View Full Version : PS2 Problem?
Tell me what you think:
I decide about 3 hours ago to watch a DVD on the PS2...the video is cutting in and out, fading in and out. Works perfectly for a few seconds, and then fades out. It looks like when you have a vcr tape that isn't tracking properly.
Anyway, I worry my PS2 is screwed. I try adjusting cables, but there is no change. Then I try a dvd I watched just a week ago, and it works fine. Same with Memento. No problems at all.
Go back to the original movie, and no dice. Same problems.
Could it be a problem with the DVD? Well, let's try this: I place it in the DVD tray of my computer, and it is running fine on the computer. Note, I can't watch it on the computer, because I don't have audio.
Any ideas or thoughts?

My PS2 has always had a problem playing a small minority of movies. I don't understand why it has a problem with those movies, but it does. It lead me to eventually buy a seperate DVD player.

I have some DVD's that work in my cheapo Walmart DVD player and not my ps2, and vice-versa. Weird.

I'll betcha a buck that:
a) you've got your PS2 routed through a VCR, and
b) if you hook it directly to your TV (or to a switchbox instead of a VCR) the problem will miraculously disappear.

Oh, wait...it's only the one disc not working for you. Hrm.
Perhaps the above doesn't apply after all.

I'd go with Sack on this one, but if it's only one disk...weird.
A possibility I have thought of is the VCR. I have since tried a movie I haven't previously watched and it causes video problems as well.
Note, I watched Memento last night and it ran perfectly through out.
I have thought of maybe cleaning the lens and such, but I don't have the tiny phillips screwdriver to take the last case off. :(

Bring it over to my house. :)

I remember hearing something about the PS2 doesn't read as far ahead on movies than a normal dvd player and that with lower budget encoding this causes display problems on the PS2. But, this is just something I heard, not for any major source.

IT probably has to do with the format of the DVD and the hardware that the PS2 uses to play DVD's. There are several formats that companies use to print DVD movies and they all don't work well with all hardware. This sort of problem was a lot more common back when DVD players first came out, with the clipping and bad video. but doesn't suprise me that a non DVD dedicated machine like a PS2 would cause problems.

Sounds like you'll have to a buy a real DVD player if you want to watch "All About Jeff."
