View Full Version : O-line depth

Just finished a season, which had the most frustrating ending I've had yet.

With 2 weeks to go in the regular season, and my Redskins topping the division by a game, my O-line imploded. BOTH starting tackles and my center went out, 2 of them until the following year.
Now because I've made a hash of the salary cap in previous years, and because of other guys I'd had to sign during the season to cover other injuries, I only had $10,000 of cap room, so couldn't go out and sign any replacements (because the salary pro-rates across the year, I'd have had to cut half my team to free up enough room to sign one player, never mind 2)

To cut a long story short, I had to finish the season with only 5 fit o-linemen. Lost the last 2 games, narrowly, and went into the playoffs as a wildcard. for the third year in a row!

Amazingly, I made it to the conference championship where I got blown out by Arizona, who then went on to win the Super Bowl.

Now, because of the rules built into the game about minimum players at each position, the guys who were out had to stay on my active roster. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to play the games.

Does anyone know what would have happened if one of my 5 fit guys had gone down???

Who'd have played on the o-line??? And how would this situation have played out in real life???

it was pointed out to me after I had a similar thing happen to my D-line - the salary cap only counts for the top 53 salaries on your team. ie, you could have IR'd the injured guys and signed scrubs for the minimum.

that's probably what would happen in real life as well.

IR doesn't affect the cap though, does it???

IR players still count against the cap (assuming they are among the 53 highest salaried players). they don't count against the 53-man roster limit.

And therein lay my problem - I was maxed out with only 48 guys signed.

Screwed up the cap my first and second seasons and can't afford to cut guys for another couple.....

You could have switched positions. Maybe a TE to O-line, then a fullback to TE, etc.

you could have switchd on "scout make minor roster moves" and they would have signed min sal players for you, then turned it back off.
