Rewind Dynasty - The New York Jets 2003 Dynasty

Defensive Line - The defensive line helped a Jets defense finish 5th against the run (98.3 yards per game) and 19th against the pass (230.5 yards per game). Part of the problem with the pass defense was pressure on the quarterback. The team finished with 31 sacks, tied for 25th worst in the league. Other than John Abraham (11 sacks) the pass rush is an area of concern.

John Abraham proved he was worth the long contract extension by leading the team with 11 sacks this season, he has also proved he can play the run equally well recording 66 tackles. Abraham was solid at the RDE position and looks forward to building upon this year's second half success (8 sacks, 32 tackles, 14 pressures).

At LDE was Abraham's counterpart, Shaun Ellis. Ellis struggled this season at times finishing with 5.5 sacks and 45 tackles. Ellis was looking for a contract similar to Abraham's when the season started, however, his demands have lessened, however, the Jets and Ellis are still far apart, Ellis will have his chance to sign elsewhere this year. This will leave a hole for the Jets to fill. They can draft another D-Linemen with a first round pick (4 in the last 5 seasons), or try to find a veteran to step in at a lesser cost. The later seems like the most realistic solution. We are already talking of moving Jonathan Vilma to the strong side, and Bailey over to the weak side, this would allow us to use Bailey as a pass rusher on passing downs. He has excellent rushing strength and technique to get to the quarterback.

In the trenches the team is beginning to see the development of an outstanding tackle. Ty Warren has developed the skills to be one of the best against the run. He recognizes plays so well, that he surprises many of his teammates and coaches at time. Warren recorded 65 tackles during the season and 3 sacks as well. Although, pass rushing still needs some work, Warren is playing at a level the team had only hoped for when they picked him number 13 overall two seasons ago.

Jason Ferguson's times with the Jets could be coming to an end, he has said that he would like to stay, and the team would like to keep him, however, if it does happen it will during the free agency period. Ferguson is excellent against the run, however, he does not have the ability to get after the quarterback, because he is not the complete player he once was, the team is hesitant to commit the money to him he is looking for ($9.2 million, 4 seasons). Ferguson recorded 52 tackles during the year, primarily in running situations. During passing situations he was replaced by 3rd year man, Alan Harper.

Harper contributed once again off the bench for the Jets. Playing in primarily passing downs, he recorded 2.5 sacks and 4 pressures. Harper will most likely be resigned to do the same again.

The Jets will also look to resign Cornelius Griffin. The former first round pick of the Giants played well for the Jets, and helped Warren along this season. It is possible that Griffin, if resigned, could compete to play along side Warren next season.

If the Jets do not sign anyone through free agency or fill the void of the departure of Ellis through the draft, the team might give Bryan Thomas the chance. What concerns the Jets is that Thomas is a natural RDE, same as Abraham, the team is reluctant to move Abraham, and unsure if Thomas can make the switch. As Abraham's back up this season, Thomas saw limited action.

Look for the Jets and veteran, Josh Evans to part ways as well. Evans played in just 8 games this season, but was beat out in the second half by 7th round pick Nathaniel Adibi. Adibi saw limited action as he continues to develop.

Linebackers - This was the strongest unit of the defense, led by middle linebacker, Sam Cowart. Cowart finished the season with 120 solo-tackles (3rd in the league), 1.5 sacks and a tackle percentage of 18.8 (4th in the league), a forced fumble and 3 interceptions. Cowart is 29 years old, and still has plenty of football in front of him. He is signed through 2007, next year's cap hit is a moderate $2.9 million. Not bad for one of the best defensive players in the league.

Second year man, Boss Bailey occupied the stong-side this season and enjoyed a fine year. Bailey finished 11th in the league in tackles among outside linebackers. Bailey's athleticism could find him in various positions next season. He is an excellent pass rusher (potential of 97 technique and 82 strength) and could be put into more pass rushing situations next season.

Rookie Jonathan Vilma had the opportunity to play all three linebacker positions. He primarily started at the weak-side in 11 games this season. Vilma finished with 46 solo tackles. Vilma is a smart player who can play the run and the pass equally as well as rush the quarterback. It looks as if Vilma will be moved to strong side next year to be on the field in nickle situations while Bailey will move to the weak side on first and second downs and the defensive end position on passing situations.

Reserve linebacker Al Singleton will probably be back as a backup to Vilma and Cowart. Singleton was brought in during the 2003 season to replace Mo Lewis. Singleton started in 13 games and was ineffective. This season he started one game and primarily saw action on special teams.

Second year reserve linebacker, Victor Hobson will be retained because of his small cap hit. The athletic Hobson has lots of ability to play the pass and rush the passer, however, he struggles against the run. Hobson will be the primary backup at the weak side behind Bailey next season.

Navies who just completed his second season with the Jets has struggled, he started the first 6 games of the 2003 season, before being replaced by Boss Bailey. Navies saw little action on defense this season and is sure to be released.

Jason Glenn will be an unrestricted free agent, the Jets will look to bring in or draft a middle linebacker to back up Cowart, meaning Glenn's days with the Jets are finished.

Secondary - This is an area that on paper looked like it improved, however, statistically that was not the case, in fact the pass defense got off to a horific start, allowing 257 yards passing per game through the halfway mark. However, by year's end the pass defense had settled down and brought that average down to 230 yards per game, finishing 19th in the league. There was changes made in the secondary, Alex Molden replaced Donnie Abraham, Jacoby Shepherd replaced Ray Mickens as the nickle back and the team drafted Dana McAllister with their second round pick to be the cornerback of the future. So, I guess you had to expect that it would take time to gell, now we have to plan for next season.

It is expected that our starting strong safety, Tyrone Carter will move on. Carter's contract is up and he is looking for a big commitment. We are not ready to do that with Carter. He is playing out of position at strong safety, and is not strong in man coverage. Carter has been the lone playmaker the past two seasons back there, intercepting 10 passes, and returning two back for touchdowns. Carter played along side, Jon McGraw.

McGraw just completed his second season as a starter with the Jets, and improvement is showing. McGraw might be better suited to be a stong safety for the Jets with his run stopping abilities and his hard hits. McGraw was in on 139 tackles the past two seasons. McGraw is sign at a modest salary through the 2006 season.

Depth at safety could be a concern, Derek Pagel completed his second season and struggles with the ability to diagnois plays. Lacking that skill will probably lead Pagel to be a reserve player for his career. The other deterent with Pagel is he lacks special team's abilities. Something you do not want working against you if you are not a starter. Rookie Etric Pruitt did have something to offer. Pruitt was selected in the third round. He is a wonderful athlete who can play special teams, and return the ball on kicks and punts. Pruitt averaged 24.0 yards per kick return and brought one back for a touchdown. Pruitt will see time on special teams and in reserve situations. He is a longshot right now to become a starter.

The corners were led by veteran Aaron Beasley this season. The nine year veteran enjoyed a solid season. Beasley is expected to be a cap casulty however, he is scheduled to count nearly $4.0 million against the cap next season. That is a lot of money for a 31 year old corner, who is just, OK.

Free agent acquisition, Alex Molden got off to a rough start with the team. Molden came over to be the playmaker after intercepting 7 with the Detroit the previous season. However, Molden was beat often earlier in the season, resulting in a benching. Molden did regain the spot back when Shepherd was injured and never looked back. Molden seemed to play like the team hoped he would late in the season and the playoffs. Molden will be 32 years old next season, and will be back with the opportunity to compete for the starting position or play nickleback, something the team feel he would excel at.

Jacoby Shepherd earned four starts during the season at corner and played well. Shepherd who is an average corner with average abilities, but could fit nice on a team in a reserve role. He is a free agent, and the team feels that if they want they can sign him. The question is, does he fit in? It is expected that the team will release Beasley and bring in another cornerback. We think that Molden is better suited at the nickle spot, however, finances would probably relegate us from signing two starting cornerbacks. So, Molden will get to start alongside someone new. We invested a 2nd round pick in McAllister, so we need to play him, and the best spot for that is at the nickle back. Now, we might draft another corner high, which would leave Shepherd out of the mix. So, if we do resign him, it will be late in the game.

Rookie corner, Dana McAllister struggled his rookie season. We had hoped to get McAllister in more, but he did see the field for 100 pass plays. McAllister has good size and potential, he just needs to get some time. It is still a little early to tell the levels McAllister will reach, but the Jets did move up in the second round to get him, so we are hoping.

Reserve corner Jason Webster signed late in the season with us when Molden went down with an injury. Webster played sparingly and said he enjoyed his brief stay with the Jets.

Pittsburgh Steelers (11-7) at Tennessee (11-6)

The resillient Steelers, rolled into the defending AFC Champions, the Tennssee Titans looking to earn a trip to the Super Bowl, it would be Pittsburgh's sixth in the history of the franchise. The Steelers led by a bunch of no-names defeated Buffalo in the Wild-Card round, than knocked off the Jets in the Divisional round of the playoffs.

The Titans are here as the number one seed, and last year's Conference Champion. The Titans were defeated in the Super Bowl by Tampa Bay, 27-10. The Titans are looking for their third trip back. The Titans are led on offense by Steve McNair and Derrick Mason through the air and a young pair of bruising running backs, Christopher Brown and Steven Jackson.

St. Louis Rams (12-5) at Tampa Bay Buccanears (13-4)

It seems rare lately to end up with an #1 vs. #2 matchup, but we have one in St. Louis and Tampa Bay. The story line is about to of the most successful NFL franchises in the past five season. St. Louis has been to the Super Bowl twice, and has a victory. Tampa Bay is looking to make history and earn a third consecutive trip to the Super Bowl and win.

The Rams are once again led by its aerial attack. Kurt Warner had another tremendous season, throwing for nearly 4,700 yards and 28 touchdown passes. The Rams had to rely on their passing game that much more when the team made the tough decision to part ways with Marshall Faulk, and although they do not have much of a running game anymore, they can still strike quickly. The Rams defeated Dallas to get here in convincing fashion, and now must face the Bucs again in the playoffs. Last season the Bucs defeated the Rams in the Divisional round 20-16.

The Bucs came off a wonderful 2003 season capped by its second straight Super Bowl, but changes were coming because of their cap situaton. Coach Brock Hicks would not let that be an excuse. After a slow start, 2-3 the Bucs are now on a roll, winning 10 straight. Brad Johnson had a super year, while getting necessary help from the running game of Michael Pittman and receiving of Donald Driver. The defense however kept it going in Tampa. The defense was 2nd against the pass and third against the run. Tampa believes this is the new form of a football dynasty and one that no-one thought they would see ever again.

We will keep our RFA's, and give them the opportunity in Training Camp to keep a roster spot. Both Harper and Baker have contributed while Navarre was our 3rd string QB this season, and Cotchery was lost for the year in the first game of the season.

Our Unrestricted Free Agents is another story, lets start with the ones who will not be offered a contract, and will have the opportunity to explore free agency. Shaun Ellis is rated high by our scout, but his production just does not warrant $20.5 million over the next 3 seasons. I am sure he will receive that money from someone and move on. Tyrone Carter has been solid for us in his two seasons, but he wants more than we would like to pay for him. We feel Jon McGraw can make the move from Free Safety to Strong Safety. We can find a more affordable Free Safety through free agency or the draft. DT, Jason Ferguson had a solid season, however, he is 30-years old, and still wants a tad too much money in my opinion. We will opt to hold out and see if he is still available come Late Free Agency, if so, we may pursue him then. We will look to replace Anthony Becht with a receiver type Tight End. Jason Glenn will have the chance to earn playing time somewhere else. Same goes for Cornelius Griffin, Marcus Robinson, Jason Webster, and LJ Shelton.

