I was a DT. #62
Played 1 season semi-pro.
Mostly on special teams until my knee gave out.
Before that, I was awful... :D

I had a good combination of size and speed, but I had trouble holding onto the ball. I was better at defense.

TE/WR - OLB #2
Three year letterman in high school - we were 33-6 in those three years with one state championship.
All Region TE & DB -- (technically I was listed as a DB, but I played a "coverage OLB" role in our scheme)

I've never played gridiron, but I was thinking about signing up. I live in Australia, but we have a league that is apparently quite competitive, and the local team plays 10 mins from my house. They have signs up asking for players. I'm 6'1 and pretty quick, with a medium build, so not sure what position I'd be thrown in to. OLB sounds like the kind of role I'd enjoy playing.
My main sport was basketball. I played SG for my high school team, finishing 3rd in the state one season. I never took many shots out side of 15 feet, but I could get to the hoop, and took great pride in my D.

DE/OT
Was about the same on both sides of the ball. As a good OL does, I held on every single play. I don't remember ever getting a flag for it either. :)
I was a decent player, but being the geek I was I spent my after school time reading up on programming and playing Wolf3D and DOOM instead of being in the weight room.

Starting LT, despite my very small stature. 5'10, about 190. I had lost a lot of weight the preceding two years, and got a well earned starting spot my senior season. I let up 1 sack all season. I really couldn't have played if my technique wasn't excellent, and if I didn't know all the o-line assignments inside and out. I would frequently have to tell other guys their assignments in the huddle after the play was called.
For the pure fun factor, I found JV the previous 2 years a lot more fun. I also played DT those two seasons. My senior year though, I was one of only 2 guys who didn't play both ways... I just did not have the size or brute strength for DT.

Basketball: Center, Power Forward, Small Forward, and Shooting Guard. Most of the time I played in the post, but I also had a pretty decent outside shot. I played point guard for about ten minutes one game. It wasn't a pretty sight...
Baseball: Primarily second base, third base, and right field. I pitched one year and did pretty well, but it wasn't something that carried over when I moved up in age class.
Football: Never played ( :( ), but I bet I would have made a bad ass linebacker or tight end...

Free Safety/Corner... Our corners played zone in the flats, so I preferred FS... Then I could come up and make a hit.
I play cornerback/athlete, I played JV my freshman year moved up at the end of the season got some playing time. This year I would have to say I am very injury-prone as I got hurt early in the season but didnt know how serious it was till I went to the doctor. So anyway I'll go by my JV year and i think it would be safe to say that I was a baller (but everyone plays good in JV).

WR/CB
All-state wide reciever honorable mention
I also got all-state special teams player (i think 3 or 4 touchdowns on special teams, can't remember, I'll have to watch my highlight tape :) )
I also play baseball. Played 2nd base for all my years in high school, then going into college I had no shot(or so I thought then) at beating out the 2nd baseman, so I went into the first day of practice as a Centerfielder(never played it before), and ended up being our starting CF. Second year in progress right now.
Played basketball too, as a starter(2 years, I played my sophomore year, but we weren't so hot, prolly like 14-8 or something) we lost a total of 4 games, including playoffs. Never made it to state, we always found a way to lose on our way to state.

Oh, and BTW, if anyone ever wanted to see my getting faked out by a girl in basketball.... http://goosejuice.com/bball/Img_8196.jpg
It was during a lunchtime mixed league. The main annoyance was that guys weren't allowed to shoot inside the key, so on fast breaks you had to 'air jordan' your way from outside the key to lay it in.

With regards to high school/college football, I imagine it would be difficult to find the amount of players neccessary to have entirely seperate offensive and defensive units, so is it common that players would play for both?

I played 7 games in HS at DE and 3 at at OL (turned out for the first time as a senior, but broke my leg in a search and rescue a few weeks prior to the start of the season). I was selected as an all-state DE. In college I moved to Offensive Tackle.

no football for me unless you count pop warner where I blocked a punt without knowing it :) I drove the center straight back into the punter who drilled the kick into the center's back lol.
played midfield in lacrosse hs/college. got my 1 Division I goal on my 1st shot so TECHNICALLY I led the nation in shooting percantage... for a week :) We were #1 in the state my senior year of HS playing #2 West Genny, down 3 at the half since our goalie (who started 4 years at Georgetown) got his wrist broken before the half on a cheap shot. We woulda went all the way... :( Lost by 3 ended up with 3 total losses on the season including in the sectional semi's due to having our backup in and no O that game. Still had 2nd best record in school history tho.

