View Full Version : FOF 2004 - 5.0c coming, question about html

From another thread, we found this little gem:

I am intending to get to work on 5.0c very soon now. Should I even bother with html given Fido's utility? He's got some features in there that are pretty nice - much more time consuming than I was anticipating.

I thought this question was worth making a little more obvious. For those of you/us who care about this issue (especially those who have used Fido's utility) what say you? Should this be a priority for in-game addition, or shoudl Jim spend his time elsewhere?

elsewhere - Fido's is outstanding and he put in a huge amount of time. The only concern I would have is if Jim makes one, it might work with future versions, and Fido might go off and join the Peace Corps and leave us high and dry, leaving us only with a FOF2K4 version of an html utility.

I think Jim making this comment is the best compliment Fido could receive from the Boss ;) I think it says a lot about what Fido has accomplished with his utility.

My reply from the other thread:

What I would like to see would be a focus on bugs fixes, tweaks, and game improvements (being able to save when partway through a depth chart tweak in MP would be my #1 right now). Once that is completed to Jim's satisfaction, I would like to see either Jim develop an HTML utility, or to collaborate with fido to a) enhance fido's extisting utlility, or b) officially incorporate fido's utility into FOF2k4. My preference would be a collaboration since it would reduce the amount of time Jim works on it and allow him to go back to Front Office Baseball, or to fire up development on TCY2.

I think that in light of Fido's utility, html output should NOT be a patch priority at all.

I vote for the new patch without HTML support since Fido's works great, then the "new project" :)

I don't think an in game HTML output would be necessary since I use Fido's utility. The only problem is that not all of Jim's customers know about FOF Reporter or even know about this forum (I didn't until last November). A lot of people will miss out on HTML if Jim isn’t the one developing it.

Jim could probably link a copy of Fido's utility on his website for people that don't know about it or this forum.

Fido's is good enought and he keeps improving it, why to do the same work twice? Mybe Jim can give some game info to Fido to make it even better.
It shouldn't be a priority for Jim. He could link to it from the Solecismic website as "official" addon.

Wow, some kind words for you Fido. That's cool.

I think the big concern for me would be to see MP tightened up. But I'm not sure how much play that will get seeing as a majority of folks are soloists. But unless there is a big addition with HTML exporting over Fido's utility, I say let it ride. Just my humble opinion.

I could care less about HTML output myself. My largest concerns are the following:

1. The AI needs help resigning it's own players. When entering the FA period AI teams have only 12-15 players under contract. This kills any sense of league continuity.

2. Some way for non mico-managers to keep a player that has spent 33 weeks recovering from an ACL injury (with 3 more to go until fully healthy) out of the lineup. The AI will stick him back in as soon as he's questionable, and surprise, he'll tear his ACL and be out for 33 more weeks. I believe we discussed something like a "inactive this player X weeks" option in another thread. Don't know if that's feasible though...

3. The AI's preference for the 3-4 defense. In one of my recent careers I had a set of stud former round 1 DT's and the AI opts to start an undrafted scrub in the 3-4. Needless to say, it ruined the season.

4. Making the "lock depth chart" feature work as people thought it would (again, see the other recent thread on this).

5. Still to many 4,000 yard passers, even with injuries at 200.

without HTML :)

Definitely without HTML as Fido's utility really does a great job of filling that need. As I posted in my other thread, I hope Jim will make it possible for us to watch a league develop for a period of time even after we are fired. Also, it would be great if a "bad" team would hire you again after a year or more out of the league.

I'll add my voice to those saying that Jim should spend his time somewhere besides HTML. Fido's utility is great.

1)Spend the time on the minor bugs that haven't been squashed.
2)Improve the AI, particularly with regard to non-human teams roster mgmt
3)Get to work on the next project, be it TCY2 or Front Office Baseball or whatever.

HTML? I don't believe I could care less.

I definitely agree that HTML output shouldn't be a priority. I think there are a lot of minor bugs and tweaks (our whole thread on this a while back brought a lot of them up) that should be addressed first.

I'll add another vote to the "don't bother" camp, but with one large request. Jim, please make the transaction and injury lists printable and/or make it easy for Fido or someone else to extract that information to add to the reporter.

I think Fido's does a great job right now. If I was in Fido's place, I would be very proud of what I accomplished. It's so good that Jim himself considers it better than what he would do...

However, it might be interesting to have Fido's feedback on this subject. He has said in the past that he was writing his utilities as a hobby and did not always have the time to improve / support / extand them... So however good Fido's Reporter is, maybe an official tool from Solecismic, with all the support associated with it, might be better in the long run...

What about bundling Fido's utility with future releases of FOF, with some kind of explanation that it is third party software and here's where to go to get support?

That way it's pretty much an integral part of the game (in people's minds, because it isn't a separate download) without Jim having to divert time to it

I somehow missed this thread the first time around, but I have to agree with that 100%. I'm kinda in shock. Might even have to get off ly lazy arse and finish the thing :)

Mybe Jim can give some game info to Fido to make it even better.
Jim and I discussed that at length back in the TCY helper days. He is against doing this because he has had bad experiences in the past. I totally understand, and do not expect him to share the inoformation anytime soon.

These are just a hobby, despite the fact that I have made some omey off of this one, its still pretty much a spare time gig, and based on what holds my interest. Its fighting for my spare time right now even (between wanting to get in volved in the poker server development and playing NWN: HotU). This will most likely boost it up some.

