I don't have a strong need to fill most of the blanks (ie...Is 39 a C or a C-? Not a biggie to me.), but I'm curious if anyone has this information, because it has an effect on my next issue:

2. I think I have been operating on a false assumption, and I'd like to see what y'all think, or if HR wants to answer, that's fine too. ;)

I've been viewing the Current rating and Potential as two separate entities. What I mean by that is that a player rated 90 current with "A" potential in my mind has meant: "He right now is rated 90, and he has the potential to get a whole lot better." However, I just noticed that in my last training camp, my PF, rated 90/A in inside scoring, only went from 90 to 93, despite me giving him 8 points in INS in training camp. However, he was rated 65/B in 3PS, and went from 65 to 71, despite only 4 points being given to shooting. It hit me that maybe this is FOF-style. Here is my question: Does 90/A mean, "Right now he is rated 90, and he has the potential to be an A-, A or A+ player." If that is the case, 90/A could then translate rougly to 90/91, in FOF-speak, as opposed to the 90/100 that I have been viewing it as. Perhaps that 65/B translates to 65/71, and now that he's a 71/B, which would mean that he has essentially redlined, as opposed to being rated 71/85, which is how I would have interpreted 71/B.

Does this make sense, and am I on the right track here?

Here is my question: [i]Does 90/A mean, "Right now he is rated 90, and he has the potential to be an A-, A or A+ player." If that is the case, 90/A could then translate rougly to 90/91, in FOF-speak, as opposed to the 90/100 that I have been viewing it as. Perhaps that 65/B translates to 65/71, and now that he's a 71/B, which would mean that he has essentially redlined, as opposed to being rated 71/85, which is how I would have interpreted 71/B.

Does this make sense, and am I on the right track here?

I think your initial thoughts were accurate. It's just kind of a percentage thing - he gained 33% inside of what's left to go - the other guy gained only ~15%.

FWIW, I didn't do a breakdown study, but on issue #2 I came to the conclusion that it is what you first thought. I came to the other side from where you now think you should be.

Mark of a cool game.

BTW, I'm evaluating my new team and thanks to somebody suggesting a 1-20 system, I'm going that route but let me lay down what made me think how I do.

PF Vance
FT 8/D 8 = 40 and D is in the < 30 range.

SF Darby - same splits in FT and BLK

lots like this.

Also this one example.
PG Fennell

HND 10/D

I guess that I see enough to say there could be a correlation but enough exceptions to think that it may be as first described. I only looked at my own guys.

I'd like to believe it's not as simple as potential = best possible ( granted with exceptions ). The game seems much cooler and fuzzy with potentials being based on relativity to currents as opposed to set maximums.

Got it...I had a bunch of hidden cells (the actual data, before the min and max columns). That was throwing it off I reckon.

Anyway, thanks for the responses guys, but I confess I don't full understand the 15% RPI referred to. Elucidate, please.

Of course, now that I know that a chart exists, no matter how much I may rage against it, I simply must glance at it now and again and not that I'd judge a player by it, I can't help thinking, ...

Damn you Skydog, damn you straight to [a really bad and icky place which wouldn't be politically correct to name].

Oh, and in opera the formatting is dead on. Both times. Unless you have more than 3 columns. I get GRD/MIN/MAX

One other bit of info.

The manual says

The following options all contribute to the amount of growth the player experiences during training camps: player potential, head coach offensive and defensive coaching skill, coaching assistant offensive and defensive coaching skill, the quality of the team’s training facilities, and the quality of opponents the team played the previous season.

It seems to suggest here that the potential is a modifier to stats growth as opposed to a hard cap. It doesn't SAY this but it does suggest it. If it's not, then it's a pretty misleading way of putting it.

Speaking of the manual: and the quality of opponents the team played the previous season.When I noticed this phrase a week or so ago, I started scheduling 2-4 games at the top Prestige schools in the country. It seems that since then, my players' development has accelerated. Very cool.