These players will be considered, we would like to keep them, but should we pay them the money. Kicker Doug Brien is one that is troubling me. Brien has a strong leg, but lack the accuracy you would like to see (he is under 70% in two seasons), he want the big contract. Now, I would normally let him go, however, there does not appear to be many kickers available. I might roll the dice here and hope to sign him during free agency. I will not get into a bidding war with another team though. Lamont Jordan is the other interesting player. There is no doubt that Martin is on the decline, but Martin will be back with the team. Jordan is not the likely replacement for Martin, so we may need to find Martin's replacement immediately and therefore, there is no role for Jordan with the team. Jacoby Shepherd did a nice job this season. Shepherd is more a reserve type player, the question is do we have room for Shepherd with the drafting of McAllister last season. If Shepherd is willing to be a dime back, the Jets can make an offer for him is dime back money.

Pensacola, FL - Super Bowl XXXIX figured to be a one sided affair, as the two time defending champions, Tampa Bay, hosted a guttsy Pittsburgh Steelers team that was hit with injuries the past two weeks. The Steelers, led by unwanted quarterback Brian Griese, never wavered, even when Tampa Bay's first touch of the football resulted in a touchdown. The Steelers continued to grind it out, make the plays, cause turnovers, and when all was said and done, the Steelers hoisted the Lombardi Trophy for the fifth time.
They defeated the Bucs, 37-31 in overtime. Congratualtions to the Pittsburgh Steelers!

Our franchise value has moved to 22nd, up from 24th last season. We will once again propose for a new stadium. The New York Jets have announced the final plans for their 65,000 seat stadium to be constructed on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The Stadium is to be constructed by a top quality construction firm at an estimated cost of $500 million. It is believed that the Jets' Organization will contribute $125 million while the rest will be asked for during a public vote.

The plans include a retractable roof with a grass playing field. Although many Jet officials have said they do not plan on using the roof and altering the games because of the weather, they feel that the retractable roof will make the plans more appealing to the public for the use of other events besides the minimum of ten football games.

The Stadium will include many features that do not exist in their current stadium including 138 luxury suites and 8,500 club seats, sit down restaurants and entertainment. Last season's proposal had the plans at 70,000 seats, 10,000 club seats and 200 luxury boxes.

Hopefully by cutting some of our demands the city will approve. If not the next plan calls for us asking for a dome, so that we can still use the building for other events during the year.

Our organziations brought in $97,450,000 during the 2004 season. We had expenses of $89,760,000. The net result was a profit of $7,690,000. Based on last season's costs we have determined to spend the following this season. Our largest revenue came from our ticket revenue. Last season $35,840,000 was collected. However, we only averaged 70,500 during home games, that is only 88.4% capacity. We will keep ticket prices where they are this season, in hope of drawing more attendance.

Last season we spent $27,010,000 on player bonuses. We will set a cap of $20,000,000 on player bonuses this season. Looking at our current roster the only player that would command the big dollars right now is Santana Moss, whose contract expires at the end of the 2005 season.

We will have a rise in scout and coaching staff salaries this season, we need to either resign our current defensive coordinator, or hire someone else. This could prove to be the most difficult decision during the off-season.

I look over our head coach's ratings, and they are not that impressive, however, the team was successful last season. I feel that the organization has always been in influx, so to speak, therefore I have decided to keep McGregor on for the 2005 season.

However, we do enter this stage of the season with some uncertainty. Our defensive coordinator, Arnie Hanrahan's contract has expired, he has expressed the desire to stay, however, his demands have risen. Hanrahan came here with the coach, Ed McGregor. Hanrahan now wants to make a salary somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.5 million, that would be considerably more than McGregor's $1.5 million. I do not expect many teams to be calling on Hanrahan so if I did want to keep him I could gamble and wait it out, to get him at less of a cost, or I could shop for a new coordinator. The defensive coordinator that should draw a lot of interest is Tampa's Ernest Shields. The 38-year old is due a new contract, and with his demand so high, it could end up being a bidding war.

On the scouting front I think I will look to go another way. Daryl Whiting has done a fair job of evaluating talent. His rating of the draft have faired average results along with his evaluation of the free agent market. Possible target replacements include, Jamie Lazetti from Jacksonville, Eric Mailo from Arizona, Reggie Brock from Chicago, or a few with no experience as a lead scout, Tommie Lyon from Philadelphia, or Roderick Browning of St.Louis.

Hempstead, NY - The Jets are prepared to make offers to two canidates for the 2005 season. The Jets need to address their defensive coordinator position that was previously held by Arnie Hanrahan. Hanrahan has asked for more than what the Jets had anticipated, therefore the team will seek a coordinator from somewhere else. The team has Tampa Bay's defensive coordinator, Ernest Shields at the top of their list. He is looking for a deal of around $2.16 million. The team is prepared to offer him a deal for 4 years in the neighborhood of $2.3 million. The Jets realize that this will be the most sought after defensive coordinator, but the Jets feel he would be their best fit right now.

The team is also in need of a new head scout. The writing is on the wall that the Jets will fire Daryl Whiting. Whiting has had some success but, however, General Manager Michael Marra would like a more accurate assessment of the draft pool and potential free agents. The Jets are targeting Jacksonville's lead scout, Jamie Lazetti. The Jets are reportedly prepared to offer him a 4 year deal for $350,000.

DEFENSE!!

Hempstead, NY - The Jets finished off filling their staff vacancies with the signings of Ernest Shields to lead the defense and Roderick Browning to lead the scouting.

Perhaps the Jets biggest signing this off-season will be that of Shields. He is regarded as one of the brightest young football minds in the game. At age 38, Shields has two Super Bowl rings that he earned as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator with Tampa Bay. He was the team's linebacker coach from 1999-2001 and the defensive coordinator with the Bucs for the 2002 and 2003 season in which they won consecutive Super Bowls and the 2004 season in which they won the NFC Championship. Shields says he was fortunate to be surrounded by a slew of talent. However, the Jets see differently. They see a coach who is exceptional at getting the most out of his young players and molding them into successful pros, and knows each area of the defense, from the line to the secondary.

The Jets went through the interviewing process to find their scout, and perhaps Browning was not their first choice they feel they got a solid canidate. Browning was with Chicago the past few seasons and has a reputation throughout the league of finding good defensive players, along with linemen and running backs. This fits the Jets well, they are in a transition period to redevelop their running game, which means finding some quality linemen, and a future running back.

The Jets tried to lure Jamie Lazetti from Jacksonville, but Jacksonville made Lazetti an offer he could not refuse, 4 years at $440,000. A bit more than the Jets would have offered. The Jets then set their sights on Tommie Lyon. Lyon's asking price was a bit high, and Green Bay bit. Lyon signed a 5 year deal for $430,000. It is believed that the Jets were not inclined to pay that much for someone's first lead scout position. The Jets then turned to Roderick Browning, who began to draw some interest as a stong interviewer with a plan in place on how to evaluate the Jets current roster and what needs he felt were necessary to reach the next level.

With the staff period over, it is time to turn the attention to the free agent market and 2005 NFL Draft.

Coaching Changes

Roderick Kramer leaves Jacksonville for Arizona. Kramer brings with him a 19-15 record the past two seasons that includes a division championship in 2003. Arizona did a nice job in assembly a fine looking staff, now they need to raise the level of talent in Arizona. They are young, and have plenty of room under the cap, there biggest decision this off-season is whether or not last year's surprise, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is worth the investment. It is an organziation heading in the right direction.

Jacksonville hires Harvey Carlson to replace Kramer. Carlson is very good at game planning and executing the offense and defense.

Fired Arizona Coach, Derrick George is now the defensive coordinator in St. Louis. St. Louis gets a very good coordinator in George. George has the ratings to be a very good coach, however, the talent was lacking in Arizona. If St. Louis can improve defensively they will be a tough team to beat.

St. Louis fired defensive coordinator Randal Webb. Webb is currently without a team.

Arizona finished the overhaul of their new staff by hiring Rod Falvey as their new offensive coordinator. Former coordinator, Deon Walker has not been hired.

The Jets hired Ernest Shield to replace Arnie Hanrahan as their defensive coordinator. Shields comes from Tampa Bay where he was the coodinator for much of thier recent success.

Hanrahan was quickly hired by Minnesota. Hanrahan lessen his demands when the Jets did not come calling. Hanrahan replaces Clarence Spellman, who is out all together.

Tampa Bay hired Otis Atkins to replace Shields. The 62-year old Atkins has zero experience as a defensive coordinator.

Tennessee and Carolina swap defensive coordinators. Tennessee hires Louie Rhodes, while Carolina hires Mercury Jacobs.

Detroit fired Chester Hughes in a bit of a surprise move, the Lions had shown improvement defensively and are fresh off a division title. The Lions hired Jim Woodson who is regarded highly with his ability to develop the secondary.

The off-season is underway, we have currently finished filling our staff and are not evaluating potential free agents, and preparing for the 2005 draft.

Finiancially we are once again going to freeze ticket prices for the second concecutive year. Attendance throughout the league dropped slightly, although our fans show good support we are not going to raise prices and turn any fans off. We feel that our successful 2004 season will help draw more to our home games.

As far as personnel goes, we are in the process of making some tough decisions. Shaun Ellis is as good as gone, the decision we are considering, is to tag him a "franchise player," or not. If we do tag him, we will immediately look to deal him for picks or a player, one to replace him or in our secondary. The gamble is, if no one shows interest we are stuck with a heafty cap hit. Ellis has expressed to the organization that if he is not signed by us to a long term deal he want to have the option to explore free agency.

Also, we are mulling over what to do with Aaron Beasley, our secondary leader. Beasley is in the last year of his contract, and willing to renegotiate to where his cap hit would be about 30% less, however, we are then commited to him for another two years or so. Beasley was solid this season, however, we do want to upgrade the position here. Our corners primarily fall into that oof the bench, nickel, dime type corner. Beasely does give us insurance. If we opt to let Beasely go, our attention will go directly to Jacoby Shepherd. Shepherd is an average player in all areas, however, he can battle with last year's 2nd round draft selection, Dana McAllister for the nickel spot. It is expected that Molden will be starting once again, despite his inconsistent performance in 2004.

Solo Play Game Notes - I am currently updating and tweaking the 2005 draft file of real players that I will use, it appears that there will be some inaccuracies due to the commitments of Juniors. I realize commitment day has come and gone, however, to edit that much is becomming a bit overwhelming. I have run some tests with my file, and right now I still have some tweaking to do, it appears to me that the D-Line, Linebackers and Running Backs are lacking ratings and players, so that is where my attetion will be focused.

Also, in tests runs I have noticed that there are a number of talented free agents available. In order to not take advantage of this to "stock my team," I am trying to handle this in a realistic matter. I figure I will limit the amount of bonus money I have, and perhaps limit myself to siging only my players, and focus on just one unrestricted free agent at a time. That would probably limit me to signing about four unrestricted free agents during the initial 20 stages.

My goal is to win a championship for the Jets for the first time since 1969, while operating at a profit.

The 2005 Draft File is edited and complete, I ran several tests with it and found that the ratings fell within line of the files generated by the game. There are still some names missing, but overall I feel pleased with it and I am ready to move on. Now, I need to look back over my team to see what it is I planned to do this off-season.

Hempstead, NY - As the first day of free agent signing approaches the Jets have made the moves necessary to free up some cap space. The team has released six players, cornerback Aaron Beasley, linebacker Al Singleton, linebacker Hannibal Navies, tackle Lance Nimmo, defensive end Josh Evans and guard Dave Yovanovits.

Also, the Jets resigned restricted free agents defensive tackle Alan Harper, quarterback John Navarre, wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery.

The Jets now have 35 players under contract for the 2005 season.

This year's free agent class brings a lot to the table for many teams, this is the opportunity for teams to find, replace or fix the players they needed during their past season. Despite teams success, they are still in need of players, and in each team is carefully evaluating the available players that they can bid on and try to acquire to help their chances of a 2005 Super Bowl.

