View Full Version : Can somebody please explain the whole draft phenomenon?

I have basically ignored the whole thing for the most part. I understand that people are drafting teams, but what for? Is there a big vote for whose team is the best? Is that all you get from it? Please help me out of my cave of ignorance!

It's not nearly as cool as the Poll phenomenon I helped spawn. ;)

i think the best thing you can do is keep posting polls...the drafts are a fad...your polls are timeless

Drafts can be fun for their own sake. Lots of people think half the fun of a fantasy league is the draft night. This is the same sort of thing.

The real drafts (all-time football, baseball auction) etc., were quite well done and a lot of fun. The next wave (video games, actors) were goofy knockoffs. Now, in fine FOFC tradition, there's the endless string of parodies.

If it bothers you, don't worry -- it will go away any day now, and FOFC will move on to the next flavor of the week.

Kodos - you were just drafted 4th overall in the FOFC member draft. Just FYI. ;)

I would just like to state, that our organization had no idea that kodos was saying things like this. Unless his attitude changes, we maybe be forced to drastic measures, like trading him to dallas :D

In your humble opinion.

I was the originator of the all-time football auction as well as actor draft. I think drafts in general are interesting because they involve subject knowledge, speculation, drama, as well as strategic planning and decision-making...thus the lure of the amateur football draft in real life.

I for one am really enjoying the actor draft. I don't think it's offensive in any way, so as with virtually every other thread at FOFC, if it bothers you don't read it.

I guess I don't understand them because there is no objective winner in the end. In fantasy football, your draft goes into a team that competes within a solidly defined set of rules that ultimately determines a winner. These other drafts don't offer an objective winner, but instead annoint only a subjective winner, so that's why I don't "get" them.

BTW, I'm not trying to detract from anyone else's enjoyment of them. Just trying to understand the appeal...

What makes one draftable? Could it be our old friend the post count? ;)

Maybe whoever drafted me was just trying to hit on me. ;)

Understood, no worries.

I think it's the thrill of the hunt rather than an objective winner and a definitive conclusion.

Don't forget, I'm the one who started the Video Game draft. I'm not throwing stones.

Maybe my problem is that I am hung up on establishing a clearcut winner.

That could be why I favor a college football playoff system, and don't see the point of gymnastics.

Isn't the point of gymnastics to see pre-pubescent looking women running around in their jammies? It's every pedophiles dream!

Maybe I've said too much...

I thought the point of gymnastics was training for future sexual excellence. The flexibility and backflips off the headboard are crowd pleasers...

Speaking as a participant in the actor draft, it's not a matter of having a winner...rather, it's more of a discussion of the relative merits of actors and films, and how they relate to each other.
