Has anyone tried putting together a team of just great defenders? I want to try this out, but I'm wondering if anyone else has tried it and what types of results they got?
Here is what I plan on doing....
-Sign the best most expenisive defensive players in free agency.
-Offensivley I won't sign anyone except undrafted rookies.
After I've done a couple seasons I will post the results.

I have done this...sort of. I didn't only sign terrible offensive players, but I limited myself to second tier players.
I did well for a season or two. I think I won a couple of super bowls.

I just got finished with my tryout season. It was hard to sign all the free agents I wanted. I had plenty of money to spend so I offered way over asking price to ensure their signing. After the first week three of them signed elsewhere for quite a bit less. Anyway, I still managed to sign 7 players rated 60 or better. I didn't bother singing positions where I was allready strong, so in the end I had a full defense of 60+ players.
Anyway, we went 11-5 in the regular season earning the wild card spot. From there we beat three teams in a row on the road to earn a Super Bowl berth. Eventually we beat the Jags 21-16 to become champions.
Interesting Stats
Averaged 21.2 points per game
Allowed 18.6 points per game. (A little higher than I expected)
Forced 32 turnovers for a +7 ratio
3rd in run defense
7th in pass D (A little surprising since everyone in my secondary rated obove 70)
Offensively
98.8 rushing yards per game
214.8 passing yards per game.

I drafted from the start...Picked the best defenders available....Im a bit weak at DE, but other than that Im stacked...Offense is pretty weak.

This inspired me too do the opposite. I drafted 24 or so rounds of nothing but great offensive players. The i let the scout finish the rest, knowing id get all scrub defensive players. I ended up with the an amazing offense. Best young QB, RB, 2 WR, TE, FB and id say an middle of the road OL.
I turned off injuries for managability sake.
First year was pretty rough, ended up 6-10. My stud Qb had a pretty rough year due to the substandard OL (didnt draft OL till pretty late.) and ended up getting sacked 56 times. Same goes for my super RB. The defense was HORRENDOUS. Last place in just about every category. (Ill upload a FOF Reporter Output soon btw).
Next year.... drafted 4th, took a G. Took nothing but offense. Thankfully, since i didnt draft any defense till the late 20's of the dispersal draft all my defense was on 1 year contracts. I didnt really have to make many FA acquisitions, but i did upgrade the OL substantially. Now onto the defense, nothing but undrafted rookies from the free agent pool. Noones rated higher than 30 potential.
Start year 2, lose the first 2, then go on to win 14 straight. Most are blowouts, like 45-20 and such, with just a few squeekers. We end up giving up the most points, but we score 480, by far the most in the league, +100 atleast. My QB finally got the help he needed and has an end of year QBR of 111.6 - 36 tds and 4 picks. We have a first round bye, then win the next matchup. We finally lose to GB 41-35 in the conference title.
Cool experiment. I think ill continue with this a few more seasons. Ill post my FOF Reporter results shortly.
I have to say, its a tad disappointing knowing you can kick ass this way. I know alot of NFL teams are labled as one dimensional (balt, kc etc) but in this case i think its a bit more extreme. I dont think this 'all offense' team should have gone this far. The defense was just too horrible, most of these players are around a rating of 10-25. All undrafted rookies. Ah well.

Those are both interesting experiments. That is a little bit surprising that a pure offense would work so well...

28th in Pass Yards Per Attempt
31st in 3rd down conversions
16th in Points allowed (20.7)
Offense
-----------
5th in run offense (139.5 ypg)
7th in pass offense (242.8 ypg)

I wish FOF Reporter could output the player ratings, but im sure thats a messy situation with scouts and all.
I cant believe the all scrub defense could get this far. I mean these guys are _really_ piss poor. The barely have any ratings whatsoever. This is no way a 'Rams' situation. The Rams have a above-average to good defense. The Rams D this year was statistically greater than Carolina. This defense in the world of FOF is the NFL equivilant too Arizona's 4th string practice squad defense.