CB/WR for the first 3 years, then I was moved to Nose Guard for my senior year. Could suck being a small defensive lineman in Western Wisconsin where you have to go against guys weighing around 300+ at times, but I got my shots in. :)
Played a post type position in intramural basketball, mainly being in the middle around the basket in our 2-3 zone.

Was a striker in soccer - kind of a pesky player who'd get the garbage goals. I did develop a little bit more skill as I gained more experience, though.
In hockey, I was pretty unique - I'm really small (5-6, 145), but I played a Power Forward-esque game. I'd drive to the net hard, and clean up the scraps in front. I also was known to play as a puck-rushing defensemen sometimes. Kind of a weird contrast.
In basketball (I play a semi-serious weekly pickup game), I'm just a scrapper. I'm pretty good defensively, despite my size, and crash the boards alright. If I'm matched up with someone just a little bit bigger than me, I usually excel, since they don't really have any athletic ability. I can shut them down defensively (you might not notice it, but I'll always have a hand in their face or something), and will kill them on the glass. If I'm on a weak offensive player, I will just clean up on the boards much more than you'd imagine for someone my size. I need to work on my help-defense, though. Offensively, I'm a slasher more than a shooter, but most of my baskets will come on offensive putbacks and steal+layup combos. Occasionally I'll take a step in from the 3-point line and hit a 16-footer, but I'm very selective in shooting jumpers.

never played football in my young times, until I heard of a senior league starting up. That was three years ago.
I played the first two season of the league as a DE (#70), until I hurt my knee and decided I was getting too old for football :) I wasn't very, very good, but I was learning little things at every practice and I practiced twice a week in front of the best/biggest offensive line in our league, our team's... Kinda sad I didn't get to play a third season since in my last few practices before my injury, I had the feeling I was getting a good hang of it and was putting in some nice moves on some of the slower OTs in the league :)
Nobody forced me to stop but I had way too much stuff to take care of, including a house, a family and all that comes with it, and couldn't afford to be on crutches for a few months because of a hobby...

Very skinny kid in HS, and never played organized football until intramural flag in college, where I was 2-year starting QB for intramural team. We were champs my Junior year, and runners-up my Senior year.
Basketball: PG/SG, 3-year letterman
Track: high jump (ergo--"SkyDog"), 2-year letterman
Football: announcer, 3-year letterman (yeah, for announcing  )
(I also ran cross country 2 years, because new b-ball coach came my Jr. year and basically forced all ball players to do a fall sport to keep in shape. We didn't have a cross country team before he came and started one just to run us in the fall. The highlight of my cross-country "career" was when we were soundly beaten in a meet by our arch-rival school--a team who we had destroyed in football and basketball in every season in recent memory. They were whoopin' it up after the meet like they'd just won the freakin' Super Bowl--after a CROSS COUNTRY MEET! Our team got together and starting chanting: "Get a life, get a clue, cross country only matters to fags like you!"
Our coach, while he reprimanded us publicly, told us later that he was actually proud of us for keeping the main thing the main thing. ;) )
Wonder which one of you played tightend in Green Bay? Or was the packer of tightends?

It was tough and at times I was pushed around, though I was usually strong enough. I was kind of out of position due to both my size and being faster than most of our defensive backs were. Playing defensive line can definitely be some fun though. :)

I played CB in high school. I was small and scrawny, so hitting wasn't my forte. However, i had a nose for the ball, and had 7 picks my senior year, 1 for an 89 yard TD. In FOF terms, i guess you could say i had a high intelligence rating, and pretty high in INT's and Play Diag., but punishing hitter would have been a 0. I also returned punts and had pretty good hands, but i was slow.
Reading this thread makes me want to get out my old Springsteen tape and play "Glory Days".

At most High Schools players play both ways, at my High School there were maybe 3 or 4 guys that didn't play both ways, not because there weren't enough people that went out, but because we weren't very deep:). Rarely do players play both ways in College

I'm currently a sophomore that plays football, basketball, and baseball at my high school. I am very small. I am 6'0" and weigh only 160 lbs. I am trying to put on some weight, but it has been tough.
I lettered in baseball last spring as a freshmen. I played OF, but this year I will most likely be making the move to 3rd base.
This fall I started every game for our football team. I started at CB and was the backup QB. I will be playing WR next year because we are losing 3 wideouts.
Currently I am starting on our varsity basketball team. I am averaging around 8 points and 6 rebounds. Not too bad, but I never shoot the ball. heh. If nothing goes wrong injury wise or other, I should earn 10 varsity letters.

