For those who enjoy heavy metal and history (I know that's just about everybody), I'd like to recommend the new Iced Earth CD, The Glorious Burden. The limited edition release features 2 discs, the first detailing a few of US-related historical events (Declaration of Independence, 9/11, Valley Forge), along with songs about the Red Baron, Attila the Hun, and Waterloo, to name a few. The second disc is a 3-song epic about the Battle of Gettysburg, including very detailed lyrics about strategy and specific historical figures.
The music is essentially straight-up 80's thrash/metal, even though the majority of the band's released have come since 1990. This album is the first with former Judas Priest vocalist Tim Owens. This is the band's (really, just one guy, Jon Shaffer) first foray into historical lyrical content, although he usually takes on themes for his albums - Dark Saga is based on the comic book Spawn, Horror Show is an album about classic horror film characters, and Burnt Offerings contains the epic Dante's Inferno. Not for everyone, and certainly, if you're one who still laughs at old Iron Maiden videos and such, you should stay far, far away from this. But the historical bent has even made some news:
