Maybe this has already been discussed, but if not ... how did we miss it?
Just saw the ESPN promo featuring fans & alums and such cheering for "the Nimrods".
In case you're curious, they are indeed a real team in Watersmeet, MI

I have a friend who grew up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and he told me the ESPN commercial is now a source of pride for people up there; those Yoopers REALLY don't have much to keep them occupied :D

I can't account for all of them of course, but ...
Syrupmaker is a straight play off the Cairo Syrup brand name.
The AtomSmashers are a nod to the nearby Savannah River Nuclear Facility.
The Angoras ... I haven't the foggiest.

Talk to MC about it. He hooked me up with mine. It looks just like the Sun Bowl...

This explains why the workers at Nordine's said thanks when I called them a bunch of nimrods a few summers ago.

Did you see the old guy they have singing the Nimrods fight song...
I dunno what to think. It's kinda cool.

Best one I heard was some highschool that changed its name to 'Fighting Whities", meant as a protest against ethnic names in general (i.e. Redskins).

I've been cheering for them ever since I saw Oldman Nimrod sing the school spirit song on that ESPN commercial. :)

It was an intramural team at U. of Northern Colorado that did that and sold shirts to benefit a Native American scholarship fund.

One of my favorite GMC nicknames is Middletown's, the Middies.
Our homecoming football t-shirts proudly boasted: LIGHT UP THE MIDDIES!
The administratrive staff didn't have a clue.

Come on, Shorty! It's Milford! You expect your administration to be able to read?

What, is a middie another term for a joint or something? I must be getting old...

Middie?
No clue. But, I'm also on the fast track to the administrative staff. Perhaps cluelessness is an occupational hazard?

One night upon my motorcycle through the desert spead
And smashed my body so that all my friends thought I was dead
My sister held me close and whispered to my bleeding head
"You are the son of a mother fucker"
One two three four
I shook all night and held her hand
Chocolate people well I'll be damned
Land of plenty, land of fun
To find out I'm Nimrod's son
Oh bury me
Far away please
Bury me
Ha-haaa
The joke has come upon me
In my motorcycle mirror I think about the life I've led
And how my soul's been aking all the holes where I have bled
My image spoke to me, yes to me and often said
"You are the son of incestuous union"
One two three
Now my head is clear
My luke hands washed
My daughter's pure
My son is tall
Land of plenty, land of fun
To find out I'm Nimrod's son
Oh bury me
Far away please
Bury me
Ha-ha Ha-ha
The joke has come upon me

Nimrod was an ancient false idol or warrior, not sure which it is. But it's Biblical.
What about the Whittier Poets?

Beetdigger isn't unique. A college buddy from Sandy, Utah graduated from Jordan High School, also known as the Jordan Beetdiggers.
Below is the address for the Jordan High website (change hxxp to http, as always). I wonder if being a Beetdigger boosted their debate team to its sixth consecutive state championship?