The words to describe me as a ballplayer would be unathletic, smart, scrappy and dirty :)
Played CB for football...in 7th & 8th Grade, and was about 5th string, then quit for soccer in HS.
Played Forward/Outside Mid/GK for soccer. Finshed 2nd on the team in scoring my JR year, with the nickname "Trashman" because almost all my goals came off rebounds or loose balls in front of the net.
Played Wing/Defense for Hockey, mainly D later on.
Played Attack for lacrosse, easily my best sport.
We were #1 in the state my senior year of HS playing #2 West Genny, down 3 at the half since our goalie (who started 4 years at Georgetown) got his wrist broken before the half on a cheap shot. My HS was amazing a few years ago (had 11 players go to college off the '98 team that was undefeated and state champions, including 3 D1) and then had a few off years, including a 3 win season my junior year (partly because based on past success we were always scheduled against schools 2-3 times bigger than us) and then for senior year, we worked as hard as any team I've ever been a part of. Basically all the seniors and a solid amount of underclassmen would practice together 2-3 times a week from the end of my JR year until the beginning of the year. We stepped it up and in the state tournament it was us and Needham, and it was fairly obvious that the winner would win the state title. Then the fucking prom was the night the game was scheduled for, so they rescheduled the game for the next day. I did everything I could to convince the coaches to move the game, but they didn't and despite the best efforts of a few of the players, it was obvious as soon as we got in the locker room it was a losing battle. Anyway we ended up getting our asses handed to us 15-3, and Needham went on and won the state title. We may not have been able to beat them 100%, but walking off the field, it was easily the worst feeling I ever felt (other than family matters).

Played a lot of football/soccer and basketball in school, but I never had much talent for them (I am, however, qualified to referee in any under-18 basketball game in Europe, which is ... different). I showed some skill at rugby, but nobody ever bothered to explain the rules to me. It was like Forrest Gump, with 16-going-on 25 year olds chasing me down the field. It's amazing how fast you can run under those circumstances. The same principle applies in my senior football/football league, where I play RB, only it feels like I get to run into a brick wall at the end of it.

Football: Played both sides of the line in grade school. I wasn't that good, mainly second string, but my one claim to fame was an interception run back for a td.
Soccer: Keeper in high school; and a pretty darn good one too.Unfortunately, our team only had one player with any experience with soccer outside of high school (including myself), so we were not very good. Very few schools had soccer programs in the early 80s in SE Wisconsin.

Just finished up my forth year playing high school soccer usually played Defense for the high school team and foward/midfield/goalie in the spring for my club team. I'm pretty much known as the "enforcer" on the team and went out with the legacy of being thrown out of my last game but it was well worth it. Had some injury troubles in the Spring from track so I ended playing quite a bit of goalie, my strategy being pretty much anytime they're in the 18 run after them, dive on the ball and do an extra roll for good measure and perhaps knock them down. Although we only won 4 games my senior year, I take pride in the fact that we quadrupled our win total from the past two years combined and probably scored 5 times as many goals as the past two years combined. And there were definitly at least 4 or 5 other games we should have won. It doesn't help that 5 of the teams in our conference are state championship contenders every year but those are the breaks.
In the Winter/Fall I run track. Usually just the 800 but during track last year I picked up the 1600 and also run on the 4X400 relay team. It's a pretty awful triple to run during dual meets. Pretty much 1600, they do a hurdle race in between, run the 800, they do the 3200, and then the 4X400.

RB/CB - 5'10 155 in High School. I also ran a 4.59 40. Going into my senior season I was rated as one of the top DB's in the state. Blew my knee out 4 days before our first game of the year. Missed my Senior Season and lost scholarship offers to University of Memphis and University of Oregon.
CB for Juco - another knee injury forced me out my freshman season, moved back home got married.
Up till now, at the age of 29, I am playing in my second season of Semi Pro Ball at 5'10 200, as a SS/OLB here in Utah.
Baseaball I was a catcher for 13 years
Soccer (Indoor/Outdoor) I was a keeper.

Played RB until junior year of high school and then went to split end. Had a successful run.
Just one successful run? No wonder you didn't end up in the pros! :p

16 yard gain, man!

That's 17 yards more than my only run...
Actually, I only played football for 1 year in junior high, on defense - right defensive end and middle linebacker. Our team sucked so bad, our offense failed to score a single point the entire year. We moved into the area right after Labor Day, so I got a late start on practice, and when they asked me if I was fast or not, I didn't want to sound too cocky, so I told them I was middle of the pack. That, and my size, got me a spot on the DL. It wasn't until midway through the year, when we were running windsprints and I beat our running back, that they found out I could run.
I quit after one year because for the time and effort that goes into practicing and training for football, there's just not enough payoff in terms of playing time. It just wasn't worth it.