The top Quarterbacks available are Kerry Collins, Vinny Testaverde, Marc Bulger, Mark Brunnell, Tim Couch, and Brian Griese. All six of these quarterbacks started games last season, of the six Mark Brunell saw the least action, starting and playing in just two games before he was injured, never to regain the starting position back from Byron Leftwich. Kerry Collins will command the most money, it is surprising that the Giants did not tag Collins based on what he has done for them the past two seasons, going 21-11, throwing for nearly 7,000 yards and 50 touchdown passes. The other surprise is how the Saints are letting Bulger get away. Bulger threw for more than 4,300 yards last season and 31 touchdown passes. His plan of siging a one year deal for minimum money has panned out, he will surely get the dollars now. And the Super Bowl MVP is available, Brian Griese. Griese struggled at times during the regular season for the Steelers, but was wonderful in the playoffs. I guess the Steelers released Griese based on his 22 regular season interceptions last season. Not sure if Griese will get another starting job, but he will certainly find the role as a backup somewhere.

The Running Back class is not that strong, but could be a quick fix for some. Thomas Jones, Musa Smith, Stacey Mack, Keevan Barlow, and Michael Pittman leads this group. Jones enjoyed a fine season in Dallas rushing for 1,005 yards on just 230 carries. Musa Smith was primarily the #2 guy in Jacksonville behind Freddy Taylor, and Smith had an average of nearly 5 yards per carry on 237 carries over the last two seasons. Smith is a big back who can take it inside. Mack revieved his career last season with the Bears rushing for over 900 yards. The nock on Mack is that he is going to be 31 years old. A player looking for a fresh start is 5-year vet, Keevan Barlow. After 3 wonderful seasons as a back up, Barlow got his chance to start this season, and struggled. Barlow averaged just 3.6 yards per carry in rushing for 860 yards. And if you want a Super Bowl MVP, here is the 2003 player, Michael Pittman. Pittman rushed for nearly 2,000 yards over the past two season for the NFC Champions.

Fullbacks available are Fred McCrary, William Henderson, Ovie Mughelli. All three are exceptional blockers. McCrary has the added dimension of being an exceptional receiver out of the backfield. McCrary caught 40 passes last season for the Patriots.

The Tight End class is deep, led by Bubba Franks, Ken Dilger, Jason Dunn, Anthony Becht, and Cameron Cleeland. Bubba Franks can do it all for you, he is a wonderful blocker for both the running and passing game, and can make the catch when his number is called. Dilger is a very similar player to Franks, however, Dilger is 34 years old. The best receiver of the group is Cleeland, he has caught 130 passes over the past two seasons with the Rams. Plenty of depth to choose from once Franks and Dilger are out of the mix.

The Wide Receiver class is deep with talent led by the outstanding Marvin Harrison. Harrison's numbers have been down the past two seasons catching 128 passes, unlike Harrison number. But he is still the best receiver available. After Harrison you have Quincy Morgan, Chris Chambers, Muhsin Muhammad and Bobby Shaw available. Morgan has had two very good seasons for the Browns catching 140 passes and 10 touchdowns. He can also return punts for you.

The Centers include Todd McClure, Tim Ruddy, Lennie Friedman, Adam Treu, and Kendall Gammons. McClure is a player whose stock in the league is on the rise. Teams are starting to take notice of McClure, and the Falcons will miss his pressence in the middle. The All-Pro Tim Ruddy is still plugging along. Ruddy is 33 years old, but is still a devestating run blocker.

The Guards include Jermane Mayberry, Marco Rivera, Kenyatta Jones, Ruben Brown, and Matt O'Dwyer. Mayberry may be one of the best run blocking guards in the league, and at the age of 31 still has a couple of seasons left. Rivera is more of a finess blocker who would excel in a pass oriented offense. Once Favre hung it up, Rivera was out of Green Bay.

The Tackles include Oliver Ross, John Tait, Derrick Deese, Damion McIntosh, and Wayne Gandy. No team here is going to find their franchise left tackle, however an interesting player is right tackle Oliver Ross of the Steelers. Ross is a perfectly skilled blocker for both the run and the pass. The knock on Ross is that he can be overpowered. Tait is a great run blocker but does struggle in pass protection, that is the reason the Chiefs let him go, and now the Ravens after one season. Deese had a solid season in San Francisco but at 35 how much longer can he go?

The top defensive free agents this season is led by All-Pro Corner Charles Woodson, cornerback Andre Dyson, linebacker Kendrell Bell, and safeties, Idrees Bashir and Sammy Knight.

At Defensive End the teams will look at many players who bring different attributes. Shaun Ellis, Chad Bratzke, Gary Walker, Aaron Smith, and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila lead this group that can be classified as mediocre. Gary Walker comes off perhaps the most successful season of these players as he finished with 14.5 sacks, but at 32 how many teams will commit long term to Walker. Ellis and Jevon Kearse have the highest demands, and with Ellis having little success last season, and Kearse ranked only the 6th best defensive end, these players may wait a while to sign.

The Defensive Tackle position is led by a group of veterans, many have already reached the age of 30. This 30+ club is led by Seth Payne, Shane Burton, Dan Wilkinson, Hollis Thomas and Dana Stubblefield. With the exception of Payne, many of the free agent defensive tackles are looking for modest contracts, so look for these guys to get snapped up quickly. Wilkinson was an All-Pro in 2003, but his production dropped off in 2004. Just like most of these players who are reaching the end of their careers.

The Inside Linebackers is led by three real good ones, but after that you are looking at reserve type players. Want to bring a championship leader to your defense, then look no further than Kendrell Bell. Bell is only entering his 5th season, but he is just beginning to reach his full potential. Bell can do it all, rush the passer, stop the run, and call out the defensive audibles. If Bell is gone, you could attempt to sign 9 year vet, James Farrior, the former Steeler played just one season in Philly before they decided to part ways, could Farrior be heading back to Pittsburgh? Nate Webster had a monster season with Cleveland last year, however, he lacks the everydown ability the Browns are looking for, making Webster a nice player to be had. The knock on Webster, he is only 5'11".

At Outside Linebacker, the top players are Keith Bulluck, Nate Wayne, Dwayne Rudd, Matt Stewart, and Keith Mitchell. The Titans would have loved to have kept Bulluck but the Titans are struggling to get their cap in good shape. Bulluck is a soid player who has good size, and can be an every down player. The Eagles may be parting with Wayne as well as Farrior. Wayne enjoyed a decent year in Philly. Wayne would be a nice addition for a team looking for a veteran linebacker. Rudd and the Bucs have parted ways after 3 straight NFC Championships. Rudd had been faded out of the Bucs plans and looks for a rebirth somewhere else.

At Cornerback you have a good group this year led by All-Pro Charles Woodson, Andre Dyson, Daylon McCutcheon, Marcus Coleman and Artell Hawkins. Without a doubt Woodson and Dyson are in a class of their own in this group, however, there are very capable starters in this group.

The Safeties fall into the same class as the cornerbacks. The Safety position is led by Idrees Bashir and Sammy Knight, but after that there are very capable starters, including Kenoy Kennedy, Tyrone Carter, and Aric Morris. Looking for a ball hawk then Bashir or Carter fit that role, looking for the punishing hitter, than go no further than Sammy Knight or Kenoy Kennedy.

No matter what your preference, there is plenty to choose from, so choose wisely and make the decision that can get your team to the Super Bowl.

One of my goals in Solo Play is to keep operating costs in the green, as you can see last season my team's profit was nearly $7.7 million. Now in 2005 I aim to continue that. I have not paid any signing bonuses yet, therefore my profit sits at a projected $38 million. Salaries and Bonuses are a major hit on this number, and my goal is keep my combined salary and bonus spending at $65 million. That is $3.5 million less than last season, but I am trying to factor in Stadium costs if my addendum passes for a new stadium. Also, I am leaving approximately $12 million in reserve to sign Santana Moss to a contract extension, he is currently seeking approximately $12 million in signing bonus and $1 million in salary for 2005. (My house rule is that you cannot resign/renegotiate with a player on your team until they are in the last year of their contract.) Negotiations should start for that shortly after the free agency period. Therefore, my salary and bonus money is down to $52 million. Thus far I have spent $37 million on player salaries, leaving me with $16 million to spend on free agency and the draft. So, I have my work cut out for me. I have to sign the right players at the right price to keep my team on the right track. I look at the signing of Pennington and Abraham during last season as major signings for this year, so I have done a lot of work in keeping the cornerstones of my franchise in place.

We were quiet for Stage 1 of Free Agency, making no bids. We are strapped for cash, so we are taking it slow, letting the market set up, not to mention we have 35 players under contract while the next largest team has 26 (I still think that is a major flaw in the game that should have been addressed further with one of the many patches released in the past few months). So, along with that we are allowing other teams to set their rosters as well. And one of the positions we are looking to upgrade, cornerback began with a flurry. Four corners were signed in the 1st stage. The big signings were:

Kerry Collins resigned with the Giants for 3 years, and $18.3 million. The 33-year old still has plenty of football in him, and since joining the Giants in 1999, he has resurrected his career. Collins was also sought after by Cleveland.

Charles Woodson has left Oakland for Cleveland. Why the Raiders would allow this all-pro to go is puzzling. You can say that if they were tight within the cap you could understand, however, they were willing to slap the franchise tag on wide receiver Jerry Porter, so one must think that Woodson wore out his stay in Oakland. The Browns get an amazing shut down corner, now they need to work on their linebackers to put together a solid defense to help improve upon their 4-12 season in 2004.

Daylon McCutheon has left the Browns for Detroit for 3 years and $3.25 million. McCutheon will be paired up with last year's number one pick, Bruce Thornton. (This was a player I was looking at hard, my concern was his play diagnosis and intelligence).

Matt Stewart was signed by the Raiders from Atlanta for 5 years and $14.02 million. Stewart who plays the run well, has been known to struggle in the passing game. The Raiders are now $17.8 million under the cap, but have only 22 signed.

The Patriots upgraded their secondary with the signing of Artell Hawkins. Hawkins signed with the Pats for 4 years, $11.9 million. Hawkins had 6 interceptions with the Bengals last season. Hawkins and Law will provide the Pats with two solid corners. The signing of Hawkins certainly means that Jamar Fletcher will not be re-signed. Fletcher surprised everyone last season when he played for the minimum and recorded 4 interceptions.

Tyrone Carter leaves New York for Green Bay. Carter signed a modest deal for 3 years $2.41 million. His demands went down considerably from the time he left the Jets. Carter is a ball hawk who had 10 interceptions over the past two seasons.

Brian Yong, DT, signed with Houston from Atlanta for 2 years $1.4 million.
Bryant Westbrook, CB, signed with Houston from Green Bay for 3 years, $8.7 million.
Deon Grant, S, signed with Indianapolis from Carolina for 2 years, $1.3 million.
Jerome Woods, S, signed with Carolina from Kansas City for 3 years, $3.62 million.

Marvin Harrison has found a new home. Harrison has left Peyton and the Colts for Carolina, it was surprising that the Colts did not attempt to keep Harrison based on the fact that they are $17 million under the cap. Harrison signed with Carolina for 3 years, $21.03 million. This is Carolina's second big signing in as many days. The Panthers are also attempting to bring in quarterback Marc Bulger. Harrison caught 72 passes for 1,119 yards and 8 touchdowns last season.

Bubba Franks turned down more money from Cincinnati and a deal of less years with Cleveland to re-sign with the Packers. Franks was regarded as the best free agent tight end this season. He signed a contract for 6 years and $21.26 million. Franks has caught 102 passes over the past two seasons. Now he will become the tight end a young quarterback like Rex Grossman needs.

Jermane Mayberry signed with Detroit for 3 years and $13.11 million from Philadelphia. The Eagles were relcutant to resign Mayberry as he still recovers from MCL surgery. Mayberry has played in just 9 games the past two seasons.

Green Bay found a good right tackle to proctect their new quarterback, Rex Grossman. Oliver Ross leaves the defending champions, Pittsburgh to head to Green Bay and $10.85 million over the next three seasons. Ross has played in just 16 games the past two seasons but is a master blocker when healthy.

Green Bay continued their signings, but this time they sured up their secondary by signing 10-year veteran cornerback, Marcus Coleman. Coleman signed with the Pack for 3 years, $7.2 million.

