all over a new quarterback is last year's recruit and this year's redshirt Thurman Weathers. He was nowhere near ready to play this season, but he could be an absolute stud. Of course, this could all be moot if I get fired after this season.
Hey, what the hell does my AD want?! 5 victories?! I gave him 4! :)

Ok...game 10 of our illustrious 3rd season. We're suffering through a year where our redshirt freshman quarterback was injured in...oh, his 5th play of his first season. So, all year we've been starting a junior walk-on and he's turned in quite a heroic performance. Dan Bush has completed 38.5% of his passes for 1254 yards, 5 TD ands a whopping 27 interceptions. Hollywood this ain't. Anyway, our redshirt freshman runningback, Jake Kemp is questionable for this game as well. Even so, I called our offensive coordinator into my office this week and told him, in no uncertain terms, Dan Bush will NOT lose this game for us this week. We will run the ball ad nauseum. If we carry the ball 50 times and gain 50 yards, I will be satisfied. However, I will no long hand the ball over to the opposition by having Dan Bush pass. Case closed.
And...on to the game...should be interesting...
Well...even though I hyped up the run percentage to an alltime high, we still managed to have Dan Bush throw 23 passes out of a total of 61 plays. And....no interceptions! It's the small victories like this that give us hope for the future. Unfortunately, the rest of the game we were destroyed :(.
Attendance: 59,700 (61,500).

And, in the inconsequential fact caregory, Grady Monroe notched another sack, tying him for the school record of 7.5. He only needs 19.5 in his last game to tie the ACC record of 27. :)
ACC Games
Clemson 24, Georgia Tech 7
North Carolina 26, Duke 16

With the victory, Clemson clinches their first ACC title. North Carolina comes in 2nd, and Duke places 3rd.
Next Week: at Syracuse (6-4) - welcome to 1-10'ville.

Joseph Morton is back...and he will be leading the charge despite the fact that he could rip open his 13 week old stitches. I don't care....I need a victory...or just somehow stay close :)
Holy moley, I just may have saved my job!
We run the ball, we pass the ball, we force 3 turnovers and DO NOT turn over the ball. All this equals UPSET!

Game MVP: MARY 76 J.B. Messenger
Maryland 14 0 3 13 - 30
Syracuse 0 3 0 7 - 10
It's funny, no one really had an outstanding game statistically. LT J.B. Messenger has 6 KRBS, but had 18 opportunities. Joseph Morton came back and did well (outstanding when you consider Dan Bush's output) - 21 for 38, 226 yards, 2 TDs. Jake Kemp ran for 87 yards on 24 carries with a TD. This bodes very well for next year, and I almost see us as a "sexy pick" to perhaps go .500 next year :). I hope I'm here to see it happen.

I have one more spot open, and I hope it's Omar. He's been taking his sweet ol' time making his decision.
I sit back and relax this week, basking in the glow of my upset victory the week before. Heck, maybe I'll even watch some of the championship football games...

Despite our victory in the last game of the season, we were somehow robbed and did not make the cut. :)
