On my family's computer, the computer stopped reading discs recently. When I go into the device manager, I get this message for both "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)." I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling as well as looking for updated drivers (there are none) or rolling back the drivers (no previous configuration.) So far, when looking on-line, the best advice seems to be removing the upper and lower limits from the registry, but I have no clue about this, and really don't want to mess around with the registry if at all possible. Another part of the reason I don't want to try following this advice is that I'm presented with something like this (0000 44 00 56 00 44 00 2F 00 D.V.D./.) for 5 lines and 2 lines depending on whether I click the DVD/CD-ROM Drives or the CD Drive, and I have no clue how I would remove the upper and lower limits. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
How about checking the hardware, the socket might have come a little loose inside the computer. Also a bit of cleaning/vacuuming never hurts, just to eliminate that possibility.

I'll try that, but I think the problem is with the registry, because when I uninstall, then re-install, it gives me first a message saying "Found New Hardware: HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B" then "Found new hardware: CD-ROM Drive" and finally "A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware may not work properly." This seems to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that the computer is recognizing the drives are there just fine, but it's an error in the code that is preventing them from reading discs. Also, the fact that there are 2 and they both have the same problem. I'll defintely try that anyway.

Pre-bumping for the morning crowd, since I probably won't get on here until at least tomorrow afternoon.