Other signings:
Quincy Morgan, WR, signed with Seattle from Cleveland for 4 years $13.61 million.

Muhsin Muhammad, WR, signed with Jacksonville from Carolina for 3 years, $7.78 million.

Gary Walker, DE, signed with Seattle from Houston for 3 years, $3.97 million.

Corey Chavous, S, signed with Cincinnati from Minnesota for 3 yars, $3.46 million.

Tommie Polley, OLB, signed with Oakland from St. Louis for 3 years, $2.59 million.

A second player, Tommie Polley that we were eyeing up is gone along with Daylon McCutcheon.

Hempstead, NY - The Jets had three free agents in to visit their facility yesterday and meet the staff. Among them were Andre Dyson, cornerback, from Tennessee, Khalid Abdullah, linebacker, from Cincinnati and Chike Okeafor, defensive end, from Seattle.

Of the group Dyson is the player who would be a big signing. Dyson is seeking a deal believed to be 4 years, $14 million. Dyson is a solid all around player that would immediately upgrade the Jets secondary. With many team already signing cornerbacks in the first two days the Jets were excited to talk with Dyson. Dyson's agent informed the Jets that he is moving along slowly and meeting with many interested teams to hear them out.

Abdullah is a player that is a natural weak side linebacker. This would allow the Jets to have depth at the linebacker position and possibly set up Vilma to compete with Cowart for playing time at middle linebacker.

Okeafor played the past two seasons with the Seahawks and is looking to move on. The problem could be that Okeafor has played right end, just like John Abraham. Okeafor did seem concern that he would be brought in and asked to possibly move. But Okeafor likes the idea of playing on the big stage in New York and on the east coast for the first time in his career.

It is believed that the Jets will present an offer to Abdullah as early as tomorrow, but will have to wait to see if Dyson is ready to field offers and if Okeafor could work along with Abraham.

There was some more free agency moves here in stage three, the biggest signings were:

Guard, Marco Rivera signing with Houston from Green Bay for a reported $11.3 million over the next three seasons. Rivera has given up just one sack over the past two seasons, however, that is only in 21 games. Rivera played just 5 games last season, so Green Bay was willing to take there chance with him leaving. Houston continues to be aggressive during free agency signing there fourth player. Rivera will play guard with newly acquired Kenyatta Jones, who signed a 3 year $5.98 million contract, to help form a solid center of the line for quarterback David Carr, and running back, Jonathan Wells. Houston has also made offers to all-world kicker Adam Vinatieri and defensive end, Chad Bratzke. Rivera turned down a larger offer from Oakland.

Linebacker Kendrell Bell has left the Champion Steelers for Indianapolis. Bell signed a 4 years deal for $10.81 million. Bell played in 15 games last season and recorded 66 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks and 3 interceptions. Bell will be in the middle of defensive rookie of the year last season, DJ Williams and newly acquired weak side linebacker, Charlie Clemons. Bell turned down a larger contract from New England in which he would have earned approximately $2.5 million more over the life of the contract.

Linebacker James Farrior resigned with Philadelphia. Farrior started 15 games last season and recorded 65 solo tackles for the Eagles.

WR, Bobby Shaw left Buffalo for Jacksonville for $2.87 million over 3 years.

Linebacker, Nate Wayne also resigned with Philadelphia to remain with Farrior for 3 years, and $2.31 million.

Linebacker, Charlie Clemmons left Houston for Indianapolis for 3 years and $2.72 million.

Cornerback Jason Craft left Carolina for Cincinnati for 3 years and $3.38 million.

Hempstead, NY - The Jets got into the Free Agency period making an offer to outside linebacker, Khalid Abdullah for 2 years and $1.06 million. Abdullah played with Cincinnati the previous two seasons and recorded 111 tackles and 6.5 sacks. The Jets are hoping to add depth to their linebacker corps and have a true weak side linebacker.

The Jets have also excercised their right in retaining restricted free agent tight end, Chris Baker for a $480,000 this season.

The Jets have invited defensive end Aaron Smith who played with Dallas last season and right guard, Steve Sciullo who was with Indianapolis the past two seasons and tight end Steve Heiden who was with the Browns the previous three seasons and San Diego for the first three seasons of his career. Heiden is a devestating run blocker who is big and can make the tough short catches in the passing game.

Smith has started just 6 games over the past two seasons. His primary role has been to rush the quarterback on passing downs. The Jets are looking to him to be an everydown player if he comes here. They could be offering a contract to him as early as tomorrow.

Sciullo is still a little raw, but has shown great technique in just two seasons with the Colts. Sciullo would be brought in to compete with last year's rookie surpise, Quinn Christensen. The Jets are happy with Christensen, but after the teams lack of a consistent running game last year, the team is hopeful to improve.

The biggest signing of stage 4 has to be kicker, Adam Vinatieri. Vinatieri signed a 4 year deal worth $9.62 million with the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers who lost out on their long term kicker, John Kasay when he signed with Arizona, realize the importance of a super kicker. The Panthers get that in Vinatieri, who has a grade of 9.0. He was on the first All-Pro Team last season with the Pats when he converted 40 of 44 field goals and 24 of 25 extra points. Vinatieri finished the season with 144 points, leading the league.

Cleveland gets the upgrade at tight end they feel they need with the signing of Ken Dilger. Dilger has been part of the Buccanears and their recent run of three straight NFC Title. The Browns hope that $4.52 million over the next 3 seasons can bring them some of the same success. Now Dilger needs to convince Cleveland to bring in a quarterback.

Vinny Testaverde finds himself on the move once again, as he leaves Chicago for Minnesota. Testaverde is expected to come in and start for the season as the Vikes hope their franchise quarterback recovers from repetitive concussion syndrome. Testaverde will have plenty of weapons to work with in running backs Michael Bennett and Onterrio Smith along with all-world Randy Moss and tight end Hunter Goodwin. The Vikes are also trying to secure the signing of Chris Chambers.

Hempstead, NY - The Jets will have to make a decision quickly as Philadelphia has extended an offer to cornerback, Jacoby Shepherd. Shepherd started 8 games for the Jets last season, and continued to show improvement as the season went on. Shepherd is not the big playmaker, however, is a constant who learned the Jets system after two seasons and continues to blossom into a solid cornerback. Shepherd's agent, Antoine Podbevsek has stated, "Jacoby would very much like to resign with the Jets, however, if the Jets do not present an offer soon he will move on."

The Jets would like to keep Shepherd as security, in case they do not find the starter they are looking for, however, they have said that they would like to give last year's second round pick, Dana McAllister the opportunity to play in the nickel position. In another words, if the Jets sign Shepherd, he would be penciled in to be there starter, and the goal was to upgrade the position.

Things are picking up as 26 players inked new contracts:

The top signings were:
Chris Chambers, WR - Chambers leaves Miami for Minnesota for 3 years, and $10.11 million. Chambers finished last season with 56 receptions for 726 yards and 4 touchdowns. Chambers will team up with Randy Moss and veteran quarterback Vinny Testaverde. This gives the Vikings another option in the passing game, something they did not have last season. Moss finished with 91 receptions last season, that was without another wideout and Culpepper missing for most of the season.

Chad Bratzke, DE - Bratzke leaves Indianapolis for Houston, Bratzke had an off season last year with the Colts, finishing with just 2 sacks. Bratzke will be paid $14.29 million over the next 4 seasons.

Drew Bennett, WR - Bennett heads to the Giants for the next three seasons for nearly $3 million. Bennett had 84 receptions the previous two seasons as a starter with the Titans. Bennett said the decision was an easy one, when the Giants re-signed Kerry Collins.

Derrick Deese, LT - The Texans continue to spend, adding a valuable left tackle in Deese, for 3 years, and $8.92 million. Deese a solid veteran, leaves the 49ers to protect the young quarterback, David Carr.

Jevon Kearse, DE - Kearse resigned with the Texans for 4 years, and $12.52 million. Kearse who played last season with the Texans for the minimum was rewarded the large deal after finishing last season with 11.5 sacks.

Kelly Gregg, DT - Signs with the Colts for 4 years, and $9.52 million. Gregg spent last season with the Cardinals where he was a solid contributor against the run, and rushing the passer.

Shawn Barber, OLB - Barber signed a huge deal with Detroit for 5 years, and $16.53 million. Barber spent the past few seasons with the Chiefs, and last season finished with 70 tackles.

Ross Hochstein, G - Hochstein signed a big deal with the Cardinals for $8.16 million over the next 4 seasons. Hochstein was a run mauler last season for the Browns. The Cards hope the signing will continue to develop their running game with back, Michael Shipp.

Jonas Jennings, LT - signed with Seattle, 3 years, $5.04 million from St. Louis.

Hempstead, NY - The Jets announce their first signing of an unrestricted free agent today, Khalid Abdullah. Abdullah comes from Cincinnati where he was a 5th round pick in the 2003 draft. Abdullah was a starter his two seasons with the Bengals, and is still developing. The Jets envision him working in both at the weak and strong side, behind Vilma and Bailey. Abdullah can play the run "OK," as head coach McGregor said, but McGregor also added the Abdullah has the ability to be a "fierce pass rusher." Abdullah last season recorded 4 sacks, and has 6.5 sacks over his two seasons. Abdullah is 26 years old, 6'2" and 225 pounds. He graduated out of the small college, Mars Hill.

The Jets also announced that they have made an offer on cornerback, Jacoby Shepherd. Shepherd who has been courted by the Eagles, was officially offered a contract. The Jets who did not guarentee him a starting position, like Philadelphia, but did tell him he would have a chance to compete with Molden.

The Jets look to stand tight through stage 6, and are awaiting word on guard, Steve Sciullo.

Seth Payne, DT - Payne who was traded to the Giants for a #1 pick during last year's draft is now leaving New York for New England and a reported $22.48 million over 6 years. Payne who is entering his 9th season is a run stuffer who can play the pass as well. For the Giants, it is time to second guess their draft time decision last year to deal a #1 for a player who lasted one season.

Anthony Becht, TE - The Jets lose another prominent free agent in Anthony Becht. Becht who was the 2nd best TE in this year's free agent class signed with Cincinnati for 4 years and $7.52 million. Becht caught 40 passes last season for the Jets.

Kabeer Gbaja-Bailama, DE - KGB resigned with the Packers after recording 18.5 sacks over the last two seasons. KGB signed a 2 year deal worth $1.45 million.

Ruben Brown, G - The veteran Brown leaves the Bills after 10 seasons to sign with Cleveland and $7.09 million over the next 3 seasons. Brown joins Charles Woodson, Ken Dilger and Antonio Bryant as the key signess by the Brownies this off season, now they still need to find a quarterback. Can you say Aaron Rodgers with the first pick of the draft?

Ross Verba, LT - The Browns kept a key piece of their O-Line when they resigned Verba to a 2 year deal worth $2.89 million.

Jamal Williams, DT - Williams leaves San Diego for Houston for 3 years and $2.42 million. The Texans continue their spending spree during the free agency period. Williams is the 10th player Houston has signed during free agency.

Marc Bulger, QB - Signs with the Panthers for 3 years, $26.67 million from the Saints. Last season Bulger signed with the Saints late, and played for the minimum to prove his worth. In a surprise move the Saints did not franchise him, and resign him. Bulger turned down a similar offer from the Browns. Last season Bulger threw for 4,300 yards and 31 touchdowns for the Saints. Now Bulger will head to Carolina who has already signed the prolific Marvin Harrison. It looks as if the Panthers are building to knock off the Bucs this season.

David Terrell, S - Terrell leaves Washington to join the Vikings for 4 years and $4.98 million. Terrell will help the Vikes who are being aggressive in the Free Agency market. Terrell is a punishing hitter who can make the interception as well. He has 8 over the past two seasons.

Steve Heiden, TE - Heiden also signed with the Vikings, leaving the Browns, for a one year salary. Heiden caught 31 passes last season, but is more know for his aggressive blocking. In addition to Terrell and Heiden, the Vikes also signed cornerback David Barrett, 2 years, $1.4 million from Arizona, defensive end, William Andrew, 3 years $2.08 million from San Francisco, and linebacker Al Singleton, 2 years, $1.39 million from the Jets.