I was afraid that this would be the case. :)

I recently saw this too. I somehow have always thought it was a bad thing to schedule guaranteed losses.

Is it really that much worse to lose to Arizona by 40 or to Kent State by 15? Dang, now I have something else to consider. :)

Actually, I think this is an incredibly cool part of the game.

I don't know. I just tried something with two similar-looking PG's. I gave them identical training camp numbers (9 handling, 8 perimeter defense).

First guy:

HND: 46/C---->47
PAS: 51/C---->53
PRD: 52/C---->58

Second guy:

HND: 57/B---->65
PAS: 52/B---->60
PRD: 42/C---->47

The first guy played 24.5 MPG last year, and the second guy played 14.4MPG last year. What really interests me is the first guy's handling only went from 46 to 47, but his perimeter defense went from 52 to 58--despite getting less time. It would appear that he's heading toward "C" in handling, but that he's headed toward "C+" in Perimeter Defense.

I'm mostly finding results that suggest that the potential is the cap. At least, I'm not finding as great a variety that I thought existed. There are exceptions though which could either prove the rule or shoot it down.

I have gone to an old save game in it's second year. I see things like this.

PG Eliason HND 47/F
PG Melgar HND 48/F

OK, it's only 2 ratings but with the one above I can say there's no guarantees about the correlation. This is after looking at only 30 guys.

Hopefully this is something that HR can clarify for us. I still think that the potential tends to be more of "quality of stat gain" than "cap for stat gain" if that makes sense. It seems to me that players I've had that start with high ratings, for example 17/A (I play 1-20) increase to 20 much faster than players with 17/C. This seems to indicate that even with high numerical scores, your potential score helps you improve faster. If it was a cap system, wouldn't players pretty much improve at the same rate?

Skydog, your handling/perimeter defense example seems to confirm this. Guy B received much higher boosts to his stats even with less playing time, with higher potential rankings. Maybe I'm confused though, are you trying to say that potential acts as both the rate of skill gain and a cap?

Ben E Lou
03-18-2004, 11:19 AM
Sure, he received higher boosts, which is to be expected either way: cap or quality. What ISN'T to be expected is that the first guy received only one point extra in ball handling, but 6 in perimeter defense, despite getting more training time in ball handling. I'm hypothesizing that his true potential (capped) for ball handling is somewhere in the middle of the "C" range, while his true potential (capped) for perimeter defense is a "C+"--which would still be listed as a "C" under the potential ratings convention.

I'm assuming you meant 90 to 97 for that A rating?

I'm assuming you meant 90 to 97 for that A rating?No. Here's what I can see from my current roster:Those are merely the ranges as reflected on my team's roster. I had no ratings in the 91 to 97 inclusive range, so I can't say for sure where the cutoff point is.

The basic breakdown looks like this:

GRADE MIN MAX
A+ 96 100
A 86 95
A- 76 85
B+ 71 75
B 66 70
B- 61 65
C+ 53 60
C 39 52
C- 31 38
D+ 26 30
D 21 25
D- 16 20
F+ 11 15
F 6 10
F- 0 5

As far as the potentials, A potential does mean it could be anywhere from A- to A+. With development, the potential is a sort of soft cap. Players can improve beyond their potential value but development will be much slower at that point.

So those guys with the 47/F are guys who developed way past their potentials? That's a really soft cap there. It's a cool concept but I kinda liked it better when I thought of it as growth rate. :)

In most cases you can think of it as a growth rate and it would still work. The only time it wouldn't is when they go over their intended potential.

Yeah....just had a guy rated 84/B in INS who got 8 points in training camp and didn't grow at all in that area, but got 8 points in PSD, and grew from 44/C to 50/C. I think I understand now.

I assume then that a 47/F or a 73/C guy won't go DOWN then?

I've never seen a player go down after they have joined my team.

From all I've heard, ratings will never decrease. In fact I think it was somebody (maybe HR) who said you could set training settings to "zero" and your guy wouldn't get worse, he just wouldn't improve in the zero'ed areas.
