I haven't been watching the game, but saw the article on ESPN.com:

On the Horn: WR makes call after TD catch (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1686454)

What will these jackasses come up with next?

I never knew he was on the list.

Some people here in New Orleans would say that he fell off that list when he allegedly banged Willie Roaf's wife.

I'm going to step in here and defend the showboaters again. I thought it was hilarious. As I always say, just because YOU don't like it (speaking of everyone who's so concerned with "class") doesn't mean that there's some horrible thing happening in the NFL.

Personally, I hope that the showboating happens a hundred times more often than it happens now. Maybe then the people who disagree with me will stop watching. Nyah.

Dola

My dream is to see a guy score a touchdown, run into the tunnel, and come back out onto the field in a decked-out Hummer, drive to midfield, and start doing donuts.

Edit: Preferably in another team's stadium.

Pumpy Tudos, I skimmed your post and thought you wanted to see him come out of the tunnel and make donuts at the 50 yard line. I was picturing a little krispy cream stand.

Actually, that's what defensive player should do after a drive-killing play like a sack. He could run over and give the donuts to the opposing coach.

I think that the NFL is concerned that things like this will get out of hand and turn the NFL into the "ME, ME, ME!" league that the NBA is now.

But I have no problem with normal endzone routines like dances.

I miss the endzone dances.:(

While I prefer my favorite players to act like they've been there before when they score, this kind of stuff doesn't bother me at all. Its just a game!

EDIT: It does annoy me when guys celebrate meaningless things... like making a sack when your team is trailing by three possessions, etc. TJ Duckett celebrating after scoring a TD while losing 31-0 is much worse than what Horn did IMO.

The shame is that Horn scored 4 TDs, and the phone thing is what will get the attention. (One could prolly argue successfully that he deserves that.) Apparently he told his Mom that he would call home if he scored a second TD, and sure enough...

Too bad TO already did something this outrageous on a national televised game. So this just looks stupid and not creative at all. Not saying TO wasn't stupid. but at least it was orignal then.

That's the beauty of TO's celebration's, they look spontaneous. Horn's just looked contrived and all-in-all pretty lame.

Besides, he PROMISED to call his Mama if he scored twice. He did, so he was just being a good guy and callin his Mama like he promised.

He shoulda called again after his fourth TD ;)

Did anyone catch Chad Johnson's first TD catch for Cincy? I thought it was great, he went towards the camera with a sign that said "Dear NFL, Please don't fine me for this again." or something close to that. I just didn't know where he got the sign, never saw on the replay. Someone must have been holding it for him.

I loved the performance, but only because he's on my fantasy team.

I thought Haslett reacted properly and said the right things, but this got me somewhat confused:

"It was the same thing in Atlanta," Haslett said. "He'll learn. He's only 32."

Say what? Since when did being in your early 30's give you license to do immature and classless things? I feel an "It's OK, I just ate at Subway" moment coming on, since I'm "only" 32 as well.

Not to mention the fact that being on the older side of 30 means he's not got many years left. Maybe after he retires he'll learn class when he's 48 or something.

I suspect that was a backhanded comment by Haslett.

BFD he pulled out a cell phone. It was weak at best humor wise.
Had he mooned the crowd with a big T and D on each cheek, then we're talking comic genius...

Man, you people take things way to seriously. I thought both Horn's and Johnson's TD celebrations were quite funny. I dont consider either of them to have less class for just having a little fun after scoring a Touchdown.

I agree. I laughed at loud when I saw Terrell pull the sharpie deal last year, but unfortunately missed this one. I found the idea pretty amusing though.

I also loved the Terrell Owens/Emmit Smith/George Teague episode from a few years back as well. I think creating real heated rivalries is good for the game.

Just to get everybody riled up, I'd like to see a receiver score a touchdown, reach under the goalpost, pull out a roll of $20's, and start handing them to every player in the other team's secondary.

I can't wait to see a linebacker or defensive back make his head ring louder than his cellphone. The worst part of the whole thing was that he couldn't even find the phone at first, he spent a few second searching for it, then walked away. Another teammate ran over and grabbed it and handed it to him. Poorly executed.

As for oykib's statement that he misses endzone dances, you really don't realise how lucky you are. Just watch a CFL game to see all the terribly contrived 'dances' the receivers do nowadays. The worst part is my Bombers are the worst offenders :(

Yeah, that kind of stuff is annoying as hell. Particularly since I had Indy's D on my fantasy team and was irked that they gave up a point. Then he did that. Plus, he added the "I can't hear you" ear move, to which I responded, yelling at the TV, "You can't hear the crowd because they all left at halftime after your team got blown out, you idiot!"

Yeah, especially if ESPN had that LB "Mic'ed up for sound". I would pay good money to see/hear that.

I don't love the showmanship, but I prefer to give the guys a little slack if he works his ass off in practice and shows a desire to win and not just attain personal glory.

Examples of this would be Deion Snaders and Terrell Owens. I always hated Deion until I heard that he actually busted his ass in practice and took the game seriously. Same goes for TO, although maybe my information is incorrect.

My favorite TO celebration was when he cried like a baby after catching a touchdown pass form Steve Young on the final play of the game to beat the Packers in the playoffs a few years ago. I like that sort of passion.