Chike Okeafor, DE, Okeafor signed with the Jags for 2 years, $1.62 million. Okeafor leaves Seattle where he was a consistent performer. Okeafor started 12 games last season and recorded 20 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Dexter McCleon, CB - McCleon signed a 3 year deal worth $2.98 million with the Giants after spending just one year in Jacksonville. During the 2004 season McCleon had 3 interceptions and 66 tackles. McCleon will line up along side perhaps the best cornerback in the game, William Peterson.

As we approach stage 8, I still wait to see if guard, Steve Sciullo will sign with me. My offer of 3 years, $2.63 million is still pending. I need to put an offer out there to sure up some areas.

Right now I have missed out on some of the cornerbacks I was seeking, however, that may end up helping, as the second highest rated corner in free agency is still available, Andre Dyson. Dyson is a tad higher than what I wanted to spend, however, he is a talented player who could be worth the expense. I will sit tight on him a few more stages before I get involved.

At tight end, I was really leaning towards Steve Heiden. He was a really good blocker, who was average in the passing game. I am now keeping an eye out on to what transpires with Chad Lewis. Lewis caught 58 passes last season, and is a decent blocker, however, I am concerned that he is going to be 34. Cameron Cleeland may be the better option. Cleeland is 30, good in the blocking and passing game, and although a few dollars more than Lewis, his production warrants that, catching 138 passes the past two seasons.

I am keeping a watch on the wide receivers as well, two that have caught my eye are Travis Taylor and Josh Reed. I would like to keep Chrebet at his natural position, flanker, and find a split end. I do have Calico and Terrell on the roster, and they could probably do and adaquet job, however, if I do decide to upgrade and invest in the position, either Reed or Taylor could be the way to go.

I am still conteplating about what to do at the running back position. I would have liked to find a full back to replace Sowell, but really none are available through free agency or the draft, I may look to resign Jordan in late free agency if he is available and move him to fullback. It would be an experience hit, however, he could find a nice fit. I still would like to sign Barlow, or draft a number two back to work behind Martin instead of using Morton there.

The left defensive end position needs to be addressed, I am convinced that I will go after Aaron Smith, however, the question, that keeps arising is why wasn't this guy, who is rated very good, playing much in the last two season. He started just 6 games the past two years with Pittsburgh and Dallas.

The right defensive tackle position will probably be filled with the resigning of Jason Ferguson. He has drawn zero interest from the market and his price is continuing to drop, I will wait him out. If a team makes a pitch for him, barring it is not ridiculous, I will match it and leave the decision to him. If not, I will find a lesser player at a lesser price, and hope the D-Line picks up the slack.

A position I did not discuss earlier was the Stong Side LB spot. Currently Boss Bailey is the starter, however, I am concerned that based on his solid performance last season his actual ratings have not increased. I feel as if his potential may not be reached, leaving me weak at the Strong Side spot. Keith Bullock is available, and is a solid linebacker, good against the run, pass coverage, and rushing the quarterback. However, if I decide to make a bid on Bullock, I would have to give up the chance of signing Dyson. So, that is something to mull over during the next few stages.

15 Players inked new deals, the top signings were:

Aaron Smith, DE - The Jets have signed the defensive end they coveted since the beginning, officially ending the chance that Shaun Ellis could be resigned. The Jets signed Smith to a 4 year deal worth $7.05 million. Smith spent the first five seasons of his career with Pittsburgh, in 2004 Smith played for the Cowboys starting 4 games and recording 18 tackles and 5 sacks.

Jason Ferguson, DT - The Seahawks nabbed Ferguson with their first offer, eliminating the Jets plans to perhaps resign Fergy. Ferguson signed a 3 year deal worth $3.62 million. Ferguson was perhaps the best defensive tackle available in this year's free agency class at playing the run. Ferguson recorded 33 solo tackles last season.

Matt Stevens, S - Seattle continued their efforts in solidifying their defense with the signing of Stevens to a 3 year, $2.43 million deal. Stevens spent last season with Carolina. Stevens is a hard hitter who supports the run well. Stevens will compete with last year's starter Ken Hamlin, and this year's signing of Jay Bellamy for time at Free Safety. Seattle has signed 9 players during free agency, 6 on the defensive side of the ball.

Antuan Edwards, S - The Raiders found a stong safety in Edwards for the next two seasons at $1.47 million. Edwards started just 5 games for the Packers last season but managed 45 solo tackles for a tackle percentage of 15.7.

Dwayne Carswell, TE - Cincinnati signed their second tight end of the free agency signing period for 2 years, $1.71 million. Carswell is expected to be relief for Anthony Becht, and in on two tight end sets. The seasoned vet caught 27 passes for the Broncos last seasons.

Ovie Mughelli, FB - The Patriots continue to sign offensive players, this time the fullback, Mughelli. He signed a 3 year deal worth $1.63 million. Mughelli started 26 games over the past two seasons for the Ravens. He is a versatile back who can run, catch and block. The Patriots hope Mughelli will improve a running game that struggled last season.

Lance Briggs, OLB - The 2003 defensive rookie of the year signed with the Seahawks for 3 years, and $1.43 million. Briggs was drafted by the Bears in the 3rd round of the 2003 draft and started 16 games as a rookie. However, last season Briggs started just 3 games after losing his spot to Nail Diggs.

Matt Wilhelm, OLB - Signed with Cleveland, 3 years, $1.43 million from San Diego.

15 players signed deal for Stage 9, top signings were:

Shane Burton, DT - Burton signed a big contract with Arizona, 4 years, $10.37 million. Burton started 16 games last season for Carolina and recorded 44 solo tackles and 4 sacks. The signing of Burton will certainly end the chance of the Cards signing last year's starter, Derrick Ransom. Ransom statistically had a better season than Burton, 59 tackles, and 6 sacks.

Na'il Diggs, OLB - Diggs gets the big contract from Detroit, $10.49 million over 4 years. Diggs had a solid season in his only year in Chicago, 84 tackles, and 5 sacks. It will be interesting to see what Detroit does with their linebacker situation, last year they signed Carlos Emmons who plays the strong side as well. They appear to have the make up of using a 3-4 defense this season.

Keyshawn Johnson, WR - It looks as though Indianapolis is trying to soften the blow of losing Marvin Harrison with this signing. Johnson signed for 3 years, $2.34 million. Johnson caught just 34 passes last season with Kansas City in 10 games. This will be Johnson's third team in 3 years.

Kenny Peterson, DT - The Jets took quick action to Ferguson being taken off the market, they sign Peterson to a 3 year deal worth $2.50 million. Peterson is entering his 3rd season and has been a durable player for the Packers, starting all 32 games. Peterson has posted 102 tackles and 2.5 sacks in his two seasons.

Heath Evans, FB - The Browns were able to keep Evans with a 3 year deal and $2.21 million. Evans is primarily a blocking fullback, and with the 1-2 punch of Green and Suggs, the Browns hope he continues to do so.

William Bartee, CB - 3 years, $2.02 million with New England, from Seattle.

Hempstead, NY - The Jets got busy during the last two stages, signing two defensive tackles, and defensive end and trading for a tight end.

The Jets got the defensive end they had coveted since free agency began, Aaron Smith. Smith signed a 4 years deal worth $7.05 million. Smith will replace Shaun Ellis, who still has not signed, at right end. Smith has a similar build to Ellis, 6'5" and 293 pounds. Smith is a smart player who can use technique as well as brute strenth to get to the quarterback, and pressence against the run can lack at times, but with a stong linebacking corp the Jets should still be okay.

The Jets were disappointed that Jason Ferguson signed a deal the first opportunity that was presented to him. The Jets gambled and lost out on a player they were sure they could resign. It did not take long to find a replacement however, the Jets signed Kenny Peterson who was a cap casulty in Green Bay, after just two seasons in the league Peterson has emerged as a nice player. Peterson will line up along side Ty Warren to form a young formidable inside pressence for the Jets defense.

Along with signing Peterson, the Jets also assured depth at the defensive tackle position. The team resigned Cornelius Griffin. He will primarily back up Ty Warren and will get some reps at either tackle position.

With tight ends moving quickly in free agency, and the draft class weak at that position, the Jets opted to make a trade for one. They dealt their third round pick in this year's draft to Indianapolis for Dallas Clark. Clark may not be the biggest tight end at 6'3", 257 pounds, but he adds a dimension that Becht could not bring to the passing game. He is a player who does have the ability to get downfield. Clark is potentially a physical blocker as well. Clark started just 4 games in Indianpolis where he was unable to pry the starting job away from veteran Marcus Pollard. The writing was on the wall that Clark would see less time this year when the team signed Desmond Clark. "This was a win-win situation for both organizations," Marra stated. We received a player that we expect to start for us, while Indianapolis received a pick that they can use on a player to better suit them. We had Dallas rated high in the 2003 draft, but at the time had Anthony Becht, with Becht moving on and Clark available we felt it was the perfect fit for us."

Our roster now sits at 42 players, we are still awaiting Sciullo's decision. He has drawn interest from other teams, but we feel confident he will sign with us. As far as the rest of the early free agency period goes, we are still looking to make a few more moves to sure up our roster. We are still watching the running backs and receivers, and are still sitting on cornerback, Andre Dyson, however, our cap room is getting smaller, so we need to wait out the Dyson situation. We will probably sign about 3 more players, giving us 45 when we enter the draft. Pick up 6 to 7 players during the draft, sign a few undrafted players and add some depth during late free agency will allow us to carry about 60 players to camp.

A problem that should be addressed is our strong conflict between O-Line leader Jason Fabini, and Kareem McKenzie. There are possibilities that we deal McKenzie and look to replace him through the draft or sign an available right tackle like, Todd Wade, or Adrian Klemm. I like both Fabini and McKenzie, however, they are not on the same page as another. McKenzie has not played that well the past two seasons, and perhaps this has attributed to it.

The other problem is Santana Moss, I would love to keep this guy, however, he is in the last year of his contract and wants a monster new deal. In my opinion he does not warrant $38 million over four seasons. I have conteplated trading him, however, knowing how the game works, Moss will be a free agent next season, and I feel like I am taking advantage of the Computer AI. So, in all likelyhood, Moss will play for the Jets this season, then become an unrestricted free agnet next year, where maybe his demands will lessen, and I can resign him there.

Top signing for Stage 10:

Jerry Wunsch, G - Signed a 2 year, $2.43 million contract with New England. Wunsch started 15 games last season for the Vikings, after seeing little action in 2004 with Seattle. Wunsch becomes the second offensive lineman the Patriots have signed, center John Wade the other. Wunsch is the Patriots 10th signing, who are attempting to overhaul their roster to improve upon last season's 8 win season. The Patriots last season dropped their last 3 games to fall out of the playoff possibilities.

Adam Archuleta, S - Archuleta signed with Carolina for 2 years and $1.4 million. Archuleta, a first round draft pick in 2001, lost his starting position in 2003, only to regain it back and then be released. Archuleta is a solid player who will provide depth at the safety position. Archuleta was seeking a starting position somewhere, but drew little interest and signed with the Panthers.

Steve Smith, WR - Smith resigned with Carolina for 2 years, $1.22 million. Smith, who became a starter in 2003, has recorded 102 catches during the past two seasons. Smith should benefit in the Panther new look offensively, with the additions of Marc Bulger, and Marvin Harrison.

John Wade, C - Wade signed with the Patriots for 3 years, $3.42 million. Wade was a starter during the Bucs Super Bowl wins but last season backed up in Houston.

Brenston Buckner, DT, 2 years, $1.46 million with Detroit from Denver. Buckner last season had a nice year with Denver finishing with 54 tackles and 5.5 sacks. The Lions are hoping the 34 year old will have enough left in the tank for at least this season. Buckner figures to start at LDT along side the emerging Shaun Rogers.

