View Full Version : Volleyball text sim?

So, there I am, sitting in college and having the chance to create my own application and have it count as a subject.
Then, it makes me wonder, would volleyball qualify as an option for a sports text sim?
I mean, the sport itself has stat categories that say all there is about how good players play, which I think is a big pre.
Second, would people be interested to play?
With the last question, I bet knowing (or willingness to learn) the rules would have a big deal.
Anyway, I'll toss it in the group and am awaiting replies.
Note that I might want to use content of this thread for my application and for the later to be made report that is required to proove my skills and quality as programmer.

I created a volleyball pen and paper sim a while ago, but the rules were way too unwieldy, but if you want a look at em, let me know

Not a text sim, but I highly recommend picking up an X-Box and Dead or Alive Volleyball.
And maybe a box of kleenex.

Bah. the best game was for SNES, Super Volleyball or something similar.
Had two modes, a Realistic mode (like today), and a super "Volleyball 2020 mode"

Hmmmm.
Sounds intriguing, but how would it work?

I'm not sure about how funny it could be, at least in Europe, Volleyball is a "poor" sport where not alot of money is put on the game, so where would be the fun? you can't play with contracts etc as are almost inexistent. IT would be just a coach game, not a GM game. Of course i'm talking about the volleyball scene i know, the spanish one that is almost amateur even having a good world and olimpic games team.
I'm also thinking on sports for an online game that i would like to build, something like hattrick but not about soccer as the idea is already done. For american football it would be so hard to develop as there are tons of options just with the long roosters management, even hardder if you look at the big amount of tactics, stats etc.

Make a Dodge Ball sim.
The old NES game owned.
You could make up contract stuff.
OR DO THE UNTHINKABLE!

are you thinking college volleyball or beach volleyball? I don't follow either, but college volleyball sounds like it might be interesting, since we're familiar with the schools and it has recruiting, rankings, tournaments, national championships, etc. Not a bad idea.

Super Dodge Ball on the gameboy advance rocked. I actually have some code lying around from when I attempted making it into a text sim, adding in contracts and more player interaction/feedback. :)
One of the good things about going with a non-mainstream/traditional sport is you tend to have a little more leeway on how and what you implement in the game. Less likely to have people calling for you to be burned at the stake if you don't do something exactly as it is in real life.
Really looking forward to seeing how you do with this, MIJB, please keep us informed as to how it turns out. I'm a sucker when it comes to software/game development and the different practices and stories that go along with it.

As a huge volleyball fan a few ideas for this type of sim could be as follows...
Make it an international game where each country has a main league or two (USA's would be collegiate), and then have international tournaments. Not sure what these are off hand, but I think there is a World Championship, and there is also the Olympics. To make things interesting, you could have your athletes also compete in a beach tour which I'm pretty sure is fairly international - college players obviously can't play in this, but it's a game so they can if you want them to :)
It's also important to recognize that the game is pretty different in whether you pick men or women. Men's statistics will be a lot heavier in kills and errors, while the women will generally tally more digs because their rallies usually last longer.
If you have any questions on the rules let me know. There have been a number of new rules added fairly recently to USA Volleyball, I don't know how they stand internationally. I'm talking mainly about rally score (every play yields a point), playing to 30 instead of 15, and the inclusion of the libero position which effects the total number of subs given a team. Also things like lets are now playable and over hand passing off serve receive.
*edit*note i incorrectly said forehand passing off serve receive, it should be over hand passing - aka it looks like you're trying to set the ball.

I actually started this. I consider myself somewhere between beginner and intermediate with VB knowledge.. but I'm self-taught so I always end up getting stuck at some point.
I'd surely collaborate with someone on this.
Anyone interested, drop me a line at