Baseball: Primarily third base; good defensive player, but Bob Euchre-esque numbers on offense

G/T/LB in football. Just to show how dumb HS coaches can be, I played those positions mainly because I was decent at them and I was white. All of our skill players were black, except the QB. I never understood this because I always won windsprints against receivers and RBs. Then I quit football to play basketball (where I played as a 3-4-5, mainly a 3 or 4) and then got into track.
At first in track I had the same problem as football. White guys run distance, black guys sprint. I am not being racist here, this is just how our coaches did it. Only by the luck of having serious lower leg problems did my coach realize I had some jets. My legs couldn't take the pounding of 40-50 miles a week of running, so I asked if I could try high jump because I could dunk a basketball at 5'11". Coach says sure, but let's start the workout with some sprints. So I ran a bunch of 60's against two of the fasted guys in the state and held my own. Coach decided to let me try hurdles, and I became the only white sprinter on our team. Hurdles and high jump became my primary events and the track coach told the football coach to never let me play football again because he didn't want me to get hurt.
I did finally play a little more football when I first joined the AF and played RB and TE for two years. Now the legs are shot and I play catch with my sons.

I was 5'8 180 (and very muscular back in the day) and I played Center on my HS team but split time with a bigger guy (he was 5'10 probably about 180 as well)
I also played Fullback for the soccer team where I was known as "The Wall" as a I was very good at slide tackles and taking guys with the ball down. I rarely was directly responsible for a goal scored against us and we went to the championship game my JR year (and lost unfortunately)

lmao.. look at your ass trying to block a girl! how dare you.. don't you know you let the girls shoot, since they'll miss anyways.
Since they'll miss anyways?? Man, you never played against my neighbor. She shot 96% from the charity stripe. In one game she set our H.S. scoring record by downing 81 points in a game. It was triple overtime. We won, 83-80. Yep, she scored 81 of 83 (another girl made a couple of free throws). And before you think she was a 6' monster among little girls...she was 5'1. Played on a 6-on-6 team, where if you dribble 3 times it was called travelling. She simply took a dribble or two to burn the defender, or came off a screen, and fired up a jump shot. 81 points. She didn't miss much.
As for me, played shooting guard and centerfield. My entire baseball career (I started for 2 seasons) I led the team in strikeouts, but was second in batting average--I grounded or flew out fewer than 10 times in nearly 200 at bats. If I hit it (which was rare), it was a short, line-drive single. Every single time. Though I did hit a double--once.

Ran Cross Country 2 years at a Div 5 powerhouse where as a Sophmore, we won a California state title. 7 guys had times of under 16:35
Played one year of baseball where I played center field
Played one year of Soccer where I was Left Mid
At Public HS, I ran Cross Country for a year where the school finished second to last. I also ran track my senior year where we won league and then had a few CIF individual titles. My school is a Top 5 HS for Pole Vaulting though

Never played football...when I was in 7th grade, the 8th grade coach tried to get me to come out to play QB, but my mom wouldn't let me play. I went out in 8th grade, but there was a new coach...and he thought I threw the ball too hard. So, due to my height (6'0" at the time, tallest on the team), and hands, they put me at TE, DE, and SS. I didn't know how to block, or tackle. The coach assumed we all knew how to do that.
The first game, I had a few catches for over 100 yards (one real long play); the second game, it was more of the same thing. The coaches decided, from then on there, to use me mainly as a decoy. That was fun. Add in that I was afraid to hit (I didn't know how to hit effectively), and I didn't play a lot. I *did* have a touchdown in the final game...but never played organized again.
The nice thing about that experience was that the basketball coach for the school (parish team) saw my helmet above everyone else's, and asked me to play. It was my first year of organized basketball, and it was excellent. So, I played basketball and baseball (played baseball since I was 3)...throughout high school.
I did play flag football for intramurals in college...was a wide receiver. Best play I ever had was on a 3rd-and-20 deep on our end with 20 seconds left, and we were down by six. Our QB was about to get sacked, and threw it up down the sideline...I was covered, but I made the adjustment, and the catch. I eluded my defender, then cut it across the field...eluded three other defenders, and outran the last guy to the end zone, tying it as time ran out. We lost it in OT due to a CB we named "Toast"...but it's still my football highlight.
Basketball: Went from C to SG in HS for Trinity HS in Camp Hill, PA (when I was a junior, we went to the Eastern finals...I never played, due to 10 very talented seniors on the team...and I wasn't quite good then...not that I am now); was asked to play at a D-II school in college, but I didn't go out. I played Intramurals...was my school's 3-point and FT champion, won the 3-on-3 championship, and went to the Final Four)
Baseball: Pitcher...played OF, 1B, 3B, and caught junior year when I wasn't pitching. It ruined my arm...ended up costing me college ball. I play sandlot/semipro now, although I haven't pitched in a couple of years. I'll be interested to see how my weight change (basically added 60 pounds since I last pitched regularly) will change things for me. Won a softball championship for Intramurals, and got to the finals two other times.