Daryl Gardner, DT, 2 years, $1.46 million with Arizona from Washington. Gardner was out at Washington because he does struggle against the run now a days, however, he is still a fierce pass rusher from the middle. The Cards front line did a good job at applying pressure, however, the team still lacks a middle pressence to play the run.

Jason Dunn, TE - signed 3 year deal, $2.57 million with St Louis from Chicago. I guess the Rams are going a different way not offering Cleeland a deal when he is seeking somewhere around 700k for one season. I guess they prefer Dunn's blocking ability and third down catching better.

Stage 14
Andre Dyson, CB - Dyson chose the Jets over the Eagles with a 4 year deal worth $11.13 million. This is the second time the Eagles have been beaten out by the Jets for a CB the coveted. Earlier it was Jacoby Shepherd. Dyson will be 26 shortly and enters his 5th season. He had just one interception last season but had a PDPct of 20.0. He is a punishing hitter who can play zone, man and bump and run, while being perhaps the best corner in the league against the run. At 5'10" and 187 pounds the Jets landed a player they thought they had no chance at. However, when Woodson, Hawkins, Coleman, McCutcheon and Westbrook went early the Jets then began to eye Dyson. Dyson's demands dropped and in the end it was the Jets and Eagles who posted similar deal to Dyson's agent for the decision.

Kris Brown, K - The Patriots replace Vinatieri, who signed earlier with Carolina with Kris Brown. Brown signed a 4 year deal worth $4.44 million. Brown is accurate from in short but struggles with leg strength.

Michael Lewis, WR - Signs a 2 year deal for $1.21 million with Denver from New Orleans.

Jets Ink Premier Corner

Hempstead, NY - The Jets announced today that cornerback, Andre Dyson is officially a Jets. Dyson was ranked as the second highest cornerback in the free agent market, however, a slew of cornerbacks when early and quickly and Dyson found himself unsigned heading towards the end of the initial free agency period. "I was begining to worry, thinking that I was going to have to wait to sign after the draft." If that were to happen Dyson would have certainly lost out on the money he had hoped for, perhaps even being forced to sign a one year deal at the minimum.

At the beginning of free agency, Charles Woodson set the tone of a chain of signings for cornerbacks when he signed with Cleveland. This was good for the Jets thinking that Daylon McCutcheon, who they originally targeted would not be rejoining the Browns. McCutcheon reacted quickly by jetting to Detroit and signing a deal with them. The Jets were then unsure of who to pursue next, they had Dyson ranked high, but were not able to sign him at what him and his agent were looking for, 14 million over 4 seasons. The Jets then were targeting Artrell Hawkins, who then signed with Patriots before the Jets had him in for a visit.

The plan at Jets' camp became a wait and see approch, they had Shepherd resigned and felt they could add depth in the draft, or the could see if Dyson's asking price would come down. When his price dipped below $12 million the Jets and the Eagles began their pursuit. The Jets and Eagles offered the same amount of money at the same stage, however, the Ealges were looking to make the last year of the contract voidable, while the Jets were not, that was the deciding factor that sent Dyson to the Jets.

The Jets now feel confident in their corner situation, with Dyson, Molden, Shepherd, McAllister and will either add a 5th corner with the deep draft or a late free agent acquisition.

It is clear that the Jets feel they will land one of the three top Stong Safeties with their #1 pick, and now can use the other picks to address some depth questions.

There is a good chance the Jets are done in the early free agent period. Needs are still to find a kicker, and their are indications the Jets will offer Doug Brien a contract to resign. Brien's agent has not budged on his initial asking price, so this might take some time to get done yet. The Jets are also weighing options at the running back position. The Jets realize that Curtis Martin is late in his career, and would love to have a chance at Cedric Benson, but it seems very unlikely that he will slide down to the late first round. Free agent, Keevan Barlow is still available, however, he is not a good receiver coming out of the backfield, something the Jets offense has become accustomed to with Martin.

Stage 15 was a busy one:

Thomas Jones, RB - signed a 3 year deal worth $2.52 million with San Francisco. Jones played for Dallas last season and started all 16 games, finishing the season with 1,005 yards and 6 touchdowns. Jones has good speed and power to run inside, what has lacked for Jones since being the 7th overall selection in 2000 was his inability to get to the hole and make tacklers miss. Jones was a member of the 2003 Super Bowl Champions, Tampa Bay.

Peter Warrick, WR - signed with Philadelphia for 2 years and $1.36 million from Cincinnati. Warrick is another member of the 2000 draft class who has not recached the potential that was expected when he was picked 4th overall. Warrick has developed good hands and the ability to get downfield, however, his inability to run precise routes and make the tough catches has hurt his development. Warrick caught 42 passes for 505 yards and 3 touchdowns last season. Warrick brings the dimension to return punts as well.

Dan Wilkinson, DT - signed a modest 2 year deal worth $1.93 million with Oakland from Detroit. Two seasons ago Wilkinson had a monster season with the Lions in which he earned First Team, All-Pro Honors. However, last season he struggled and faught off injuries. Oakland is hopeful he regains his 2003 form.

Rogers Beckett, SS - signed with Denver from Cincinnati for 2 years, $1.08 million. Beckett will replace the unsigned Kenroy Kennedy. Beckett had one interception last season.

Dre Bly, CB - Bly signed a big deal with Cleveland for 5 years, and $11.97 million. For Cleveland it was their second big signing of cornerbacks following the deal of Charles Woodson. Bly is a bit on the small side, but has good skills at covering both man and zone. He can be pushed around in bump and run coverage because of his size. Probably will not matter, as Woodson plays the same style. Bly had 3 interceptions last season.

Other Stage 15 signings:
Damien Robinson, S - signed 2 years, $1.75 million with Oakland from Cincinnati.
Wali Rainer, ILB - signed 2 years, $1.49 million deal with New England from Pittsburgh.
Mike Barrow, ILB - signed 2 years, $1.94 million with Cincinnati from the Giants.
Cory Bird, S - signed 2 years, $1.27 million with New England from Indianapolis.

Stage 16
Vaughn Parker, T - signed for 3 years, $5.99 million with Minnesota from San Diego. Parker spent all 11 years with the Chargers but some felt he was not at the level that his recent contract warranted. When released Parker went looking for a new home, that has the ability to win now. He hopes he found that in Minnesota. Parker will start opposite of McKinnie, last season's First Team All-Pro. Despite not having Culpepper for the season the Vikings still are setting up a roster that should be tought to beat.

DeJuan Groce, CB - signed a 3 years, $1.99 million deal with Pittsburgh from St. Louis. Groce will be part of a solid secondary that includes Chad Scott, Will Poole, Troy Polamalu and Donovan Darius. The Steelers secondary has the makeup to be one of the tops in the league, unfortunately the rest of the roster is not shaping up as well.

Lance Nimmo, T - signed 2 year deal worth $880,000 with Detroit from the Jets.
Eric Warfield, CB - signed a 3 year deal worth $2.04 million with St. Louis from Philadelphia, as the Eagles continue to lose members from their secondary and not sigining any others. The Eagles have just 2 cornerbacks on their roster.

Stage 17
Keevan Barlow, RB - Barlow signed a 3 year deal worth $2.36 million with St. Louis after 4 seasons with San Francisco. Barlow is a good running back who has speed, power, elusiveness and smarts. However, his ability to stay strong throughout the game can be a question. Barlow is not the greatest back out of the backfield, as evident by his 14 catches last season in 16 starts. Barlow ran for 860 yards last season, his first as the starter after Garrison Hearst retired. Barlow is a considerable upgrade at the RB position for the Rams who have struggled the past two season to find a consistent runner.

Michael Stone, CB - Stone signs a 2 years, $1.39 million deal with St. Louis as well. Stone spent the previous 4 seasons with the Cardinals. Last year he started 16 games, and had a PDPct of 18.2.

Chad Lewis, TE - Lewis signs with Detroit for 2 years, $1.28 million from Philadelphia. Lewis was intrigued by the team that Detoit has put together. The Lions are solid at all starting positions and look to improve beyond last season's 8-8 record and NFC North Title. Lewis is expected to compete with Mikhael Ricks for the starting position.

Mike Scifres, K - resigned with San Diego for 3 years and $1.36 million.


Stage 20
Christopher Brown, RB - Just when you think it is time to kick dirt on the Super Bowl Champions they make a move. The Steelers made a smart economical decision signing Brown to a 2 year, $1.16 million deal. Brown who will be only 24 this season, rushed for more than 2,500 yards in his two years with the Titans. Brown does not possess the tools of the elite backs, however, he is very big and can get the job done. With the interior line of the Steelers it will not be too difficult to run their. Pittsburgh desperately needs to find a QB however, right now the only one on their roster is the undrafted, second year man, JP Loseman. There are still some capable QB's out their, including Brunell, Couch, Batch, and Brees. Remember last season the Steelers won it with the unherald Brian Griese, who they released and is still unsigned.

Joe Andruzzi, G - signed a 3 year deal worth $5.95 million with Minnesota from Tampa Bay. Andruzzi was a 2nd team All-Pro guard with the Bucs last season. Minnesota has made a lot of good signings this off-season and look to dethrone the defending NFC North Champions, the Detroit Lions.

Derrick Rodgers, LB - signed a 3 year deal worth $2.18 million with San Francisco from Atlanta. The Niners hope Rodgers will bring a experience to this group and play well enough on the weak-side while last years 5th round pick, Greg Richmond continues to develop nicely.

