After reading the best of 2003 in the latest Golf Digest, I'm really leaning towards the Nike Slingshot irons as I need some new ones for this year.

Does anyone here have these? or have tried them out? I'm hoping to find somewhere to demo them. I'm about (-8 to -12) handicap and from what I've read, that's who should use these.

I also like the 2 ball putter they talk about.

I'd be interested in hearing how the Slingshot Irons are as well. A friend of mine had a Nike Driver and had a hell of a time hitting the ball with any consistency with it. He ended up trading it for a pretty nice Calloway thats worked great for him. I've been afraid to try a Nike club after seeing how poorly he hit the ball with it.

The Slingshot offends my sensibilities, but the word is that they do something good.

Really, just about any store will have them in stock that you can hit (at least into a net).

What have you played before? What is your shot pattern? (i.e., hook, draw, fade, or slice; how far do you hit 7 iron; where do you usually miss)?

I would recommend that whatever you buy, you make sure to have them custom-fit (for length and lie angle). That can make even more of a difference than any new technology.

I usually play around a 6-7, fwiw.

The 2ball putter is intriguing to me. I might look into it.

I'm using some Ram Golf clubs right now, I just haven't made any strides in the 3 years of using them. I've stayed about the same handicap. I want something new and I really like the 'feel' of the slingshot - although I have yet to really hit some balls with a set.

I've heard the Nike drivers aren't that good, in fact I think the Calloway won the award in the magazine.

I usually hit a draw shot, although anything could happen. :) Not sure how far I hit my 7 iron as I don't use it that often. My problem is getting consistancy out of my irons, but I do hit them pretty well. I'm not really in NEED of a new set, I just saw them at a Golf Discount a few months ago and really liked how they fit my hands, if that matters? .. and after reading about them again, they seem perfect for my style.

I have an Odyessy putter now and the 2-ball putter looks to be a step above mine as far as results go for people who 3 putt all the time. :)

Here's a snipped on the 2 ball putter. This one's mine this spring.

The 2-Ball Putter has a distinctive alignment system behind the sweet spot which is exceptionally effective in helping golfers see exactly where they are aiming. Research shows that up to 67 percent of golfers have trouble lining up putts, damaging their accuracy and confidence on the greens. The Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball putter helps correct these errors.

The human eye has an easy time aligning shapes that are similar in size, shape and color. Because the two alignment discs on the putter are similar in diameter and shape to a golf ball, visualizing the path of both the ball and the putter become a natural step while addressing the ball. Yes, it really works!

The large, face-balanced mallet design of Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball Putter also helps keep the putter on line during the stroke, just in case your nerves try to overpower your eyes. You can also rely on the consistent performance and super feel of the patented White Hot insert. It is made of resilient urethane to give you a soft feel at impact with consistent distance control.

• Two circular alignment discs in the top of the putterhead are similar in size to a golf ball.

• Makes face-ball-target alignment simple at address, promoting an ideal stroke path, resulting in more on-target putts

If you like how they fit your hands, then that's probably a better reason than anything else.

I've been playing Cleveland TA3s for about five years now. And, like you, I've sort of stalled out in my progress -- I'm planning on buying a set of TA5s next month, just to have something new to look at. They're a little more forgiving and all, but mostly it's just to have new toys to play with.

I'm also looking at a new putter. I've had a Cleveland Classics blade putter for about the same time, and I've been thinking of going to something in a mallet, or just something different.

What brand of Rams? The FX?

MizzouRah

Yes, the FX. Definitly better than my Wilson's I had before those, but I hate the drivers, which is maybe what I should be focusing on... but the slingshot irons are calling my name. :)

What kind of drivers do you use?

Go somewhere and test out that 2-ball putter.

I've got a Taylor Made 300 driver (9 degrees loft) that I like pretty well. It's a generation old now (replaced by the 540 series drivers), but I tend to be a little behind the technology curve.