I only played 6yrs of football. 1 Jr. High, 4 High School, 1 College (DIII)
Our school was 2,000 or so students. Our football team had 100 or so guys on it, not counting the freshman team. Nobody played both ways. Most people didn't start until their Senior year.
Let me say this, you guys had some freaking SMALL offensive lines! 4 of our 5 were 250lbs+, and we sucked. One of 'em went DI full ride to a Big 10 school.
6'2", 180 in HS. played WR. Got 2nd team All-City for Cincinnati
My year in college was actually great fun. Wonderfull system, Zampese style. Everything was reads by the QB and WR, so that on every pass play, there would be a receiver open. I really liked it, but, it took a strong QB, which we didn't have.
DIII: 1 reception 6 yards, 1 fumble :(
I've been lifting a lot the past year, and I'm up to 210 now. I really miss playing :(

Ah. OK. I was just a couple miles away at Moeller.
So my new guess for the fun-n-gun offense is Hanover.
I played them once in a JV game when I was at Mt. St. Joseph. I was a DT, playing any team with that system is no fun for a DT.

Heh, Air Jordan. Funny, my best friend who happens to be the best pure shooter I know, whenever he is doing a move and pops up for a jumper, he kicks his legs out into the Jordan (spread apart like the logo) and buries it. So funny. If he misses a shot I will tell him he isn't kicking his legs far enough out.. hehe.

I played 3rd base in little league baseball. I could not hit the ball. I don't know if I wasn't paying attention when the coaches said to "keep your eye on the ball" but I coldn't make contact. But I was tall and looked athletic, so they moved me up! an age group. Needless to say i had trouble making contact with the older kids too. The experience left me a little shell shocked as far as baseball goes. My mom once offered me one dollar for every time I swung the bat.
man that sucked, never played baseball again.

High School Football:
Let's See this will be a long list:
Offense:
TB - Freshman
TE - Sophomore/Junior
WR - Senior
(One practice my senior year at G, several at FB as well. The G practice was a day where I couldn't catch the ball and was told "Vibert, if you drop another pass you move to guard". I dropped the next one intentionally (I hated playing WR). The next day unfortunately when I tried to get my new uniform number... they sent me back out to WR)
Defense:
CB - Fresh, Soph, Jr, Sr.
S - Soph, Sr
OLB - Sr
DE - Fresh
DT - Sr
Freshmen year due to injury I played a game at DE, I loved every second of it. My senior year I started the year as a CB, went to SS after the first scrimmage, our SS rolled up to OLB when we moved to a 4-4. However by the end of the season a lot of injuries forced me to play some scout team Defense one day. I couldn't get the stupid JV kid to move from my SS position and the empty spot was DT. I had one of the greatest practices of my life that day at DT. The coaches swore I was cheating because I knew our offense too well, so finally after I blew up another play (sweep I just followed the pulling guard and being faster then most DTs caught the play from behind) they circled the team around myself and our starting T (who was also an All State DE (the next year he set the state record for sacks)) and we lined up 1 on 1 3 times, with me winning all three. The next day was a defensive practice and when I ran out with the D-Backs, was told I was now a Defensive Tackle.
That's how I became the smallest Defensive Tackle in the state that year at 6-3 and 145 lbs. It was pretty easy though, I was faster then most linemen, and the basic techniques for getting off of a block were very similar to those to get off of bump and run coverage.
Special Teams:
PK - Junior/Senior
P - Senior
Kickoff Coverage/Return as well.
After High School I coached for 4 years while I was at College. In those 4 years we went to 3 state finals, winning once. I coached mostly at the Freshmen and JV level, while helping out with the Varsity Kickers.
Rugby:
I played rugby (no football at my college), playing on the wing (all spots from 10-14), as a flanker, also matches at 8-Man, and scrum half. My primary position though was fullback.
I played very briefly for the Potomac Athletic Club's rugby team, before, my back, knees, and a general lack of time forced me to stop after about 2 or 3 weeks.

And my alma mater will pound every team they play this year with the exception of their 12 point loss to the #1 team in the nation. They were the only team to get within 18 points of Oak Hill Academy from VA.