Not a good idea on his part. As a software company, you never want to include a third party utility with your own work, simply because it cannot be made clear enough that this is a third party utility and not your own work. He would undoubtedly get suport requests for it, and if its a bad build, it will lessen people's impressions of his game.

From a MP perspective, the in-season FA bug should be the #1 priority.

Does Fido charge for his HTML generator? If not, he should...then maybe that will ensure continued support from his end...

I still have a problem using it because of the Fargo__ND).....there still isnt a way to parse those pherenthesis out of there so its only part way complete for use in the USFL. I may not be that great at moving tags around and am leary about hitting delete on one, to replace a header with a custom one, so everytime i have to see SAMPLE ...... That kinda stinks but On the other hand if Fido could give me a hand getting rid of those () stuff i would say 100% i support Jim's concentrating FIRST on the MP stuff. THE FA signing to the team with the lowest ID # first is horrible...that gets a big "please!!!!!!" to jim, im on my knees on that one.

Does Fido charge for his HTML generator? If not, he should...then maybe that will ensure continued support from his end...Charging for software brings up the whole liability/support issue, so I don't. I do however provide special support/early release to those who have contributed to the cause. and actually clicked on the Donationware (http://fidosoft.com/FOF/donationware.htm) link on my site). I added that in when I moved to the new sites and have received more response to it than I had expected.

As for the continued support, thiat is based on my mood. I just haven't been in the mood to work on it lately, mainly because I cannot come up with anything "killer" to warrant a new verision. The amount of time I spend working on it on the whole is governed by my enjoyment of what I am doing. To be honest, I still haven't really played FOF 2004. All of my FOF time has been spect working on the Reporter.

I still have a problem using it because of the Fargo__ND).....there still isnt a way to parse those pherenthesis out of there so its only part way complete for use in the USFL. As I have said in the past, this has been fixed and is included in the 1.8 build which will be avilable to the general public when I get a 1.9 out to the priority/favores/special users.

As a work around, you couold always just remove the (ND) from the city name.

I'm torn on this issue. I tried Fido's utility for the first time this weekend, and I agree that his work is very impressive.

I say this knowing I haven't paid a dime for the utility and understanding that it is the fruit of a hobby. There are a couple of frustrating things about the utility, which I fully accept given the nature of the utility. However, Fido's work has whet my appetite for a couple of things, most notable the detailed college draft history, which in my book is the coolest thing about the HTML utility.

I think relying on a third-party vendor for HTML support for what appears to be a limited audience for multiplayer leagues, I think that's fine. But incorporating a feature like the college draft history into the core game program, be it through HTML or some other means, would be a wonderful addition IMHO.

I think relying on a third-party vendor for HTML support for what appears to be a limited audience for multiplayer leagues, I think that's fine. Well, because of the way the information is stored and presented, I find myself using it for single-player--not only just for the draft history, but for the easy access to each season's league leaders.

Just wanted to bump this. I was going to go to Fido's site to contribute to his Donationware for his great utility. But, I don't think he has brought it up to the latest patch and the donationware link is bad.

Anyone know if he is going to update this? I loved this utility but have not used it for awhile because Fido seemed angry at most of us for some reason when we asked questions.

I highly doubt he would be updating it, since he never updated it to work with 5.0d..

Actually, he came in here and said he was working on it.

As for his attitude, I'd get sick pretty quick of new threads cropping up every day or two asking "so when's it going to work with 5.0d?" like was happening. Luckily that hasn't happened with my utilities yet.

Why? Isn't it flattering when people are excited about a new utility for FOF?

I just don't get it with people who design something for public consumption. "I made this utility for everyone to use, but if you ask too many questions, I'm not going to work on it anymore". ???

There is a huge difference between "I'd like to know x about y" and "is it out yet? is it out yet? is it out yet? is it out yet?" The same people were posting in multiple threads day after day. And frankly, if you work on something for free, you are entitled to do with it whatever you will, including stopping work on it for any reason you choose. If you don't like that, don't use the free utility.

Dead horse beat enough now, I think. I just hate to see people disparage Fido after all the work he did for us. I think he was entitled to get a bit grumpy at some of what went on.

Dead horse is right.

Edit: The work you utility writers do is appreciated and hopefully Fido can come back here and share his talent. I just didn't think all the fuss was warrented.

He did update it to work with 5.0d. He just didn't share it here, probably because of the way people were being jerks. I don't blame him one single bit. If I recall, people were PM'ing and e-mail him *demanding* that he makes this tweak or that update. The 5.0d update works partially for 5.1. It crashes after a time, but it comes close to finishing everything. Check it out: http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/showpost.php?p=640448&postcount=164

CORRECTION:

The 5.0d update DOES work with 5.1 on my desktop, as long as game logs (with the new info) aren't used. I forgot that I was having problems on the laptop all along with FOF Reporter. At any rate, I'll be transferring my dynasty league to the desktop, running the reporter, and uploading in a few minutes. Sah-weet!!!!!

Once I imported the long-term 5.1a league with history from my laptop, I started getting errors again. I have some HTML, which I'll be copying and pasting as needed, but it is not complete.

I was never able to get the reporter to run on my laptop. Just trying to tell it where the files were caused it to crash. After that experience, I never tried to run it on a desktop.
