I'm sure others will give more complete advice, but I can point out the difference between offensive winger and 'play to middle' quite easily. Just check out my friendly last night (match ID 13886368). I played my new acquistion, Jonas N. Ragnstal (and I love that he has a middle initial) a solid winger as "offensive" He earned 2.5 stars. He has no PM or passing skills worth mentioning. In his last game, the moron who owned him played him "to middle" thus taking advantage  of his POOR PM skills and earning 1.5 stars.

If you play wingers to middle, a portion (how much is an open question) of the winger's PM skill goes to your midfield, but his winger skill is diminished so your attack will be weaker. If your wingers have PM skill, you could try this, but if they don't have PM there is no point to playing them to middle because you will deplete your attack on that side and gain no benefit to for your midfield.

I heart offensive wingers and now have two solids.

My team is complete for this season.

I personally do not believe in ever playing a winger normal. You either play him offensive or toward middle.

Toward middle wingers obviously have at least solid stamina and some degree of playmaking; usually at least passable. You use one (or two) of these when you need a midfield boost, but it does cost your side attack when you use one.

Everything else is offensive winger. The only difference between offensive winger and normal is you get more attack and less defense from the player. Since 1) wingers contribute very little to defense anyway and 2) most wingers have much, much better winger skill than defense skill, this is an easy trade.

An offensive winger, as OG said, is one with a good winger skill, since when you play him offensive, his winger skill gets a boost. That boost comes to the expense of his defending skill which is diminished by the offensive order.

A possession type winger, or toward middle winger, is used to boost your midfield when you need it. A winger of that type need to have better playmaking, and also some good stamina, since for any player to use his playmaking skills, he NEEDS stamina, they go hand in hand. That is true for an inner midfielder, but it's also holds true for any player trying to supplement the midfield, like an offensive centreback, a toward middle winger, or a defensive forward.

When you play a winger toward middle, your player gets a boost in his playmaking skill, but a decrease of both his winger AND defending skills. Doing that, you basically give up that side of offense, since unless you have a very good playmaker AND winger. What I mean, and as OG said, it's not worth it to play a poor playmaker/solid winger toward middle, since you increase a weak skill and decrease a strong one, making the player pretty much useless. What I have always done when playing a winger toward middle is take a real inner midfielder and play him at winger toward middle. Most of the players that I used in that position never had more than poor winger, but they all had excellent (or high solid) playmaking with solid or better stamina. This usually means that side of attack will be at weak or inadequate, but I can usually get a level to a level and a half of increase in midfield by doing that. It's a pretty good strategy when you play an opponent that has a good midfield, but is very predictable with his lineups, i.e. always plays that same 3-5-2 pulling the same wingback all the time so you really need to attack very well on one side...

Hope this makes sense...

I have a question too.

If I play a winger towards middle and I already play a 3-5-2 pulling a wingback as the extra middie - will this cause confusion and ruin training?

no, why would it? A winger toward is still a winger. Just as if you play a defensive forward, he is not considered an inner midfielder, just a forward that helps the midfield...

Can anyone be so kind as to explain the winger position to me. Pretend I'm an idiot and explain to me the advantages disadvantages and differences between playing wingers both towards the middle, 1 towards the middle and 1 offensive or both symmetrical in the 3 5 2 formation. And what secondary skills should apply for these positions.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.... so,

Wingers aid in your attacks on the wings. They also aid in the defense of the wings.

A lot of people play wingers 'normal'.

A lot of other people play them offensive which likely translates in them trying to push forward and penetrate the opponent's corners where they can set up crosses. They do this at the expense of supporting the wing defense.

A few people play wingers defensive. They hang back and make crosses forward. By hanging back, the help out more with the defense of the wings but are not as effective in helping with an attack on goal.

A large number of people will play a winger toward the middle. These wingers usually have a decent amount of playmaking skill. The purpose being, to help reinforce the control of midfield. The drawback is, you lose some attacking and defending abilities.

Unless you need a slight midfield boost, leave your winger offensive, or at least normal.

My thoughts exactly.

Csmith, maybe you are better reading the answers already given to you in your first thread, then if something isn't clear enough, you could post some follow up questions...

It's okay, no big deal really. I was just starting to think that you really were an idiot, as both times you said "explain it to me as if I am an idiot" and "pretend I'm an idiot" ;)
