This may seem a little odd, but I am trying to remember a childrens book that was read to me when I was younger, about 15 years ago.

Pink cover
A man has a house on a hill, a giraffe lives in his garden and sticks his head in the window. The man has to decide a particular hat to wear and asks his giraffe for advice. He drives his car into town and then goes into the forest to talk to bears.

I know that may seem a little vague, but maybe someone will know what I am talking about. I think it may be a british book . It would great if I could get the title, because I want to buy the book for my little nephew.

Thanks in advance.

Gavin

Off the top of my head it sounds like, but not perfectly like, Giraffe, and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl. However I'm guessing by other parts of your description that you're talking about a picture book. Is that right? If so I'll do some searching on the tools I use at work for you if no one knows it off the top of their head.

I don't think it is the Roald Dahl book and it was definitely a picture with a few lines of writing on each page. But thanks for the inital suggestion.

Are there any other details you can give? I'm not having much luck locating it yet. Even something trivial can be of help since it might offer me a good keyword to search with.

For instance why is the man driving to visit the bears? Is the hat thing a major plot point?

It might be a good idea to call a couple of local libraries and ask to speak to the children's librarian. Good librarians are amazing.

The librarian at the library where we go for Monday story night with our kids has the recall of a Cray computer when it comes to kid's books. She'll know this. If you don't have an answer by Monday, I'll ask her next week.

My girlfriend is a childrens librarian, and i'm going to talk to her in a few minutes. I'll see if it rings a bell.

That is pretty much all I can remember, I'll ask my sister tomorrow if she can remember anything. I'll ask the librarian at the public library also to see if she knows anything.

Thanks for the tips and if anyone else thinks this rings a bell please let me know.

my girlfriend didn't know anything off-hand, but says she has a couple good resources she can check out on Thursday to find out what it is. I'll report back on the results, unless you figure this out sooner.

Just for reference I work in the youth department of a library and came up nothing checking some resources we use (although I admittedly only spent about 10 minutes on the search). I hope someone else gets the answer since I would love to know what book it is.

Minor update. I emailed my girlfriend all the relevant info from this thread. When I talked to her she didn't recognize it, but said she'll look into further when she's back to work tomorrow. I'll report back with anything she comes up with.

the lucky **** is off today because of the snow. She gets the day off, I get a 2 hour commute. yay!

My personal library...

Section: Children's Books
Heading: Giraffes
Sub-heading: Hats

(Actually, I remembered the story title and did a Google search.)

All I can say is wow. It doesn't popup on Amazon or the two profession databases I checked.
