View Full Version : All-Time Baseball Draft/Auction

With the football draft now in progress, I started thinking a baseball one would probably be easier to fill out a whole roster and, at least personally, I know baseball history better than football history even though I like football more.

There are 2 possible ways to do this. One is by auction, as WSUCougar did for baseball. I would shamelessly rip off his rules and then ask him for any pointers or issues he had with the NFL Challenge. http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums/showthread.php?t=11361&highlight=all-time+nfl If this is chosen, I would also add a rule where every team's bidding (winning or losing) is publicized at the end of each round, because I want to run a team and if I kept this private I might have some small advantage.

The other possible way is by snake draft, as pskov is currently running. http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums/showthread.php?t=20182

I am willing to run either one, with each team eventually choosing 26 people (1 Manager, 25 man roster, with no other limitations or guidelines.) What I am looking for is your input on which way to do it. So when expressing your interest, indicate which one you would rather do, if it matters. I think auction would take less time, but it is up to you. Also, amount of people is another question. I'm leaning towards 8-12 teams, but if a significant number of people want to participate, I could increase to 16. Also, I think more than 10 teams would have to be auction due to the time issue.

POST HERE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED and with any preferences on style/number of participants.

I'd be interested..... I'd lean in favor of a snake draft with 24 hours between picks (sans the weekend). I think 10-12 teams would work best.

I'd be interested too :) Either way works for me...since I'm already involved in the Football draft, I'd like to try the auction method if that's possible.

Also, if this has overwhelming demand for slots, I'd abandon my slot in favor of someone who isn't involved in either.

I think the snake draft is a much more interesting way to do things. I'd also be interested, btw :D.

I would be interested in this. I did the football one with WSUCougar (finished in second actually), but I didn't feel like joining the recent one. Baseball would be a nice change, I think.

I'm down. Auction would probably be better. But I'm with it for either.

I would enjoy doing something like this.

I would also be interested, preferably in the snake method as I think it would take less time.

I would be interested, I'd prefer the snake draft but either way works for me.

I'd be interested as well. Snake draft sounds good to me.

I'd be interested in this. My strength is more in baseball, so perhaps I'd have a better showing here than in the football one. I'd like to sign up, if possible.

Count me in. Anyway you decide to run it is fine by me.

I'm interested. Shouldn't I get a first round bye for winning the NFL Challenge? :) :)

Me too.

Either way is fine.

Up until now there are 15 entrants. Anyone who enters before noon Sunday will be considered (I'll extend it to the first time I log in after noon Sunday, which may even be after the Pats game.) If there are too many entries, I'll do a random picking of the people who want to enter. If we're doing it WSUCougar auction-style, there will be no need to cut it down, but for a snake-draft I'll probably cap it at 14.

Right now snake draft has a 5-3 advantage in posts. But with this many people, I'll guarantee an auction will take less time (remember, this is not a straight auction, where someone throws out a name and people bid on him, but one where everyone bids in a hidden auction on all 26 spots at once, so it should only take 3-4 rounds at most) and since I'd rather not leave people out, I think I'm leaning towards choosing auction-style.

I'd be interested...and I'll vote auction so I can do it.

I'd be up for it. Auction would be a tad more interesting, I think, though either way works fine.

Man, an auction sounds much better. We could actually finish it in some reasonable amount of time. They had just started the second round in the football thread the last time I checked.

Also, we could have more participants. The problem with having fewer participants in baseball is that the teams will have no weaknesses. You'd wind up with Hoyt Wilhelm as your last middle reliever if we only had ten or twelve teams. It'd be like those crappy fantasy leagues with five or six teams.

Dola--

I'm getting excited about this. Maybe I'm just sublimating. My brother just went back home after staying out here with me, in my tiny Japanese apartment, for two and a half weeks. My no girl meter is hitting the redline (too much info meter is screaming red also).

Sounds interesting. I'd like to join in the fun. No preferences, just explain the rules to me real slow when we get that far. :)

Up to 18 entrants now. We are going WSUCougar auction-style, so I'll accept the first 30.

Preliminary Rules

1. The 30 challengers submit blind bids to me via PM. I will then post the current rosters for each challenger; the challenger with the highest bid on a player gains the rights to that player. Players are not up for re-bid, and in the event of a tie the player goes back in the pool. However, there will obviously be holes in challenger’s lineups (as others bid higher), so this process of blind bidding will continue until every roster is filled. Please submit them in alphabetical order. These bids will be made public after every round.

2. 1 Manager and 25 players on your roster. For line-ups, no DH will be fielded. I recommend having at least 5 or 6 pitchers, but it's up to you. Any person is eligible to be chosen, so if you want to choose someone from the Japanese or Negro Leagues or even your local HS, feel free, but remember these are being voted on by members of FOFC.

3. You have 1000 points to bid. You must submit a bid of at least 1 on every player.

4. I will post 5 groups of 6 teams, based on when you PM"ed me. The forum as a whole will vote (publicly) on which is the best in each group, and the 5 finalists will advance to another poll. I don't think there are many here who will vote for or against a certain team because the user, so each owner will have the chance to submit a post about their team to sway the voters. The voters will choose based on whatever criteria they choose, so if you choose 1-year wonders or solid 12+ year big leaguers, explain that in your post. Also, you are allowed to vote for yourself, but it will be public, so if you have 1 vote for your team and it is you, we will point and laugh.

5. Deadline for ROUND 1 will be the first time I log in after 11:59 PM EST Tuesday. Please don't submit your rosters before Sunday afternoon, so any issues with the rules can be addressed. At that point, I will post a new thread, with the rules and owners in Post 1.

I'm not sure if that covers all the bases, so any questions?

So just to be clear: there's no rules as far as whether we're taking the player in his best season, for his whole career, at his peak only, etc? That's up for interpretation by the voters?

ISiddiqui
01-18-2004, 01:04 PM
Oh, a question.. There is a minimum amount of points we can put on one player (1), is there a max, or is it just what you really want to pay for the guy? :D

Sorry, new thread will be posted within minutes, along with an extension to Wednesday at 11:59. As for the questions, it is strictly up to the voters, with you making your case. The maximum is I guess, 975 points for 1 player.

Does the auction lose anything if picks are not kept secret until the end?

BishopMVP
01-19-2004, 05:04 PM
I don't think so. It will just let you know who other people were bidding for. The only reason I'm doing it is because I want to remove any chance of getting an advantage.