1st Round

1. Cleveland – Aaron Rodgers, QB, California. The Browns go with the franchise signal caller in Rodgers. He has all the tools, arm, intelligence, and is developed at 53%.
2. Cincinnati – Derrick Rodgers, OLB, Texas – The Bengals needs are CB, G, S, however, Rodgers could be the best defensive player in the draft. Rodgers is 63% developed, and put up tremendous numbers at the combine, he ran a 4.54 40-time, under 7 in agility and benched 27 times.
3. San Francisco –Travis Johnson, DT, Florida State – The Niners get a DT who ran a 4.88 40-Time, and benched 44 times. He will have the benefit to learn the NFL game under veteran, Bryant Young who now enters his 12th season.
4. Atlanta – Alex Barron, LT – Florida State – The Falcons were hoping to nab Rodgers or Johnson here, but instead they get a franchise tackle in Barron. Barron is the highest rated player in the draft with a potential of 86.
5. Houston – Michael Munoz, LT, Tennesee – The Texans need a LT to protect their franchise signal caller, David Carr. Munoz has nearly the potential of Barron, just a little raw at this time.
6. Philadelphia – Michael Clayton, WR, Oklahoma – Despite the Eagles signing Warrick, Hall and Randle El, they still need a number one. Clayton ran a 4.3 40, and has tremendous abilities to do it all. He can be muscled around though, at 5’11 and 187 pounds.
7. Green Bay – Braylon Edwards, WR, Michigan – The Packers look to life after Favre by giving Rex Gossman a target in Edwards. Edwards has tremendous size and strength and ran a 4.40 in the 40.
8. Arizona – Shaun Cody, DT, Southern California – The Cardinals add youth to the DT spot behind Burton and Gardener. Cody moves tremendously well for a DT, and can play DE also.
9. Minnesota – Erasmus James, DE, Wisconsin – The Vikings look at James to play book ends with emerging star, Kevin Williams. James is built similar to John Abraham, 6’4”, 263 pounds who relies on finess over brute strength.
10. Chicago – Mike Williams, WR – Southern California – Williams will not have played in an official game in nearly 18 months when he sees the preseason but he will be ready. At 6’5” and can run the 40 in 4.4, the Bears have a legitimate receiver for Kyle Boller to work with. Boller who missed the 2003 and 2004 season because of injuries will rejoice.
11. Jacksonville – Adam Jones, CB – West Virginia – The Jags pluck the first CB off the board with this pick, when the top 3 WR’s are gone.
12. Baltimore – Thomas Davis, S – Georgia – The Ravens were desperately hoping for Mike Williams to be here, however, they upgrade the FS position with Davis. It seems the Ravens can never find that piece to their offense.
13. San Diego – Alex Smith, QB- Utah – The Chargers hope and wait for Smith to be here when they pick. Smith can sometimes get a little over confident which leads to interceptions, but he can certainly make all the throws.
14. Indianapolis – Jonathan Scott, OT, Texas – Scott a natural RT, will step right in and help protect franchise quarterback, Peyton Manning. Scott does need to get stronger, but his run and pass blocking techniques are good.
15. New Orleans – Lance Mitchell, MLB, Oklahoma – The Saints need help in all areas of their defense. They would probably like a DE here, but David Pollack or Dan Cody do not warrant this high of a selection.
16. Detroit – Cedric Benson, RB, Texas – Some scouts have Clarett rated a tick higher than Benson, however, Benson is the safer selection and did out perform Clarett at the combine. Benson ran a 4.45 40-time and benched 27 times.
17. New England – David Pollack, DE, Georgia – Pollack is a natural RDE, which works out well for the Patriots who have Seymour on the right. Pollack is a little small, 6’2”, 261 pounds, but has the instinct to apply pressure.
18. Oakland - Maurice Clarett, RB, Ohio State – The Raiders love controversial players and they find one here, despite being out of football for 2 seasons, Clarett was impressive at the combine. He ran a 4.5 40, and showed the strength and agility necessary to succeed at this level.
19. Kansas City – Ernest Shazor, S, Michigan – The Chiefs can do no wrong with this pick. They need help at every defensive position, so why not choose the best available defender.
20. Buffalo – C.J. Brooks, LT, Maryland – The Bills are in need of a lot on offense, so they start by finding a left tackle, who may take some time to develop, but has the tools necessary. Brooks is a technique tackle, who can be beat by a bull rush type player.
21. Denver – Antaj Hawthorne, DT, Wisconsin – The Broncos biggest need is filled here with Hawthorne. Hawthorne is a solid run stopper who should help last year’s 10th ranked run defense improve.
22. Washington – Orien Harris, NT, Miami, Florida – Harris is best suited for the NT, position, but could play the LDT or RDT as well. Harris is a little on the shorter side, 6’2” but wide at 300 pounds.
23. Miami – Chris Spencer, G, Mississippi – The Dolphins were hoping for a left tackle, like Brooks here, but find a good OL in Spencer to help make holes for Ricky Williams.
24. New York Jets – Josh Bullocks, SS – Nebraska – The Jets need help at the S position, and with Shazor gone, they pick the next SS in Bullocks.
25. Tennessee – Dan Cody, DE, Oklahoma – Cody shores up a solid DL in Tennessee with Carter, Haynesworth and Rein. The cap stricken Titans will be depending upon a solid draft to compete this season.
26. Seattle – Brandon Brower, CB, Oregon State – At 6’4” this rare size at the CB position makes perfect sense despite having Marcus Trufant and Ahmad Carroll. Brower possesses rareness, in both size and quickness, making him a fit in Seattle.
27. Carolina – Chris Spencer, G, Mississippi – Carolina gets the road grader of the future with this pick. Spencer is a tremendous run blocker. Spencer needs to work on his strength, but should be a starter on opening day for the Panthers.
28. New York Giants – Shawne Merriman, OLB – Maryland – Some boards have Merriman as the 4th rated OLB, however, Merriman had a good combine, can play the run well and rush the quarterback, he good be a bit of a liability in M2M coverage.
29. Dallas – D’Qwell Jackson, OLB, Maryland – The Cowboys find a player that does not have to start right away and can develop. D’Qwell is an excellent coverage backer who can hit, he does struggle playing against the run from time to time, and is small at 6’0”.
30. Saint Louis – Fabian Washington, CB – Nebraska – The Rams need help and they find that in Washington. Washington is a smart player who is exceptional in zone coverage.
31. Tampa Bay – Fred Gibson, WR, Georgia – The Buccanears need help on the offensive side of the ball. This is a team that will need to draft in all areas on offense and hope they can amount to something if this team wants to return to the Super Bowl for a 4th straight season.
32. Pittsburgh – Kyle Orton, QB, Purdue – The Steelers will sign a veteran quarterback to handle things for another season or two, and allow Orton to develop. He does not have the big arm like Rodgers or Smith, but is very accurate and has good delivery on his passes.

That is how it went. I had the #1 overall pick right, but after that there were some differences. I thought Rodgers was the best defensive player in the class, however, there opinion was James, they might have been right, James' ratings went up slightly. I had the #3, 4 and 5 right. For #6 I had Philly with Clayton, they took Cody. Same thing looks to be the right move on Philly's part. For #7 I had Green Bay going receiver, they went with a MLB, Mitchell. I had Mitchell going in the middle of the round. I think Green Bay reached a little here. For #8 I thought Arizona would go DT, and they did. For #9 I had Minnesota taking James, they got Johnson, good pick. Chicago went receiver with the 10 spot, just like I had thought. For #11 I had Jax taking Jones, he slid all the way down to the first pick of the 2nd round. I misjudged Jones according to this. The rest gets jumbled up, perhaps the surprise picks to me were, Clarett to Indianapolis, Detroit taking McCune, a middle linebacker who can not play the run. I did not think Chang was first round material, but his ratings did go up after the pick. He has good potential, but the actuals are far away. Benson went to Miami, who has Ricky Williams. Not sure why Oakland or Washington passed up on him when they are in need of a RB. And finally, Tennesse taking Leon Washington. They released Chris Brown, who did not cost much, and then turn around and draft one in the first round, who is very similar to Brown. Except now they have to pay him first round money. Huh?

Hempstead, NY - The New York Jets finished draft weekend and have six new players to sign quickly to get into camp.

1st Round - Ernest Shazor, SS, 6'4", 226 pounds, Michigan University.
The Jets had hoped that somehow Shazor would slide down to the 24 spot and he did. The team originally figured they would be drafting Josh Bullocks, who went to the Giants a few picks later. Shazor is built like a linebacker, but runs like a cornerback. He can play man, and zone defense, but does struggle in bump and run once in a while. He is excellent in providing run support and will start for the Jets on opening day.

2nd Round - LeQualan McDonald, Guard, 6'4", 344 pounds, Baylor University. One of the Jets goals was to add depth to the O-Line, the Jets were hopeful the D'Brickshaw Ferguson would still be around, but he had gone earlier to San Diego (13th pick of round 2). Instead the Jets get a mamoth guard who is fairly quick, has agility and decent strength. McDonald figures to fight Harker for the LG2 spot this season behind Travis Claridge.

3rd Round - traded to Indianapolis for TE Dallas Clark

4th Round - Jamaal Brown, LT, 6'6", 313 pounds, Oklahoma University. The Jets are hopeful that Brown can develop behind Fabini for the next season or two, and eventually replace Fabini, who enters his 9th season. Brown had a tremendous workout at the combine, including 35 repetitions in the bench press. He has tremendous size and strength, he just needs to devlop his technique.

5th Round - Alex Smith, TE, 6'5", 255 pounds, Stanford University. With this pick the Jets added depth to the TE spot, something they felt they lacked. Smith will compete with Baker for the TE2 spot, but it already looks as if Smith has the advantage simply on his run blocking abilities. Smith has the ability to be a physical blocker in the running game, and also stretch the field as a receiver.

6th Round - Justin Miller, CB, 5'11", 200 pounds, Clemson University. Miller will come in with really, no expectations from the Jets point. He will be looking to earn the time in nickel and dime coverage. Miller has excellent agility and does have the ability to make the interception, however, he does lack some pure speed, that he needs to start at this level.

7th Round - J.J. Arrington, RB 5'11", 210 pounds, California University. The Jets get a back who has some decent speed, can run in between and outside of the tackles, and can be a receiver out of the backfield. The Jets were looking at Carnell Williams with their 6th round selection, but opted to pass on him and take him in the 7th, Williams went a few pick later in the 6th round to the Seahawks, and the Jets looked Arrington's way. Arrington will have the opportunity to compete with Morton for the HB2 spot.

PLANS APPROVED TO GO AHEAD WITH STADIUM

Following the draft the New York Jets Organziation received the news they longed to here, they are going to have their own stadium built. The new stadium was approved by more than 51% of the voters. The preliminary plans figure to see the stadium completed for the 2010 season.

The stadium will seat 65,000 people, with 138 luxury boxes and 8,500 clubseats. The playing surface will be grass with a retractable dome for inclement weather. Currently the Jets can hold 79,700 people at home games, however, the capacity has been at just 70,000. Yes, the new stadium has less seating, however, the demand will be more, and therefore prices will increase. The addition of the club seats and of course the luxury boxes shall make this stadium a money maker for the Jets and the city.

ILB Liam Ezekiel, Northeastern - 6'1" 245 pounds, Ezekeil is a smart player who has a chance of making the team with Vilma primarily playing the weak side, if Ezekiel can impress during preseason, perhahps he can take the spot of the disappointing Victor Hobson who was drafted in the 3rd round, two years ago.
RB Anthony Davis, Wisconsin - 5'8", 194 pounds, Davis played high school football locally, and grew up watching the Jets. The Long Island native now will compete with 7th round draft choice, JJ Arrington for the 3rd running back position. Davis is a long shot, he has good running skills, but lacks the ability to play a part in the passing game or on special teams. He lacks the ideal size for an NFL back.
CB Abraham Eliminien, Hawaii - 5'10", 191 pounds, Eliminien dropped out of the draft after a poor senior year in which he lacks run support. Many figured he would go in the later rounds to become a nickel or dime back, however, at the combine he turned out a poor performance in the agility test. Now, he will try to crack a spot on the roster, perhaps as a return man or to replace a defensive back who goes down with an injury in the preseason.

We still need a kicker, and would feel more comfortable with some experienced depth at linebacker. We will not make offers to any other position at this time.

Tai Streets, WR signed a 2 year deal, $1.1 million with Houston from San Francisco. Streets was injured most of last year, playing in just one game. He caught 56 passes the season before.

Adam Meadows, T, signed a 2 year, $2.09 million with New England from Denver. Meadows will compete for time on a roster that has 6 offensive tackles. Meadows had a solid season with Denver last season, allowing just two sacks. Meadows was the leagues strongest man in 2004.

John Browning, DT, signed a 3 year, $2.08 million deal with San Diego from Jacksonville. Browning is expected to start this season at Left Defensive Tackle. Browning started 5 games for Jacksonville last season.

Mark Word, DE signed a 2 year, $1.35 million deal with St Louis from Jacksonville. The journeyman, Word will provide depth for the Rams.

Justin Griffith, FB, signed with Indianapolis for 2 years, $800,000. Griffith started 12 games last season for the Falcons.

Kenny Smith, DT, signed with Denver from New Orleans for 3 years, $1.7 million. Smith started every game over the past two seasons and is coming off a career high, 7 sack season.


Stage 5
Doug Brien, K, resigned with the Jets for 1 year, $900,000. Brien has struggled at times for the Jets the past two seasons, connecting on just 67% of his field goals.

Earl Holmes, ILB, signed with Pittsburgh for 3 years, $2.32 million. Holmes will probably get the start this season over their 1st round pick Channing Chowder. Holmes recorded 91 solo tackles for the Lions last season. Holmes was drafted by the Steelers in 1999.


Stage 6
Jamie Winborn, OLB, signed with St. Louis from Washington for 3 years, $1.53 million. Winborn will get a shot to start at the weak-side spot.

Jimmy Williams, CB, signed with Philadelphia for 3 years, $1.65 million. Williams will probably get the start opposite Bobby Taylor this season. Philadelphia came up short on many occasions, signing a cornerback this off-season.


Stage 7
Josh Reed, WR, signed with Cleveland from Buffalo for 3 years, $1.57 million. Cleveland hopes they found their starting split end. Reed started just one game over the past two seasons, however, he still managed to catch 61 passes.

Josh Bidwell, P, signed with San Francisco from Arizona for 3 years, $1.87 million. San Francisco brings in the veteran to compete with 5th round draft selection, Tom Malone.