I think the fact that he really got his bell rung had a lot to do with it. That was one of the most impressive catches I've ever seen though.

Too bad they only won the game due to the botched call on the Jerry Rice fumble on that drive. Sours it a bit.

hehe.. one of ESPN Page 2's take on who Joe was calling:

Albert Connell: "Yeah, it's all clear, man. This celebration will keep everyone's attention for at least four or five more minutes, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting in the locker room. Deuce's locker is still in the same place, and I'm sure he didn't lock anything away before the game today. Just make sure and give me my cut this time."

Hey Mustang, you mean something like this from the NY Daily News

http://www.nydailynews.com/ips_rich_content/957-BACK_BIG.jpg

I didn't particularly like the celebration, but it was somewhat amusing. Also he did not (at least directly) taunt the opponents as TO did in Dallas which IMO is worse. He more than made up for it on his next TD, when he gave all the credit to Brooks who has taken a lot of heat (some deserved, much not) from the fans and media in New Orleans.

Sorry to threadjack, but speaking of taunting, it's people like TO and Horn who are causing legit celebrations to be flagged. In the Seattle game, Darrell Jackson caught a TD pass over the middle, one of the Rams hit him late, and then he actually turned his body away from the Ram and spiked the ball (his first chance to spike it considering he got hit late) and he was immediately flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. That was a BS call if I've ever seen one. He in no way spiked it at the guys feet, he actually turned about 45 degrees away from him and spiked it.

As in other areas of life, it's the absurd and over-the-top actions of a few that ruin typical actions for the rest of us.

Say what you will about Joe Horn's phone call, but I never heard his name mentioned along side TO and Randy Moss, in terms of stats and accomplishments, until today.

He just realized that he had to do something stupid in order for people to take notice and give him respect as a quality receiver.

Now how sad is that?

Anyone see the Sportcenter interview?

Horn: "Hey, they celebrate in EA's Madden and don't get fined for it."
Dan: "That's a video game, Joe."

and Irvin's cracking up in the background.
classic.

Personally I like a little celebration, but bringing the sharpie or the phone is over the top. (even though it is entertaining)

Let me hear an AMEN. When players go to the New Orleans Saints, they go to media blackout hell.

:(

If Joe Horn wants the attention, how many great WR outside of Marvin Harrison do you know that don't want it?

I'll bet you only need one hand to count them..

I'm mixed, I love to see Larry Fitzgerald just toss the ball to the ref, but I like to see the players get creative. Personally I liked the photo shoot the Saints did in the endzone after returning to blocked FG back more than the cell phone. :D

Lack of sportsmanship is one thing that causes me to act or "wish" irrationally. I bitched out a couple of my teammates on the field in softball this year after they attempted to turn a 4-6-3 double play in a game we were winning by 20+ in the last inning ... problem was there were no runners on base.

I didnt see this one yet...probably will sometime this morning. It sounds a little ridiculous (and look thats way too from the picture). I hate TO because he's a whiny ass bitch but really dont know too much about Horn...but he's got me interested. My favorite receiver in the league by far is Marvin Harrison. His quietness says something. When he makes a catch greater than most receivers ever will and hands the ball back to the ref like it was nothing, to me that makes him the biggest badass wide receiver ever.

I agree with you cody, but Horn thinks (as do most Saints fans) that New Orleans gets an unfair freezeout in the national media, even when they are good. Last year was a good example. They lit it up early, but still didn't get much love.

Of course his craving attention is a character flaw, but his buttons are getting pushed a bit too. Now people are going to know who he is, and by extension, the New Orleans Saints get a bit of an identity.

I'd much rather Deuce McCallister be the face of the Saints, but Horn would never sit still for it, so there you go.

All Saints fans are a little touchy about the national media.. it's like they *want* us to be bad. Witness the comments about Cincinatti.. there is a kind of excitement about how they are getting good that the Saints never got, even when they were really good.

Over the last four years the Saints haven't been great but they've shown flashes, and they've had a knack for beating the best teams (see Rams in last year of old NFC West, see Buccaneers today). So when the analysts want to talk about beating those teams (as they do when someone else plays them in a big game) do they ever mention how the Saints have handled them? NO! But just watch how Carolina gets mentioned whenever someone needs to beat Tampa Bay now.

Now you know the whole story! I'm getting a little steamed up now boy, don't make me get out my voodoo bag!

"They lit it up early" - so, you're saying you want the kind of attention the Miami Dolphins are getting now?

I seem to recall when the Saints were really good, for like a few years rather than 6-8 games, they got plenty of attention. Those damn "cha-ching" commercials were all over the national media 10+ years ago (Bobby Hebert's days, whenever that was).

Sidhe
12-16-2003, 09:16 AM
We didn't make up Cha-ching, we stole it from a commercial, so I think you got that backwards. IIRC, at that time, Hebert played for the Falcons.

I did not touch on the realities of our present performances, I only mentioned that Saints players and fans wish they'd get more attention, and that explains most of Horn's cellphone gambit.

Any part unexplained by this is covered by the reality that Joe Horn is an attention craving whore, like most great WRs.