Before that I played a Taylor Made System 2. I find that, for my swing characteristics (I usually play a draw, and tend to hit the ball on the hosel side of center), Taylor Made feels the best.

I'll try some Taylor Made drivers when I get to Golf Discount. I'm open to anything that gives me an accurate decent distance shot.

Let me know how it works out.

I'm (obviously) a huge dork when it comes to talking about golf.

Can't wait for spring!!

No doubt!

I've gotta say, though -- I like winter as a forced break from golf. It gets me all hyped up for a new season...

I would love to, I just don't have the time right now. (Although it may seem that way ;))

I would really like to plan a central location golf outing with some FOFC golfers this summer. Maybe a 2 day trip.

We'll stick this one in the back of our minds and wait for summer. :)

bump.

Yesterday I was "forced" to buy a new putter, because I forgot to pack it before driving to the course, and the pro-shop didn't have any loaners. All the more reason to buy one, right?

Anyways, I bought the Nike OZ Mallet (http://www.nikegolf.com/?clubs/putters/bcoz.htm) and found it to be a good investment. I turned over my best round for the course, and a great putting exhibition (only three-putted twice).

As for irons, I'm probably looking at the Slingshot, but just need to save up a little cash for it... or find a girlfriend to buy the set for me. :D

I'm very close to buying a set of Cleveland TA5s.

I think it's time to stop punishing myself for making a bad swing (which is not far from my old line of thinking) and get a set of clubs that are a bit more forgiving.

And ABC -- it was definitely a sign that you needed a new putter. :p

I might be flying to Farmington, NM to play Pinon Hills 4 or 5 times in a few months. It's not centrally located, but it's a 5-star course that costs about $30.

New Mexico? Sounds fun... maybe I'll see what it would cost for a weekend trip. $30 sounds right up my alley...

Here's the link:
http://www.fmtn.org/depts/parks/golf/phills.html

Weekend rate for non-residents (this is a muni course believe it or not) is $29.40 (cart is $20 extra). I know you can fly into Farmington on United (through Denver). I have a United voucher that I'm looking to use, so cost hasn't been a consideration. I'm guessing it's hard to find cheap airfare into Farmington though. However, I believe Albuquerque is about a 3.5 hour drive away, and I'd guess it's quite a bit cheaper to fly there.

This is my current favorite for a trip that does not include my wife. If we go somewhere together, which means we pay for one ticket, we're looking elsewhere. I don't think there's enough for her to do in/near Farmington while I golf.

Looks nice, it's only about 19 hours from my house. :)

I'll check into some things if we can get some more interest, although NM is stretching it for me.

Heh, if people are seriously looking at trying to meet over a weekend and play some golf in a central (ie, driveable) location, I may be interested. I know we have a decent contingent of people from southern WI, Illinois, St Louis, etc. Don't know how many golf though. Any decent but cheap courses in central IL?

There's a course by Fast Eddies (a cheap food and drink bar)!!

Okay, I bit the bullet and bought the Nike Slingshot Irons today. I had planned to hit at the range tonight, but things came up at home and was unable to get out. Either I'll break them in at the range Friday night or on the links on Saturday morning.

Can't wait. I feel like a kid at Christmastime with his new toy. :D

I took my new Nike Slingshot irons out for a round on Saturday morning. And they felt very good. Though initially, I felt slight vibrations upon contact with the ball. But I believe this was due to the change from graphite shaft of my old clubs to the steel shaft on the Slingshots. I must have either corrected my grip, or my hands just got used to the vibrations, because after a two holes, I wasn't bothered by them anymore.

As for hitting the ball, the (very few) times I hit it right, it felt real good and solid off the face and seemed effortless if you do make solid contact.

As for my round of golf... scored my worst ever round on the course. This, less than one week from scoring my best ever on the same course. Was it the clubs? The rainy weather? No excuses. I just suck. Need to work on my tee shots now. Time to buy some woods.

NOT what I wanted to hear. :) I need to find a place to demo those clubs.