Bennie Anderson, G, signed with Green Bay from Baltimore for 2 years, $1.48 million. Anderson is a powerful blocker who can struggle in pass blocking.

Hempstead, NY - A day after the Jets lost there preseason opener to Detroit, 13-6, Coach McGregor met with the media to discuss how the new season is progressing.

"We came out of yesterday's game unscathed, Santana Moss did tweak his hamstring, and we will sit him down until he is fully recovered. If this were the regular season, he could play.

As far as the game goes, we need to find a way to put points on the board. We did OK moving the ball (312 yards in total offense), and when you do that you expect more than two field goals. We played a young offensive line out there, and there inexperienced showed, with a couple of costly penalties and sacks. I thought Chad threw the ball well, and perhaps his best pass of the day was the long touchdown pass to Chrebet that got called back. The receivers did a decent job getting open and pulling down the ball. You saw Calico make a tough catch over the middle there, that is why we need him to be able to start this season. His size is a big plus for our passing game over the middle.

The running game did OK, like I said earlier, we had a inexpereinced line out there, so there were some mistakes. I thought Curtis did a nice job, as well as JJ Arrington. On the O-Line, we got rookies Jamaal Brown and Lequalan McDonald some quality time, and I think they saw the difference from the collegiate level to the pros. They both made some good plays and, well, some not so good plays.

On defense, we played some of the younger guys, including Dana McAllister and Justin Miller at corner. They did a decent job, McAllister had a tough time adjusting last season, but he seems better prepared and should see more time. We also need to get our first round pick (who just signed) in there when he is in game condition. He is behind now, and will probably stuggle at times this season.

We go to St. Louis next week and some of the people we are looking to see are Rattay at quarterback and Morton getting some more carries at back. We will also get a look at Cotchery who missed 15 games last year with an injury. We should also get our first look at Shazor in game action. We have been happy thus far with last year's third round pick, Pruitt and newly signed Damien Richardson at the strong safety position. At this time I will take any questions:"

"Coach, you did not bring in a replacement for Jordan, will Morton be handling the backup role, or are you looking elsewhere?'
"We expect Morton to play the HB2 spot this season. When the organization made the committment to resign Morton, they told him he would get a chance, he has worked hard and now he gets his chance."

"Is Chrebet's days as a starter with the Jets coming to a close?"
"Not sure at this time, we would like Wayne to be able to work out of his slot position. He has been playing out of postion for the past two seasons, and did a good job, but we need some size there and Calico and Terrell give us that."

"You have a new defensive coordinator this season, how have things changed?"
"Ernest (Shields) has come in running. He likes to use more players than we have in the past, rotating the front seven, and moving people around. The players will adjust and I am sure they will be fine. He likes to play more zone than we did last season, and use pressure through the line, and keep the backers in coverage."

"Any rookie free agents that have caught your attention?"
The corner, Elimimien has looked good, he went undrafted probably because of his combine numbers, but he has looked pretty good in camp. We have six corners here, not sure we want to carry that."

"Any position group you feel needs to be addressed before the regular season?"
"Right now, no, but there have been no injuries and it is still early."

The Jets went to St. Louis, and once again, Coach McGregor and Staff got to see what this team would look like if injuries were to hit this team hard. The Jets rested a lot of their starters and the reserves struggled to do much of anything against the St. Louis Rams.

Tim Rattay played the first quarter and completed 5 of 8 passes for just 28 yards. Rattay did not complete a pass for more than 10 yards. Navarre came in to relieve Rattay and did not fair much better. Navarre completed 13 of 30 passes for 126 yards and one interception. The Jets may need to see what backup quarterbacks become available following the preseason. Neither looks ready to step in.

Chad Morton was given the opportunity for some touches and played well, he carried for 54 yards on 13 carries. Other players taking advantage of the extended playing time included, defensive end, Bryan Thomas, who had 6 tackles and a sack. Coach McGregor also pointed out the play of reserve guard, Paul Harker, and cornerback Jacoby Shepherd.

In the end the Jets could just not muster up enough, and were defeated 24-6. Next week the team will travel to Minnesota, who is has turned over its roster with 33 new faces, including former Jets' quarterback, Vinny Testaverde who is expected to start in place of Duante Culpepper who will miss the season with recurring concussion problems. The Jets figure to come out with their starters to get a good look at where the team is at before it opens its season in two week at home with Miami.

Hempstead, NY - The Jets arrived back home from there game last night in Minnesota, and the mood was not that of upbeat. The team dropped its third preseason game, by a score of 23-14. The Jets came out quickly in the first quarter and were up 14-0, on Chad Pennington passes to Wayne Chrebet and Curtis Martin. Then, the reins were turned over to the reserves who struggled. Rattay completed 9 of 16 for 112 yards and one interception. Reserve running backs, JJ Arrington and Davis combined for 13 carries for 36 yards, as the offense puttered the rest of the way.

Former Jet, Vinny Testaverde played a quarter and a half, and looked steady. He then stepped aside for 2nd year quarterback, Nathan Chandler who torched the Jets for 206 yards, on 16 of 25 passing. New Viking, Chris Chambers got the best of the Jets newly designed secondary as he caught 8 passes for 133 yards.

Positives for the Jets was the continued preseason success of Tyrone Calico. Calico has caught 12 passes for nearly 200 yards in three games. Defensive Tackle Ty Warren showed some pass rushing skills as he had a 2 sack game. Wayne Chrebet continues to show no signs of aging, 7 catches for 90 yards. Alex Molden looks to have found his comfort with the Jets, as he continues to have a solid preseason.

The Jets signed offensive tackle, Scott Sanderson to be the primary backup behind Fabini and McKenzie, apparently the Jets do not feel Jamaal Brown is ready to play this season. The Jets have continued to monitor the transaction logs with interest at quarterback and defensive tackle.

Next week the Jets will close out there preseason with a home game against Arizona.

The Jets concluded their preseason with a lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 17-6 before 70,800 people. The defense was torched for 401 yards to the young Cardinals, who have looked stong this preseaons, going 3-1. The Jets concluded their preseason at 0-4.

The offense moved the ball well at times, but just could not position themselves to score some points, as evident by their 32 points during the preseason.

Curtis Martin looked stong this preseason, rushing the ball for 180 yards on 38 carries, an average of nearly 4.8 yards per carry. Martin's rushing average over the past two seasons is a dismal, 3.42. The Jets other offensive standout was the veteran Wayne Chrebet, who caught 24 passes during the preseason for nearly 350 yards.

Defensively the team seemed to regress instead of progressing, rookie safety, Ernest Shazor struggled during the preseason as well as new additions, Aaron Smith and Kenny Peterson. Smith and Peterson have big shoes to fill, and the Jets expect them to get the job done.

The injury report brought concern to the Jets camp as they were informed the Chad Morton, HB2, and Kick Return Specialists suffered a broken foot and will be out for approximately 8 weeks. The team will have to make the decision to place him on injured reserve or not. The Jets will now also decide if 7th round pick, JJ Arrington is ready to carry the load of a HB2, or if the team has to make a move for a reliable backup. If they go with the later thought, Morton will surely be placed on IR.

Other releases, James Dearth (TE), Liam Ezekiel (ILB), Damien Richardson (SS), and Jerricho Cotchery (FL).

Following the game the Jets announced the four players the would be released to get the roster down to the maximum of 53 players.

Opening Day in the NFL is this weekend and things look promising in New York for the Jets. Coming off a 10-6 season last year, and the AFC East Crown, the Jets used the off-season to fill some holes of last year to improve. Among the additions this season are: tight end, Dallas Clark, guard Steve Sciullo, tackle Scott Anderson, defensive end Aaron Smith, defensive tackle Kenny Peterson, linebacker Clark Haggans, linebacker Khalid Abdullah, cornerback Andre Dyson, and rookies, safety Ernest Shazor, cornerbacks Justin Miller, Abraham Elimimen, tackle Jammal Brown, guard LeQualan McDonald, tight end Alex Smith, and running backs JJ Arrington, and Anthony Davis.

Gone from last season are: running back Lamont Jordan, tight ends, Anthony Becht, and James Dearth, wide receivers Jerricho Cotchery and Marcus Robinson, guard Dave Yovanovits, tackles LJ Shelton and Lance Nimmo, defensive ends Shaun Ellis and Josh Evans, defensive tackle Jason Ferguson, linebackers, Hannibal Navies, Jason Glenn, and Al Singleton, cornerbacks Aaron Beasley, and Jason Webster, safety Tyrone Carter.

The team looks solid in most areas, offensively, a possible concern could still be the consistency of the running game. Sciullo is an upgrade, however, he still is not the perfect fit for a team that is looking to run the ball. Sciullo is more of a pass blocker. The Jets will be counting on Claridge to step up his performance from last season and hope that Martin can still get the job done. Many around the league feel the Jets should have looked for a running back in the draft or through free agency. The passing game looks ready to take off. Pennington is developing in leaps and bounds and the team has an offensive line ready to pass protect. The passing game will be what this offense relies on this season.

Defensively the team has a new look, once again. Two out of the four starters on the D-Line are new, gone are Ellis and Ferguson and in are Smith and Peterson. Ellis underachieved and therefore was easy to see move on, however, Ferguson came off a good season, and snubbed the Jets by not letting them have a chance to counter his offer in Seattle. The Jets quickly signed Peterson, a young developing DT, who lacks the run stuffing ability of Ferguson, but can rush the passer.

The secondary was overhauled as well. Gone are Beasley and Carter, and new are Dyson and Shazor. This may not be the answer early, but should come around and be one of the Jets strenghts this season.

The team is in decent position with the cap, and barring any run of injuries should find itself competing for the division crown once again. Figure an 11-5 season for the Jets, with New England at 10-6, Buffalo 8-8 and Miami at 5-11.

Hempstead, NY - The New York Jets played their best defensive game, statistically, under third year coach Ed McGregor yesterday, as the Jets defeated the Atlanta Falcons, 17-3.

Atlanta, expecting to improve dramatically from last year's 5-10-1 performance, a year in which Michael Vick was suspended for the season for off field conduct, began the year 1-0, with a victory over the Saints that saw them score 30 points. The Jets are looking towards taking that next step, however, the season did not get off to that type of start, as Miami, without Jay Fiedler, came with in inches of defeating the Jets as Dolphins place kicker, Olindo Mare sailed a 38 yarder wide left with nine seconds left to give the Jets the 27-26 victory.

New Defensive Coordinator, Ernest Shields, who came over from Tampa Bay was visibly frustrated on the sidelines during the Miami game at how the team was responding to his calls, however, the team seemed to be responding to Shields this week as the Jets held the Falcons to just 184 yards in total offense. After just two weeks the defesne is ranked 5th against the run, and 1st against the pass. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though, this was against two teams that were playing with a backup quarterback and a rusty quarterback.

Offensively the Jets still are struggling to run the ball. One of the goals of the offseason was to improve the defense and the running game, McGregor was not expecting to lead the league in rushing, however, he does expect the team to control the tempo of the games through the run, and be able to make key short yardage runs to sustain drive, both have not been evident in the first two games as the Jets have thrown the ball more than anyone else, 91 times.

The Jets will get a true test of their defense this week as the surprising 2-0 Titans come to New York. The Titans who were in terrible cap shape have once again appeared to find their way out and put a good product on the field. Steve McNair is hot, a quarterback rating of 120.1, and first round pick, running back Leon Washington, which everyone scoffed at when the Titans made the pick, has 210 yards rushing. Receivers Mason and Lloyd have combined for 29 receptions as the Titans 3rd ranked passing game, and 14th ranked rushing game look forward to their meeting. McNair stated, "Last season in the playoffs we thought we would be playing the Jets, however, they did not get by Pittsburgh. We look forward to the challenge this season."

It appears that the Jets dynasty has come to an end. After more than a year of working on a detailed dynasty, editing files and recreating the NFL Universe, a hard drive crash may have wiped it our. Stay tuned...perhaps it can be saved.
